Did anyone have trouble trying to go into the filter gallery?
@coryphoto4 жыл бұрын
hey brandon, it’s probably means you’re working on a 16-bit image, here is the work around: duplicate the 16bit layer, make it a smart object, open the smart object, convert the bitmap to 8bit, apply the filter, save and return to the 16bit file.
@flower51852 жыл бұрын
In case others are having this issue - the image also needs to be in RGB color mode - not CMYK. To convert, go to Image > Mode > RGB Color

@@coryphoto save it as an 8 bit and then change it to a 16 bit ?
@coryphoto Жыл бұрын
@@JohnMihelakis create the layers with 50% fill, then convert the layers to a smart object, make the smart object an 8 bit layer, then add the grain, and that is the work around.

@@coryphoto Probably me but seems your stepping over the fact we're in a 16 bit file to begin with so I can't CREATE the action because there is no Filter Gallery option in a 16 bit file - as you know! So, is the recipe to create a dummy 8 bit document just to create the grain Action and then proceed on the 16-bit doc per your recipe above? And by "open the smart object" you mean as a separate PS doc, I assume? Hope you're still responding to posts....

This is some ways is beyond film. Film loses sharpness when it gains grains. With this technique the sharpness is still powerful. Thank you for this!

Your work inspired me so much when I started photography! Specifically your use of grain. I tried so hard to emulate the look that you create when I first started, way before this video was available. I came up with my own way of doing it, and I recently made a video about it on my channel. But how lucky we are to be able to learn from you here! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge & experience. It is so valuable!! Cheers, Cory! #coryphoto

One of the things that really attracted me to your work was this, the grain, but the grain not overly distracting me from the image or taking away quality or sharpness, So this is a great video! @/coryphoto

Amazing tutorial, thanks for sharing! Quick suggestion - it might be best to convert the two grain layers to a smart object before adding the Grain filter that way you change the parameters of the filter. I can imagine that different image sizes will react differently to varied grain intensities. For example, the grain settings you have might be too much for a lower resolution image

The problem when using soft light layer mode is that the grain is not applied to the extreme low tones and the extreme high tones. The grain is missing from these tones. Multiply and screen layer modes will allow grain to show up in the tones.

I wanted to try this out, but in my case the filter galery is greyed out, so unavailable. What do I need to do to get this available. I have PS 2024!
@KeenanReedArts4 жыл бұрын
Yo this is awesome. Always wondered about your method for grain. Thanks for sharing man! Also, do you find any perceivable difference between 8bit and 16bit files? I usually export from C1 using 16bit files. Since the action requires Filter Gallery which is exclusive to 8bit I'd love to hear your thoughts.
@coryphoto4 жыл бұрын
great question. i usually work in 8 bit files, generally for me 16 bit is overkill. since printing my images before finalizing is part of my workflow, i either convert the images to 8 bit before applying the grain or use a work around like this: duplicate the 16bit layer, make it a smart object, open the smart object, convert the bitmap to 8bit, apply the filter, save and return to the 16bit file. i have yet to have any instances in my career when a 8 bit file or banding was an issue. same goes for the high level pro's i have assisted in the past.
@KeenanReedArts4 жыл бұрын
coryphoto sorry for the delayed response but thank you for this detailed response and solution! I appreciate it. You also answered a question I wish I incorporated initially regarding 16bit vs 8bit with print and banding. Great to hear your report in your career about it not impacting the quality of your work and if anything being more suited to print than 16bit. I appreciate you Cory. Thanks again and keep importing us with your work and tools. We’re grateful.

Hello Cory. How you doing ? I have an issue when I flatten my image or just export when it's done. I speak for the full size format : 30MPX for example. The exported image looks more grey and flat than the one I see on photoshop before flattening the final image. Do you have a solution for that ? I'm on 2022 PS. I will try in older version
@coryphoto2 жыл бұрын
apologies for the late reply. this seems like there is an issue with flattening the image or during the saving process. i'm on the newest version of PS and sometimes have issues with flattening heavy lifts or files with a ton of layers. let me know if the issues still persists and i will find an answer for you!
@antoinemercier91122 жыл бұрын
@@coryphoto Hey Cory. I tested newest and older version but still the same problem. It looks like that at 3 grain group layers there is an issue. But at 2, the difference is still manageable. Maybe it's about the PS process of flattering and we can't do anything for that. Thanks !

Thanks a lot for this, Cory! Got one question. The part I don't get is when you're adding more grains to the image, like the one with the lady on the beach, we see the shadows getting a bit darker. Isn't it suppose to be the opposite, like when its done on the first image? Thanks!
@coryphoto3 жыл бұрын
i find that it darkens the image by about 1/2 or 1/3 of a stop, so i always have a curves layer underneath to bump it up. i’ve never experienced the image lightening when i add grain. thanks for watching!
@paperbackfreigther95283 жыл бұрын
@@coryphoto Cory, but I still don't understand why at 4m 50s, when you add grains, we can clearly see that it lightens image. That's why I was asking for the ladys image because its doing the opposite. Thanks for your answer and awesome work.
