A tip I highly recommend related to your naming convention, specifically related to the date. Start with the Year first, then month and then day of month. That way, when you sort by file name, the computer will compile everything in the proper chronological order. As you have it, beginning with month, if you sort or order by file name, it will group together by the month code first, so Jan files, before going to Feb, and so on. But the years (being last) would be all over the place.

Hey Kyle, mount your strip in coolscan holder under the glass. In most cases curly strips are bowed a bit to the upper side so you flatten better by undermounting. Second advantage is there is no glass between emulsion and rest of optical path.

Pro tip #3 (auto-numbering): to correctly number your images sequentially automatically, you need to add a +, NOT just a hyphen, Vuescan doesn’t know that you want that enabled, it tries to hint you with the sample text filled. If you just take the time to read the manual, you’ll be amazed at what Vuescan is capable of, its an easy read.

Your scanning routine reminds me of my flatbed scanner days with slow scans, large blurry 35mm files, and wanting to rip my hair out! The difference with experience is your setup is the wonderful scanner you have but I still can't see myself going back to a scanner after building myself a dslr scanning setup! Also, my frames are not as detailed as yours as I use a street photo style so some blurry frames is part of my liking! I am also an optimist so in my mind, 1/50 with my tlr handheld could work but not usually especially with moving targets! Keep up the good work!

Thanks Sina. Yep, now that I'm getting results that I'm happy with, the slow process is worth it, but it was always frustrating when I used a flatbed and didn't get the scans I wanted. We all have our own processes that work for us, and that's the beauty of it.

Hey Kyle, fan of the channel and fellow coolscan user (8000). I recently started using nikon scan on a MacBook Pro running bootcamp. It is a little bit of a headache switching back and forth, and using nikon scan software is it's own special hell, but it is worth it once you get used to it. Scanner runs faster in every way (thumbnail previews especially). Stellar scans straight out of the program when utilizing the rgb channel tools. I also feel like the banding problem is subdued, although still present in dense negatives.

Love your channel, Kyle - you have really helped me with quite a few tips and tricks and insights. But I am looking in amazement at how you handle the negatives in this video - please please tell me that those negatives are worthless ones you only use for demonstration ? I am sure, that if I handled my negatives this way (fingers on the images both on the emulsion side and the back, rough handling etc., rolling them up and keeping them together with elastic bands etc. ?) I would end up having to spend forever correcting scratches, blotches etc. etc. in postprocessing after scanning !!

Great example, Kyle. My workflow is similar, but I scan all the negatives at lower res and have a seperate contact sheet LR librabry. From there I'll choose the images I want to scan at hi res to use for projects. I tend to leave new developed negatives in the binder under a decade of old negatives to flatten it. Sometimes the negs won't see the light of the scanner until 4-6 months later. For some reason, shooting with film is already a slow process but somehow I even made it much more slower with my workflow. LOL

Great video, man. I've tried to practice a lot of similar methods in my workflow so it's nice to know I'm not too far off base from a normal routine. Can't wait for the VueScan/NLP video, I've been wanting to switch for a while but always find myself hesitating that it'll make a difference. I use a v600 and between the colour and banding issues, trying to keep the film flat and getting anything to look as sharp as it should it really eats away at my confidence. Do you find that VueScan auto focus helps at all for 120?

@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The 9000 is no longer available new. It has been discontinued for a long time now. What makes it so special is the fact that there really isn't much competition when it comes to dedicated film scanners that can do 120 and 35mm. Minolta made one, which is also good, but Nikon was top of the game in this style back in the day. There are a few current companies making some dual format scanners, but I don't have any experience with them, and have heard mixed reviews.

Hey Andrew, I've found Vuescan/NLP to be the best workflow so far, for me. It was always hit or miss before that using just epson scan, or Vuescan. I've also found the Coolscan 9000 to give me way cleaner files with less colour noise.
@drunacres
@drunacres 4 жыл бұрын
The file name has a template that you can tell Vuescan to add sequence or a date for example. If you tell the output dialogue that the file name should be AAA+ for example, it will replace the "+" with the sequence. For a date put in the name "DDMMYY" (or whatever you preferred date format is) and it will replace with the date. Check out the 3D printed scan trays that can really hold the film flat. Only downside is you can only scan one frame at a time.

When naming your project folders, don't use an acronym/shortened name. Interesting process. I suggest you make a pixel peeping video comparing the resolution with a 6x6 cm digital sensor to the scanning of a 6x6 cm negative. Will the gain from using a film - I imagine better transitions - not be counteracted by the following digital scan and result in the same digitized quality? Is this method a way for you to avoid the insane prices of pro digital backs or do you believe in a gain of quality?
@KyleMcDougall

@Eigil_Skovgaard
@Eigil_Skovgaard 3 жыл бұрын
@@KyleMcDougall Yes, fine, but my point was this: What happens to "the way film renders tones", when the image ends up digitized anyway? Do you still have a gain in transitions? I would like to see somebody who claims to see a difference make a serious comparison - not to put you to work - but to find out how much better quality you can get from a scanned film compared to a digital back. I have made lots of prints from film directly to paper and no doubt that films on silver based papers rendered a better tonality.

If you can't afford a Coolscan, could you recommend a flatbed? V850 Pro?
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
If I were in the market for a flatbed, I’d probably look for a V700 or 750. Bit cheaper than the 850 and nearly as good. Or if you’re just starting out, you could always pick up an older one. I have a V4990, and it performs great.

Great video, Kyle! But, as I watched I found myself thinking... "Wow, he does FULL resolution scans for every negative?" I know you said you're that a particularly prolific shooter, but that workflow must take quite a bit of time? I scan an entire roll in the PrintFile sleeve on my flatbed scanner, print it, and keep this in a binder along with the corresponding PrintFiile page. Then, I only scan to full resolution those images I elect to work on. One could certainly argue that your workflow enables one to know better what's in an archive, but do we really care about the "also ran" images? I don't. But, that's why we all have these individual workflows... ;)

Alan Huntley interesting point, however the more you handle the film with your hands, the more likely you are to introduce dust scratch, debris, etc. there is certainly validity to only scanning once, I’m not sure if that’s his philosophy, but if storage space isn’t a concern, then it’s only time that is invested
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, yeah, fair points. This is a workflow that very much 'a work in progress', especially now that I have a scanner that I feel like is capable of producing results I'm happy with. I very well may try the contact sheet approach in the future, but for now, I'll keep scanning high res, and see where that takes me. I just feel like in the past I maybe looked over images, but once I scanned them at full res and put some time into editing them, I actually liked them. I guess maybe I'm just worried about missing something.
@alanhuntley55
@alanhuntley55 3 жыл бұрын
@@KyleMcDougall Yeah, I agree that one might miss something because looking at small contact size images--especially with 35mm--really doesn't tell you much about how that image. On my next few rolls, I'm going to try your workflow and see how I get on with it.

Hi Kyle, love your channel! Please let me recommend you Silverfast over Vuescan. Get yourself this piece of software and you won´t look behind. BTW, I use a similar workflow as you but scanning HDRi to allow me for dust removal if necessary and not converting to TIFF in the end. For me the day of taking picture and location is key. I don´t use collection for rolls. Film stock and camera is a bonus with the last version of NLP which allow the keywording /metadata for sorting the pictures. You just have to take care by putting the date during scanning. Filtering your images with the custom attributes allow you to have your analog portfolio as it would be digital. Cheers

I just wish Silverfast wasn't almost $500 for the version that's compatible with the Coolscan 9000.
