This is a great mashup! Here are some of my favorites in this genre: 1) Antonio Cromartie with the 109 yard missed FG return against the Vikings 2) Any of Aaron Rodgers' Hail Mary passes, but the Richard Rodgers catch was the best 3) James Harrison 99 yard pick 6 in the Super Bowl 4) Marlon McCree intercepts Brady, then fumbles :-(
@jenx5870 Жыл бұрын
That Hail Mary against Detroit was a thing of beauty, and I'm not even a Packers fan. I would add the following: Max McGee - the first person to score in the first Super Bowl, and he did it one handed. I think the one handed catches by Beckham and Tyree (with the help of his helmet), Cobb's 108 yd kickoff return for a TD (I know Patterson just beat it by a yard against the Packers, ironically), but the original belongs in the video, the Boykin TD against the Bears when everyone thought the Rodgers fumble was a dead ball, the winning TD in the Ice Bowl because of the weather conditions, Roethlisberger tackling Harper to prevent a TD, Larry Wilson's one handed interception for a 91 yd TD, The Refrigerator rushing for a 1 yd TD in the Super Bowl, Favre passes to himself then runs in for a TD, Randall Cunningham has some highlights, the Bears 1985 season, Marino fake spike for TD and win against the Jets, the 1972 Dolphins season, Riggins 43 yd TD for a Super Bowl win, Lynn Swann's 53 yd catch and his Super Bowl X performance, Clark's catch in the '81 NFC Championship game to beat the Cowboys (boo), Freeman's catch, Edelman's catch, and of course, the Immaculate Reception. RiP Franco Harris. There are so many incredible plays that deserve to be recognized, that it would be at least a two hour video. Someone would almost have to make one for each team. Even the "worst" teams that have no Super Bowl wins (Vikings come to mind) have some truly great players and plays. They just choke when the pressure is on. I don't understand the decision to perform a lateral pass when all you need are the extra yards. Take the hit, and then start another play from there. One team's great play, is another team's worst day. I think their salary helps them get over it, though.

Outside of context, the play itself wasn't particularly spectacular. Within context, the play occurred at the end of a Divisional Playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders during the 1972 post-season. The Steelers won the game 13-7 against the Raiders to advance to the AFC Championship game against the Miami Dolphins. It was the Steelers franchise's second ever playoff game (first since 1947), and first ever playoff win. Although the Steelers lost that conference championship game, 21-17, 1972 was the turning point season for the Steelers franchise (1933-present), from being the NFL's historical worst through 1971, to becoming the NFL's 2nd greatest franchise during the Super Bowl era, and one of the better historical NFL franchises overall. The 1972 Steelers won the AFC Central Division at 11-3, and went on to win four Super Bowls over six seasons during the 1970s (1974-75, 1978-79 seasons).

The call was actually made by NFL headquarters. They did a frame by frame analysis of the play and made the call by phone. The reasoning goes, on the replay the receiver touched the ball first. That gives him assumed possession. He doesn’t have to maintain control, only contact. His feet hit the ground. Touchdown. The ball is then stripped but it’s a dead ball. If the defender had batted the ball away and it hit the ground the receiver would have to maintain control, not contact. The correct response was to bat the ball into the ground. The Seahawks didn’t win the game so much as the defense lost it by doing the wrong thing. NFL headquarters felt that they needed to explain the rules and the call.

Urlacher was a freak. Urlacher used to also control the opponents oline, would take the entire line with Urlacher to use them to block out the running back from running anywhere. If the runningback would go to the side then Urlacher would take the oline to the side to block the runningback until a defensive player would make a tackle. Those kinds of plays that don't show up in the stat sheet, but make Urlacher one of the greatest middle linebackers of all time.

That Saints lateral (River City Relay) will forever be iconic for 2 reasons: 1. It was an amazing, nearly perfect play 2. Carnie missing the extra point to lose it I hadn’t even started watching football yet, but as a Saints fan this play both still amazes and haunts me. Pretty much sums up the Saints… 🙃

Good call keeping The Immaculate Reception for last. It will be hard to top as #1 all-time fluke play, not only because the play itself is ridiculous, but also because that catch pretty much began nearly a decade of Steelers dominance. And before that play, the Steelers had been terrible since the 30's. The play completely changed the trajectory of the entire franchise for the next 50 years.
