Personally, having grown up with film being the norm, I find the biggest difference is in how the light is captured. With film, light chemically affects a surface. In that sense it's organic from start to finish. With digital, light affects sensors, which are interpreted / converted into 0's and 1's, further algorithms or enhancements are done automatically on every image depending on the manufacturer to make the picture turn out "better", etc. In the end, I just find that how our eyes work function much more closely to the way film works than the way anything digital works, which somehow makes film photos able to connect with the power of our own memories, and bring back the feeling of light captured by a material which is much more closely able to resemble our own experience than digital.

Somebody else already mentioned it, but the way the “moment” is captured on film is as authentic as it gets. I’ve noticed smartphone cameras are now employing a lot more processing, layering photos with lots of wizardry to get a final product. But that’s not necessarily what you really “saw”. There was an example I saw recently on Twitter where somebody took a photo with the iconic Hollywood sign in the distant background. The software had actually screwed up and it instead looked like a jumbled mess, akin to AI trying to “draw” hands and putting six fingers instead of five. It really made me think about how detached some digital photos are really just approximations of reality instead of reality itself. A mass of 1’s and 0’s fed through an algorithm to give you what the computer thinks it sees. I’ve only recently started shooting film with my dads old Pentax MV, it’s nothing special but looking through the lens and capturing that moment permanently on film made it feel special compared to carelessly snapping 100 random photos on my smartphone or with a digital camera. That’s not to say I won’t shoot digital, it’s expensive to use and process film but it definitely has an important place in photography and I’m relieved that at least for now it will remain available for the masses. Oh I should add I’m getting a Lomography sprocket rocket camera for my birthday, I saw some photos from it and it’s got a very unique aesthetic having the entire film exposed including the sprockets, very unique and definitely something you wouldn’t get with digital cameras! There’s a funky experimental side to film that I imagine some people go wild for with their creativity!

I’ve been taking pictures since I was 7 or 8 years old and never gave up on film. I have a lot of digital gear, but enjoy shooting film way more, much more satisfying and it leaves me in full control.

Yep. Just brought out my three Nikon Fs and bought a Minty Nikon F3 from one of the numerous Japanese camera shops. Already have all the Nikon lenses. Decided to shoot B/W film again, and send the rolls out to The Darkroom for processing and scanning. Also just bought a Canon R5, with EF lens adapter, and got a great use 500mm F4 L IS lens. That, of course, required a gimbal head, and I get to use my heavy duty Tilt-All tripod with it! Looking forward to using my Sekonic light meter with my film cameras,. and eschewing the meters in the film cameras.

It's back but not in the same way. Any self respecting pro or keen photographer always shot Slide film, other than wedding photographers. Neg film was for your mum and dad to take holiday snaps

Legitimate question: have you (or whoever wrote this, as I’m assuming this channel is made by a team) ever used a digital camera?
@kangarooMonkee

This is an inherently condescending question so for the record I think this video is extremely well made, the editing, voice over and a lot of the research is excellent, but some of the things you said just don’t make sense to me.

This makes me so happy. I don't know a thing about photography but people appreciating the process and human touch of any art form is a beautiful thing. Convenient digital solutions are nice and all when you need them but I don't want them to eclipse everything else.

That’s absolutely right MigBird, you don’t need to be a photographer to start with your analog photography journey! The imperfections are what makes it incredible! Hope you liked the video and make sure to subscribe so YT can recommend more of our content to you in the future!

In the mid-2000s, sales of analog film and film cameras were falling fast. In 2022 new labs are popping up, and film manufacturers like Kodak have reported significant sales growth. After fading in popularity, film photography is seeing a major comeback THIS YEAR fueled by younger generations and social media. I have a problem categorizing the film look as having "authenticity". When digital is more real in its rendering...!

What is more important, getting pictures or the process itself? The truth is that in post-processing you can transform digital pictures so that an amateur cannot distinguish it from a 135-film photo. Any old way you want to complicate things to feel special, up to you. All fanatics crank my gears.
