Spaceballs (1987)
Spaceballs is a 1987 American space opera parody film co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks. It is primarily a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy, but also parodies other sci-fi films and popular franchises including Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Transformers. The film stars Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Rick Moranis, with the supporting cast including Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Lorene Yarnell, and the voice of Joan Rivers. In addition to Brooks playing a dual role, the film also features Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca in cameo appearances.

Coby, the voice for Pizza the Hutt was Dom DeLuise and yes, Dot's voice is Joan Rivers. The actor in the suit for Dot is the mime Lorene Yarnell from Shields and Yarnell. One of George Lucas' stipulations for permission to parody his franchise was that the Han Solo character couldn't be costumed like he is in Star Wars hence the idea to make him look instead like Indiana Jones. And if you didn't ever figure it out, Mel Brooks played 2 roles in this film...he is President Skroob and Yogurt. Also, Michael Winslow from Police Academy is the radar officer that got jammed doing all those crazy sound effects he is known for. Lucas loved the script so much that he offered the services of ILM to do the visual effects which is why they are top notch for 1987. Some of the escape pod footage is actually unused film from A New Hope. After our heroes get rescued by the "jawas' thru walking up to the scary stage of Yogurt is a veiled reference to the Wizard of Oz. I'm sure you can get which Spaceballs character translates to which character in Oz. One other thing: the doll playing scene was a last minute suggestion by Mel to Rick that he totally improvised on the spot.

Great reaction Coby like always i love Mel brooks movies. A fun fact...when Rick Moranis says 'why don't we take a five minute break', it's exactly 5 minutes in the film before we see the spaceballs again. In case you didn't realize, or know, the late Sir John Hurt was the guy who had the alien come out of him. He was the original actor from Alien as well. Some great little bit's a pieces about this film which makes it funnier when you know. By the way, the guy making the sounds is the legendary Michael Winslow. You can see more of him in Police Academy. Mel Brooks had to get permission from George Lucas who only agreed on the grounds that they sold no merchandise and that Lone Starr couldn't dress as Han Solo. So brooks filled the movie with fake merch and dressed Lone Starr like Indiana Jones instead. There's polystyrene cups everywhere cause cast and crew kept leaving them all over the set, so Brooks just wrote them into the film. And one of my favorite joke of the movie is the stunt double one. There are a lot of 4th wall breaking jokes in the movie (the spaceball cassette, the cameraman getting slashed by Darth Helmet, Yoghurt doing merchandising stuff because "it's where real money from the movie is made" but the stunt double one really made me lose it completely as it was completely unexpected. It was so well done! Keep up the good work. I suggest reaction to more Mel Brooks movies all of the are hilarious.

It and History of the World part one are a couple of my favorites but you can't do wrong with Brooksfilms. Always good for a laugh and you will likely catch more jokes on rewatch too, like President Skroob's name is just Brooks rearranged. What I really love about this movie: it not only makes fun of the originals, but is also a loving homage to Star Wars. The incredible attention to detail in the film sets, costumes and equipment alone, as well as the many allusions to the content, requires that the audience knows the original very well in order for the gags to work. At the same time, the movie takes the nonsense to the absolute extreme.

Fun fact the Spaceball soldier (Tim Russ) in the desert at 28:52 that says "we ain't found #### " went on to play Lt. Tuvok the resident Vulcan on the series Star Trek Voyager as well as other various characters in other Star Trek properties

It doesn't seem that anyone gets that Chapter Eleven is the US Code chapter for bankruptcy.
@charlesmaurer6214
@charlesmaurer6214 12 күн бұрын
Chapter 11 is just one type of bankruptcy in the bankruptcy code, 7 is liquidation for example. 13 or 11 is used for restructuring and limiting liabilities, there is even a Chapter for governments, yet to be used by the one that needs it most. Mom retired from the court as a chief deputy clerk. I think at the time Mel knew Lucas planned 9 movies and just wanted a larger odd number. You also see another sequel joke in the news reports. By this point Lucasfilm and a few others were known for pumping out chains of movies, Spielburg even bashes one of his own in Back to the Future II with Jaws.

As a Brit, I'd never got that Chapter 11 joke obviously. I just assumed it was a random big number to take the piss out of Star Wars being 4,5,6, then 1,2,3 etc. So it's actually 2 jokes for the price of 1.... nice 😀

I doubt anybody noticed but Dark Helmet's tie is also a "cock & balls" :)) once you see it you will never unsee it :)) You are the first person to react to this movie and got the Col. Sanders / chicken joke. When they are combing the desert the one guy that says " we ain't found shit" is Tim Russ who also play Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager :)

Coby didn't think I could love you more! Great reactions! Anyone that can appreciate Mel is beloved to me! He really takes the piss outa everything with this. You have great folks that have made so many awesome comments here preceding. Mel gets better with each dram much like scotch! You will laugh at all his cheeky and red line encroaching movies! I've worked with a dozen guys in my life who were just like Yogurt and learned a ton of Schwartz wisdom from them each. The life imitating art dynamic is so fun in his movies! Thank You!

John Hurt also played Kane who was the victim of the Chestburster in Alien, which is the clear spoof near the end. On a side note, the song that the alien sing is Ragtime Gal sung by Michigan J Frog from the Chuck Jones directed Merrie Melodies cartoon One Froggy Evening. In fact, the whole sound clip comes from that short apart from the ending which was tweaked for the movie.

In the DVD commentary, Mel Brooks said he initially wanted the entire movie to be the opening scroll of Spaceball One, two hours of a slow pan across the ship (which would have been substantially longer…)

4:44 Yes. Mel gave Lucas the script, George loved it and gave his permission on two conditions: Mel could not sell any merchandise for the movie (which led to Mel doing the gift shop scene with Yogurt). Mel also wanted to dress Lonestar like Han Solo, Mel didn't agree to that, so Mel dressed him like Indiana Jones instead. Also, Industrial Light and Magic (Lucas' company) did the effects for this movie.

One of my favorite Mel Brooks films. Some years back he said he was ready to finally do Spaceballs 2: The Search for more Money. He was just waiting on Rick Moranis to come out of retirement. Brooks even had Dark Helmets helmet . Unfortunately too much time has passed. Two of the original stars are dead, & Rick Moranis has shown zero inkling of wanting to come back into the comedy/acting field.

Nice to see the super lovely Coby back again!😊🌹 This is a very fun parody film!😆 Yep, that IS the voice of Joan Rivers, good call Coby!👏 Daphne Zuniga is also right! You are very knowledgeable about celebrities! Dom DeLuise is the voice of "Pizza the Hut". He is probably best known from the "Cannonball Run" films with Burt Reynolds. Tim Russ (Tuvok - Star Trek: Voyager) is the Trooper with the giant hair pick. TRIVIA - People ask him more questions about this film than Star Trek!🤯 Stephen Tobolowsky is the Captain of the Guard. Brenda Strong (Desperate Housewives) is the nurse. Tony Cox (Bad Santa) is a Dink. Felix Silla (TWIKI - Buck Rogers) is a Dink. Phil Hartman is the voice of a Dink. Mime Lorene Shields of the mime team Shields and Yarnell plays the physical body of Dot Matrix. Twins Charlene & Marlene (Denise and Dian Gallup) are Doublemint Gum Twins from the TV commercials. Of course the voice talents of Michael Winslow (Police Academy films) are on display here. Great reactions to this fun comedy, Coby!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 Yep, Dick Van Patton starred in the 70s to 80s TV series "Eight is Enough".

33:18 "The nurse is, um...." That's a very young Brenda Strong. She was Lillian Luthor, Lex Luthor's mother, on the T.V. show Supergirl. Or you might know her as the ship captain (mentor to young Carmen) in Starship Troopers. Or apparently she was also on Desperate Housewives for nearly a decade, but I'm not familiar with that one.

13:55 John Candy’s character Barf was a Mawg (half man/half dog) because Chewie from Star Wars was named after George Lucas’ dog. Also… Though Dom Deluise was the voice of Pizza the Hut, there was an actual actor in the suit. Unfortunately, that had to be a one shot stunt. The suit was covered in real pizza toppings. It wasn’t fake cheese, sauce and pepperoni, it was real melted cheese, tomato sauce and cooked pepperoni. So it was the same temperature as a real pizza served at a restaurant. The inside of the suit was a literal oven. The actor suffered heat exhaustion to the point of almost actual heat stroke. After one shot of the scene, he had to be pulled out of the suit. After the first shot, he refused, on medical advice, not to go back in the suit. Other actors and stuntmen also refused as well. So they had to use what footage they had managed to record.

Pizza the Hut's costume was really made of pizza toppings which got pretty rank by the end of the shoot. The actor who played the radar operator is Michael Winslow who is famous for his impersonations.
