The playful slow-motion boxing between Tony and Sil, including the musical cue, is a reference to Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull from 1980, starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty, Frank Vincent (Phil Leotardo), and many other familiar faces. It's a biography of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta. Like The Sopranos, it walks a fine line between depressing and howlingly funny. It won Oscars for best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best cinematography, best sound, and best editing. Needless to say, highly recommended.

Did you notice the cardboard cutout of Silvio in the background? When Tony and Crew get to the safe house and want to order a pizza....look in the background. The production team thought it'd be sacrilege to not have a Silvio presents in a scene with the crew together

Christopher's actor asked David Chase what he saw in Jim Gandolfini and why his smile was so noteworthy. Chase said it was because Jim had a lot of sadness in his eyes that would go away when he'd smile. The man was born for the role of Tony Soprano (among other things like being a father)

The tension in this episode😲 in a lot of ways it does confirm Jersey being a "glorified crew". Sloppy with the attemped hit on Phil, slow to react, Bobby leaving his phone to do his hobby & missing the call, Sil not armed & prepared leaving the Bing - an obvious place to find him. As soon as they got those two tip offs they should have reacted. NY definitely a slicker operation

I have mixed feelings over Melfi in this episode, as you mentioned this came after six seasons and twenty episodes. A bit too late. And even the actress who plays Melfi thinks it could've been handled different. But I kind of get it, in a way. Melfi is meant to be an audience surrogate, even though Tony demonstrates us time and time again that he honestly shouldn't be trusted or root for, we continue with him. By this point the series Tony is pretty much an irredeemable monster, we can no longer pretend Tony isn't one. Just as Elliot makes fun of Melfi, since she's meant to be our audience surrogate it's the show making fun of us for sticking with Tony for this long. Even if we somehow abruptly end it, we still rooted for him. I get it, in like a meta symbolism way. I agree with Lorraine Bracco that it should've been more impactful than just stopping all tracks, but I guess it tracks with how things happen in this show. We sometimes don't get a proper ending before it's already over just like life.

Melfi dropping Tony after being confronted about how her therapy would not cure him of his criminality is pointless since being cured of being a crook was never the point of him going to her in the first place. She turned out to be a pretty lousy therapist as she was apparently imposing her own goals and delusional desires into the situation the whole time and then shows little real concern for her patient when her bubble is finally burst.
@laurensb1b
@laurensb1b 5 ай бұрын
Yes exactly, Tony came in with a clearly stated goal of not passing out from panic attacks anymore. That goal was achieved long ago, but Melfi never went through with sending Tony to a behaviourist and just kept him around because she had her own fascination with him.
@RonaldRobert-us7qk
@RonaldRobert-us7qk 5 ай бұрын
@@laurensb1b Melfi tried. But understand, Italian-Americans from that area, would understand things without necessarily being involved in them. It's an Italian thing. It's hard to articulate. Remember, she was going to drop him, then the Employee of the Month entered. She wanted the protection and the distance of respectability. That said, she was bullied by her ex and her therapist both times she tried to severe her professional relationship with Tony. Maybe both of them should have respected her as a professional who dealt with this patient on a weekly (assuming he showed up) basis for seven years.

I understand what you are saying about how Tony dealt with AJ (especially after what just happened with the $ui$ide attempt). However, it is a life and death situation, and absolutely the wrong time for AJ to be dealing with emotions and things like that. If they don't move immediately, they could all be next on the hit list. There are rules in the mafia of course, but I would not trust NY to follow them, or maybe it could just be that one of Tony's family was a witness or got in the way. Best thing is to get out of house and on the road immediately, and deal with the issues and depression once the family is safe.
@RonaldRobert-us7qk
@RonaldRobert-us7qk 5 ай бұрын
It was pointed out that AJ only has anxiety when asked to deal with reality or responsibility. If you pay attention to that confrontation, only flips out when he's told/asked to listen to his mother and act accordingly.

@@RonaldRobert-us7qk Yes, I definitely agree with that. Also, the way I was raised, when a boy reaches puberty he needs to "man up". I know a lot of people today don't agree with that. However, I think it is ok to push young boys to be stronger. Unfortunately some can get real depressed. The tough part is knowing how and when to deal with this kind of issue. P.S. I think mothers are nurturers by nature, and too much coddling can be detrimental to a young boys growth into becoming a man.

I, wholeheartedly, agree with Tony that Dr. Melfi was, definitely, being unethical in terminating his therapy in such a fashion.
@laurensb1b
@laurensb1b 5 ай бұрын
Melfi was unethical in continuing Tony's sessions in the first place. Tony came to her with the goal of not passing out from panic anymore. When that goal was achieved there was nothing more Melfi could do for him with talk therapy. She knew this and even her colleagues warned her that this type of therapy is ineffective on people like Tony. She kept it going anyway, because of her own fascination with Tony. Hell you could argue that in this episode, for the first time in about 4 seasons, Melfi actually behaves like a therapist again.

@@laurensb1b I don't know. Unless we view Melfi as a total incompetent, she saw things in Tony at the beginning ,which we all saw as an audience, as someone capable of and willing to change. One of my favorite parts of the show is that they used the real life story of FBI Special Agent DeVecchio and what he did for the Colombo Family. They just changed the names to Harris and Soprano. I have a fun theory for you, Paulie’s real father is Hugo’s friend Russ Figoli, from the Marco Polo episode, the cultured Italian that insulted tony. This theory has legs too, Paulies real mother, Dottie, said she got knocked up by a soldier named Russ. In “Marco Polo” it is said that Russ and Hugo were old army buddies, in that same episode it’s also stated that Russ can’t have tomatoes because of his prostate issues. Fast forward to season 6, Paulie’s doctor asks him if there is a history of prostate cancer in his family, with his father maybe. Paulie says he’s not sure. I truly think David chase leaves breadcrumbs for us to figure things out. Russ Figoli, Hugo’s friend, is Paulie’s real father.

So why the odd shot of the bedroom door at the end with the creepy piano music?? What’s that about? One theory is Tony dies in that bed that very night & everything that happens when he wakes up in the morning doesn’t actually happen. Hence the final episode is Tony’s final trip to purgatory/hell & everything that happens in the final episode is what Tony experiences for the rest of eternity in hell. Sounds way out there but there was a purpose in that slow close up shot of the bedroom door. Notice when Tony lays down on the bed at night there’s no sheets or bedding of any kind. Just mattresses. Will it be like that when he wakes up in the morning??

Melfi was told already in season 1 by colleagues that treating a sociopath was pointless, or even worse counterproductive in the sense that you just end up making them better criminals. Melfi has known this the ENTIRE show and ignored this information, because she had a fascination with Tony. There was a moment, I think in season 2, were Melfi tried to recommend a different, more appropriate type of therapy for Tony. Tony waived it off and Melfi went along with it, but as far as I'm concerned that was the end of the therapeutic relationship. Melfi knew full well she has reached the limits of what can be achieved with talk therapy, but she kept seeing him anyway. It's not until this second to last episode that the show finally addresses this.
