Film Study: How well did Aidan O'Connell play for the Las Vegas Raiders?

The way I see it, O'connell was more efficient against more of the Vike's starters, was under more pressure than Minshew. I wonder if they start minshew the next game to see how he does against stiffer competition and make their decision then. I like how scrappy Minshew is just as a Raiders persona thing, but O'Connell has more room to grow as a QB considering it'll be his first full year starting... if they are even close I say give it to O'Connell.

The thing that concerns me most about Minshew is he won't climb the pocket. He'll either back up too much or exit the pocket. It makes protection much harder. And he got a TE killed. He's a gamer and I love his mobility, but I think AOC will be more consistently productive.

As a raidazz fan, I’m pissed that we couldn’t land a decent qb. Hell, I’d take Tom Brady at this point. We lost gruden because he thought he had free speech, we got smoked by crapallo and McDaniels, we spent a lot of money on Adam’s and no one can throw to him. Damn shame. Wish I could’ve picked a better team to be a fan of but I saw the raidazz in the super bowl and that became my team. We’ve been terrible for so damn long.

This is such a tough decision. After watching both your videos, watching the game, listening to Hondo and Q all summer...I think i'd give the job to AOC. I'm not convinced he is better than GM, but I think most people would agree GM has had his chance and hes proven he has a relatively low ceiling. No knock on him, I think he is one of the best backup QBs in the league, I just want to know what AOCs ceiling is before giving the job to GM. I think Pierce, barring anything going down against Dalls, should give the job to AOC and if he's not happy by mid-season lets flip over to GM and spend what we need to spend over the summer to get a top QB draft. Unless GM has a renaissance and becomes the new Jim Plunkett of course.

Pretty much what I have been saying, AOC ceiling is unknown and minshew you know what he is. I would roll with AOC if he has a meltdown over the first 4 games you got a solid guy that can win some games at back up.

Anyone from Oakland knows accuracy is the only trait that matters -ask Bill Walsh and Montana. But I also think the competition has been critical since without it look at what happened to Carr - no growth, repeat mistakes, total loss of full potential (my opinion)… players just play better w competition. Human nature I suppose.

Having watched all of AOC last season games, and this, I think his game and future is defined on the 3rd and 3 play: He did a correct throw, probably to the intended receiver, but he has Tre Tucker open for a TD, he even looks at him. I think that if he starts to do those plays and get that confidence to trust his ability to make those throws, that will be his difference maker between Minshew and him. He definitely has the arm and accuracy to do that, he just needs to trust himself.

It seems the pump-fake is a lost art, there are 2 instances where Tucker beat his guy for a TD and in both cases there was time for a pump-fake and bomb. I hope the QB's are able to find him a few times per game, cause he's going to get discouraged being that wide open for nothing.

His first reads ran into each other and RB was covered on the sack. No time for a 3rd read. I wish he would have slid like he did earlier. Im still leaning AOC. Cowboys will be a good test for Minshew if he starts.

No hospital balls unlike Minshew. Raiders have a lot invested at the TE position. They can't have QB like Minshew tossing up floaters and getting someone hurt. Aidan's arm is quicker this year.

It wasn't 0 and 20 for the first two quarters, it was 3 and 17. I think Aidan looked a little more impressive, going against slightly stiffer defensive competition and completing 78% of his passes, compared to 50% for Minshew. He started backed up against his own endzone and drove all the way down the field: those types of drives are worth their weight in gold in the regular season, as they keep the defense fresh. Minshew seemed to have happy feet a little too much, Aidan was getting pressured but kept getting the ball out quick, except for that last play where there wasn't much he could realistically do with it.

@6:20 so about the WR running the under route that he could have thrown to, he got picked off on that in his 1st game vs the chargers last year in almost an identical situation where the CB broke on the ball and made the play...CAN you throw that? Sure. Should you? Only if it's a big body that can box out the DB Also, he doesn't run into the pressure, he's definitely moving to his right and the guy is coming from his left, on the blindside effectively unblocked.

I like that AOC has an accurate deep ball. He showed it last year. Minshew is a little bit of a gunslinger. He's going to make some very cool plays and some very bad plays. He does have one big fault though. He tends to roll right too much when there is some pressure instead of stepping up. Then the end gets a free chase to him.

a very good pre season effort by AOC. Accurate, faster, showed off strong arm. 95 yard opening drive for points was good, TD would have been better.

The play that he got sacked on, was not going to be a touchdown. anyway !! if you look at the read properly, you would see that that guy would’ve been tackled right away. With that being said, though Aiden !!!! learn to step up in the pocket, always, and then look for the right and left lanes to scramble To be honest with you that is why Tom Brady was so damn good he didn’t do too much in the pocket, but he was very subtle on knowing how to step up and either go left or go right a few feet to get that extra time

Those receiver routes look terrible. On that sack those receivers were in each other's way. I saw the same thing with Mineshew. Im not too impressed with Getsy so far but its early but Chicago fans would complain about the same thing.

Honestly it's hard to say who is doing better our LT play is garbage if we don't get Colton Miller back and JPJ whoever starts is gunna look like shit cause they will be under consistent pressure so we will see in a clean pocket I think AOC wins the job no question but idk if the current line can provide that our right side is questionable and our left side is garbage without Miller and JPJ
