How great is it that Omar offers the drugs back to Joe at 20 on the dollar and Joe tells the co-op it was 30 on the dollar. Still finds a way to grab some money for himself. No other show would do this. Every other show would have a scene where Joe schemes with cheese and talks about how he could make a little extra money. But not the wire. Joe just says 30 and if you miss it, you miss it. This show is brilliant.

Bodie's death scene is one of the best scenes in television history. This is not my analysis but something I remember reading many years ago. His death is a game of chess and he is a pawn which was set up in his conversation with McNulty earlier in the episode. He even shots his gun diagonally like a pawn attacks in chess. He cannot retreat because pawns cannot retreat. Poot is a rook. He is able to see the danger and is able to quickly get out of there. Chris and Snoop are bishops they get into danger quickly but can get out of danger quickly and are sent out to get shit done. Finally, O-Dog (the guy that kills Bodie) is a knight. He even steps off a stoop forward, turns and takes a few steps to shoot Bodie, exactly how a knight moves in chess. Weirdly enough, the knight was not one of the pieces Dee talked about when he taught Bodie and Wallace in season 1. Bodie knew Chris and Snoop would be coming, because he was familiar with the bishops in chess, but he didn't see O-Dog because he never learned about the knights. I have to feel this was intentional, since they did bring up Bodie being a pawn earlier in the episode. Masterpiece level shit.

One thing that I want to point out. The way Bodie got killed, it goes back to Season 1, with D'Angelo and teaching Wallace and Bodie about Chess. D'Angelo really only taught them the movement of a few pieces. The Queen, The Rook, and the Pawn. When looking at O-Dogs movement, he gets killed in the movement of a Knight piece, one of the pieces that D'Angelo never taught him. In a way he got struck down by a piece he was never taught about. It came at him like a shadow in the dark. On another note, Little Kevin died in the same way Wallace died. Wallace never snitched but Bodie and Poot was put at the order to kill him all the same. Little Kevin didn't snitch but the same orders got put out and the same thing happen to him. The game is the game and that order goes out to take out people even with the thought of snitching. The different is, Little Kevins death struck Bodie harder.

J.D. Williams (the actor who played Bodie) said in one of the cast meetup QNAs that he predicted he'd be killed off before the script for this episode was handed out, because of how things have been going for his character throughout the show with no movement in the ladder. He said people tried to shush him when he started talking about getting killed off like "Don't say that, they'll hear you!". Him turning snitch on Marlo, and having lunch with McNulty, was a hint that he's eating his last meal before execution. On a side note though, it's hilarious how even Cheese, who's all about the gangsta life, was completely outraged at Omar's shipment sale.

Every first scene in the season is setting the theme. My second favorite Opening: "getting schooled on a new topic by relating to what they already know" although third sesaon with destroying the Towers while the major speaks about solutions for cheap housing and Bodie talks about always making the same damn mistakes concerning Poot and his hospitalvisits because of women... and all thats left is a whole lot of ashes and dust just like hamsterdam at the end of the season... also perfect. I think "Fathers" are a really important topic for the wire. Greek to Spiros "you like the boy Nicki - you should have had a son" Spiros "Yeah, but than I had a wife and than there is that"... Ronda and Daniels about Freamon "Did he look you in the eyes over his glasses - with this look that says "Iiii am the father you never had..."" I guess because its so much mentoring in this show... as bubbles says - trying to make them brown while they are still green... its almost the only thing that makes these men see value in their lives. Cutty, Bunny, Bubbles, Freamon, Prez... all learned how to be great teachers. Its not micheal - Chris said "he worked with Bodie - first one shouldnt be one he knows"

But now you get all defensive about Randy being Cheese's son because you didn't know it and you can't stand that. Simon himself confirmed it so even if it's not actually mentioned on screen doesn't make it false. It would have been mentioned if they had had more screen time available. It's okay to be wrong and admit it, there's personal growth in that.

It's not Michael who kills Bodie. And the ties to the chess scene don't end at the talk with McNulty. If you watch rhat scene closely, you'll see that Chris and Snoop close in at odd angles, like a bishop would. Bodie shoots at them diagonally, the only way a pawn can. In the end, his killer does an L move from behind a door and sneaks ip on Bodie, like a knight. Incidentally, knights and bishops were the only pieces Dee didn't teach Bodie about. All this detail from a 3 minute scene. There's another call back in the way that Bodie understood, in that conversation with McNulty, that he was living a lie. He though if he played his cards right, he'd get to be a queen. And a part of him still abides by that and feels proud for being called a soldier. But he also realises he's never gonna be anything other than a pawn. And it's also fitting that he dies this season, when we met him, he was just like these kids. And though he feels old, he's only 19-20 when he dies.
@thegrimner7 ай бұрын
And I told you before, every season's first scene gives away the theme for the season. 1st season was the streets, 2nd was the death of the working class, 3rd was reform, 4th education, and 5th, we'll cross that road when we get there.
