Oh my god, this film makes me cry like a baby. There are many films that focus on a community embracing a fish out of water, but far less that are about what happens when the novelty of being the fish wears off. It just breaks my heart.

Another Fun Fact: Nick Carter from "The Backstreet Boys" is in this film. (before music, his parents wanted him to do acting), he had an uncredited role in this film and he was one of the kids Peg and Edward saw while driving home (specifically the one on the slip&slide). *(I just checked again) He's credited as "Neighborhood Extra #1".

I think Edward is mostly interested in mechanics like the smoke detector and the switches in joyce's salon because he is a robot and he did probably experience the Cookie Factory working in the castle.

The scenes with Vincent Price always break my heart when I watch the movie. He's my favorite actor in the world and it makes me sad since it was his last theatrical on-screen appearance. Plus Vincent was such a kind soul in real life and it really shows in the scenes where he's interacting with Edward, the death scene of the inventor always hurts my heart. :'(
@Optimegatrongodzilla7 жыл бұрын
Plus, there's the fact that Edward said "He didn't wake up.", which makes it seem like he doesn't know that the Inventor's dead. Heck, the Inventor might not have even told Edward about the concept of death before he died.

This is my favourite movie. I love your commentary on it. I laughed a lot. By the way, the reason why everyone keeps telling Edward that they know a doctor who can help him is because there was a deleted scene where Edward is in the hospital (after the tv accident) and finds out that there is no such doctor who can help him after all.

You know, one thing that never cleared out to me about Vincent Pryce character, the inventor, was why did he decided to come to that suburban town. To be so secluded with his factory and inventions like that. My top theory was that he was inventing gadgets across the country, mostly robotics since how amazing his inventions are and then sell them to the highest bidder. I mean, just look at them! They all look so worth every penny.

Tim Burton's best movie, hands down. And everyone involved also did their best work. Elfman, Depp, Ryder, everyone. This is the Burton flick that made me cry as a kid, not 'Batman Returns'. It's one I love going back to nowadays because I see something new every time now. I never picked up on the commentary of the dullness of living in the suburbs when I was a kid, you know? There's some good social commentary/observations in it.

Can I just say how happy I was to see this pop up on my notifications? I LOVE this movie, easily one of my absolute faves from Tim Burton. It came out the year I was born (but not on my actual birthday, lulz), and the rather ethereal quality that sort of paints the overall picture the movie presents stuck with me along with that fact. Seeing you cover it really made my night!

There is something very telling when you see the inventor's cookie factory. It's something that looks dark and probably dangerous, but yet it's used to make (hopefully) delicious treats. Created with good intentions, but with a grim design. Maybe, I'm looking to much into it, but I find it interesting.

I thought the whole point of the doctor gag was that, in America, as you have to purchase Doctors, everyone sort of subtly brags about how good their Doctor is and about how they can pretty much do anything...as sort of like a status thing. But, of course, like most boasts, it's just a boast to make people feel good about themselves in the moment and then move on. It also high lights how people want to only engage with Edward on a shallow level, so long as there's some 'novelty' to him and see saying stuff like that as some sort of an in road and a 'virtue signal'. Kind of like complimenting someone on their clothing or something, or asking about their accent, except in this case its also fakeness masquerading as concern. Anyway, loving these reviews :) I like seeing a classic Burton movie reviewed in such an entertaining way. Also, just as an aside, I never realised that was Anthony Michael Hall until I had it pointed out to me! I knew him first from breakfast club and weird science and he just struck me as embodying that dorky persona so well I just couldn't equate him with being a wanker jock! Also, he just looks so different here! Picturing him from breakfast club days I never imagined he could even look as convincing as that! Anyway, lack of imagination on my part I guess and its a shame he didn't seem to get more high profile roles until recently.

I did think that this movie had a really interesting setup. Typically movies show how the young kids and teens are the only ones to understand the gentle nature of someone whom society labels as a monster, so this quite a reversal. Yeah, yeah, things do change later on, but... I appreciate how this is spun around and the general public accepts Edward. Ok, ok, there's the crazy church lady, who also dislikes him, but given how often I hear (fanatical) Christians sing songs of love and tolerance, and then immidiately following it up with xenophobia and paranoia.... I do certainly approve that!

Most of the people who dislike the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film seems to be (mostly American) fans of the Willy Wonka film, rather than fans of Roald Dahl and his book. Personally I (and this seems to be the majority opinion in Europe at-least) found it to be an almost perfect adaption, at-least from the perspective of knowing what Dahl tried to do with the book, rather than what people think he did based on seeing the Gene Wilder film first and basing their impression of the book on that. Sure Wonka's character was a bit off, but it was still closer to Dahl's off-beat, macabre sense of humor than what the Wilder film did with him. Big Fish is one of those Burton films that doesn't feel like a Burton film despite having his fingerprints all over it, so keep that in mind going in. Alice's main flaw it that it is pretty much just a generic late-2000's/early-2010's fantasy film with a Tim Burton and Alice in Wonderland coat-of paint on top. I still found it enjoyable enough (particularly with the few nice references that probably only Lewis Carroll fans picked up on; like "Underland"), but you aren't missing out on all that much by not having seen it. You'd probably enjoy the hell out of Sweeney Todd, though.

I feel similar to you on Mars Attacks! it's a movie that you only really can appreciate when you find out that every single scene is based on the Mars Attacks card game that Tim Burton enjoyed collecting as a kid. I only got into the movie after watching it again after looking up what all the cards look like. Without seeing the cards, I thought the movie was a horrible mess. Re-watching this video now so I can properly watch the second part! ^^ I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for this movie, in the long ago time before Johnny Depp was in every single Tim Burton movie, and his loveable, gothic good was overdone. Edward is just such a cinnamon roll, I wanna give him a hug! I always liked Dianne Wiest in this movie. Peg is the person you wish was your mom (at least I always did). Honestly I thought Peg and Edward had more chemistry than Ed and Kim-- and I don't mean that in a sexual way. Edward and Kim's interactions always felt stilted and unnatural to me. I loved Winona Ryder in Beatlejuice, but for some reason her acting felt so wooden in this movie, whereas Peg and Edward's interactions felt more normal. If this movie had lost the romance angle, and maybe had focused on Peg's fondness for Edward, perhaps show Peg slipping into the role of a mother figure to Ed, and show her becoming more protective of him... I think that would've been more interesting. On an unrelated note, I would pass on Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd. It's just not as good as watching a filmed stage production. Depp is just out of his league as Sweeney Todd, especially when you compare him to George Hearn (he played Todd in the 1982 stage production filmed for HBO, I believe, alongside Angela Landsbury as Mrs. Lovett, and later reprised the role of Todd in the filmed 2001 concert with Patti LuPone as his Mrs. Lovett) who outclasses Depp in terms of vocal range, and facial expressions that really brings the menace to Todd.

What if that 'doctor friend' was actually Edward's father/creator? He *was* able to help him with his hands and there's a good reason why those people can never follow through. It's also interesting to think that Edward's dad might have been a friend to so many people, and if the people knew his connection, they might not be as scared of him. It's going to be a little hard to keep track of those 'that's important later' moments across videos. :P I hope I remember.
@Cyborcat8 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense, since he lives in the dark mansion at the end of the street and none of them go there, hence why they didn't know about Edward. Also, he hadn't given anything hands yet so there's no reason why anyone would think that he could give Edward hands. Also, he's an inventor who makes machines--I doubt anyone would have thought of him as a doctor, even if they did know him--I'm pretty sure he was reclusive, and that's partly why Edward adopted that behavior.

Sweeney Todd is... meh. Johnny Depp is pretty good, but Helen Carter just... couldn’t sing past a mezzo piano and made Mrs. Lovette weak and boring. Which is a shame because Mrs. Lovette has ALL of the dark comedic songs: Worst Pies in London, A Little Priest, and By the Sea. Also, Joanna gets the shaft in character development. I would highly suggest watching the concert version with Patti Lapone.
