Phenomenal acting from Robert Iler in this episode. I don't think enough credit is given in general to either Iler as A.J. or Aida Turturro as Janice. Their characters drive us all absolutely crazy, but that's a real testament to the believability both actors bring to their roles. I don't think of them as annoying characters on a show. I think of them as annoying people I actually know. After 6+ seasons of seriously wanting to strangle A.J., Robert Iler's performance in this episode is absolutely heartbreaking. I just want to give the kid a hug.

AJ’s foray into existentialism has always been one of the funniest undertones of the show, back in the earlier seasons and even DURING his suicide attempt (which is gut-wrenchingly sad but Tony’s reaction always makes me laugh at first). It encapsulates how the show tackles devastating, mature themes while sprinkling in unparalleled comedy about the deepest parts of life, same with Tony’s attempt to explain the meaning of life to a bunch of guys whose job it is to snuff it out

The craziest thing about this episode is that it completely cements Phil’s arc as a character. He did 20 years in the can and then turned into a house.

The synopsis of the erie but powerful final track ... Ninna Ninna Lullaby from Sardinia. The mother sings to her little boy. His father, a brigand, escaped to the mountains and is being followed. She sings “Antoneddu, little Anton, I’d rather see you dead than a bandit in the mountains.” So that she will not have to disclose her husband’s whereabouts, she too will go into the mountains. Her son sings “Mama, mama, when I live in the mountains, I won’t fall into dishonor.” In the third stanza, the ghost-like voice of the father is heard: “Sing o beautiful, sing o beautiful, all around me it’s quiet and I only hear you singing.”

24:00 rewatching this show with a more mature mindset as I've aged since I last seen it has made me realize AJ is the way he is quite literally only becuase of his awful family. Livia, Tony and Carm all set him up for failure from the beginning. AJ could have taken better accountability for his actions, but it's so clear his family ruined him. I mean, just go back to the first time AJ brought up the absurdity of life where he says god isn't real to T and Carm and they shut him down so quick without even being interested in what he has to say, basically just invaliditng any curiosity he has. There's so many examples of this throughout the show, it's really sad.

Hey Ellie, great pickup on the scene with Tony, Little Carmine, Butchie, and Phil. That scene is so strong and has so many layers to it, and has so many ways it can be interpreted. It also reminds me of his dreams and that house that Livia is in. This episode is without a doubt in my top 5 of the entire series!

You’re right the decline in standards is real, one minute New York are losing it over a fat joke, next minute Chris’ mother is being threatened and Tony’s daughter sexually harassed and no retaliation expected
@RonaldRobert-us7qk9 ай бұрын
Carmine Sr. didn't respect Jersey, but he did respect Tony. Johnny Sack was friends with Tony, and respected the money Jersey brought in. Phil, with Butchie in his ear, disrespects Jersey, Tony, and the whole glorified crew over there.

Some facts abt this episode - Terrence Winter wanted the AJ suicide scene to be tragic but "humoruous" ie the cinder block drowning method lol. AJ was too dumb to even kill himeself. Winter had an idea of AJ trying to shoothim self but ends up shooting his foot, but he wanted to use the pool as a connection to the ducks in season 1 which ties in the theme of loss of family. Also, Robert Iler actually had to drown himself, it was all real and there were lifeguards on set.
@valthestudio48869 ай бұрын
Now THIS is an interesting BTS fact. I think Terrence Winter is probably the best writer on the show.

In a previous episode, I think it was Cold Cuts, Melfi quotes The Second Coming poem to Tony. "The falcon cannot here the falconer. The center cannot hold." Tony's replied, "What the hell are you talking about?" If only they both knew then how important it was for Tony to have tried to understand. God this show is brilliant!

oh yea another fact about this episode from Terrence Winter- the coco curb stomp was intentional because before, T said he's going "talk to" somebody about Coco. it's a connection since both actions have to do something with the mouth (talking and putting the mouth on the curb).

Interesting note, since the debate on whether or not Tony is actually a sociopath is coming: the study Eliot references seems to concentrate on convicted criminals. Presumably, these people were forced into therapy, so they have reason to con their way out. Tony voluntarily went and stayed in therapy. So, does it apply to him to the letter? 🤔
@JB-gv3lo8 ай бұрын
I agree I get annoyed when people say tony is definitively a sociopath, he definitely has sociopathic tendencies, but a show as ambiguous as the sopranos obvious leaves it open ended for the viewer to decide Also he holds back tears in his last scene with Junior in Made in America

I hate AJ but his scream and cry always makes me tear up and get some goosebumps (probably also due to Tony being the most nurturing and softest spoken we've seen him for a split second outside of animals and women). Obviously AJ and Meadow's actors were great just being the typical teens they were in the earlier seasons but they both stepped it up when the time came for their characters to change especially AJ's actor Robert who really got me with the Uncle Jr knife scene, subsequent scene he shared with Tony and ofc the pool scene in this episode.

One of my favorite fight moves the "curb check" / curb stomp and they did it indoors. Not only are you at minimum putting the guy in the hospital with no teeth so physically extremely painful but since you put his mouth there or even worse making him hold it there you are humiliating him on a completely different level. Very popular in the 90s

I've been watching this series since its original run, and my dumb ass just noticed that after the conversation Melfi has with her therapist about sociopaths, they cut to AJ'S session where he is honing his skills on not taking responsibility for his own behavior and putting everything on his parents. With the bus analogy, your views on that are a product of your youth. Tony is a grown man at a different point in his life. The child gets dropped off and has to learn to stand on its own two feet and not constantly look to have the bus available at any given moment to save him. You have a childs / adolescent viewpoint still.

So it's interesting that AJ seems to be using the therapy to become more manipulative, and not so much Tony. In the family session AJ is using all of the therapy speak to belittle his parents about things like the raincoat. I am not sure if David Chase did that on purpose or what.

Sadness aside cause ugh, AJ breaks my heart this episode but what the fuck kinda hot dog is that?! 🤢😂 I feel the death of the envelope is the saddest death of the entire series 😫 Phil & his crew are a different breed, no respect just straight ruthlessness 😓 As hard as Tony has tried to keep his family life & the mafia separate, both worlds feel as if they’re colliding. News of AJ’s failed suicide attempt obviously got to Phil & his crew, kinda makes Tony look weak so why not go after his family since Tony B harmed his family, could’ve just been coincidence as he seemed drunk but I wouldn’t put it past Phil & his crew. The kids have nothing to do with this game but cause of that name, unfortunately they do. Meadow loving “Borat” is fucking great lmao 😂 But I’m glad Meadow is trying her best to at least talk to AJ & hear him out, just be there cause Tony & Carmela are too busy or rather too distracted to pay attention to him. PS: Coco’s toof stuck in Tony’s pant leg, hilarious 😂

Interesting that Tony completely made up this “momma bus driver” story when explaining his peyote trip to Melfi. Did anyone here see a bus during T’s peyote trip?? So why would he try to impress Melfi with a pretend insight on parenting?? Seems he’s trying to deflect to create this image he’s not a terrible parent & deep down he has profound insights on parenting. And Melfi seems to buy his BS story too. Demonstrates that Tony is a very effective liar. Even cons Melfi from time to time. The scene where Philly turns into a house wasn’t planned that way. It’s an example of emergency script/shoot change. The actor playing Philly had something happen & it was impossible for him to be on set for awhile so they turned him into a house.
