Something I've noticed in the games is that a lot of the greater hot spots, like the Glowing Sea, tend to be around nuclear power plants, rather than just being ground zero for nuclear bombs. Given how common nuclear power sources are in the Fallout universe, it makes sense that meltdowns would be common as well, ranging from power plant sized all the way down to car sized.

I always assumed that, since they produced more radiation than "normal", that they used a bunch of dirty nukes to create as much radiation as possible. Those types of nukes exist. They are called neutron bombs or ERWs. Depending on how much fissile material was thrown out in the fallout, may take up to 30 years for that stuff to decay to a safe level. Not 200 years. Bombing nuclear power plants seems much more likely the reason for the irradiated earth of Fallout. Supposedly, there were tons of them before the bombs dropped.

...ignoring the bots: But would it with these kind of smaller bombs? The fallout being tossed up so high it reaches beyond the atmosphere is as far as I know the biggest issue, as without being as much part of climate and winds, it would take so much longer to drop, causing sunlight to be deflected and a prolonged and wider spread eventual fallout. But these bombs and their mushroom clouds seem to not even quite reach airplane heights? Wouldn't the irradiated ashes drop much quicker (more condensed, though)? Not right away, though, so OP's point seems valid, but within hours. There may not even be a nuclear winter from the depicted bombs... (Or shorter one, because with so many bombs it would still leave the "lower" atmosphere thick with ashes, for a while, causing large scale acid and radiated rains.) - am agreeing, actually, with OP, but think there's even some more misjudgement in the video, if we're actually talking this much smaller bombs.
@Merennulli6 ай бұрын
Those took forever to report them all. Anyway, the danger wasn't fallout, but the initial detonation. For the larger atomic warheads he was close enough for gamma radiation (along with thermal radiation and the blast wave) to be immediate. And the detonation is spherical. In fact, most fallout goes down before being sent upwards with such a low altitude detonation. These are airbursts, but not as high up as you would use normally - which fits with the fallout being greater than expected.
@Tempestwolf796 ай бұрын
I would also include one caveat to the Vaults. As we see when we visit many of the vaults in the games, the Vaults were not necessarily holding their residents for safety reasons. So after watching the season it can be explained like this: Vault tec launched first those small bombs. Big enough to start a nuclear war but small enough that people can seek shelter in their vault before the big ones are dropping. the big ones then have so much radiation that it takes longer so become safe again. also civilisation has a lot of nuclear powered objects, that added to the total amount of radiation.

Big bombs don't have more radiation. If anything they have less as most of their energy comes from fusion not Fission. An example is the tsar bomba which was the largest device ever detonated with a yield of 50 megatons. Its energy came to 98% from fusion and it barely produced any fallout.
@beanis4206 ай бұрын
you gotta think about the fact that vault tech were incredibly corrupt so they would not be above playing up the bombs and getting all these people into the vaults as a easy excuse for their experiments and such, people were kept in vaults for years, it wouldnt exactly cause all the damage we see in the games but decay of building would most likely be quite high as well as survivors recycling buildings and the environment to try to survive, just a thought i had.

On top of that, Vault Tech and other companys had preaded a lot of missinformation around nuclear fussion and nukes in general. The part about the bombs radiation levels being nearly gone after a week might be true, but in the fallout world nearly everything is nuclear powered (think of all the cars, and nuclear waste you see in the world), so all the radiation could be from everything that was destroyed on the ground from the bombs, making it unsafe because of some sort of miniature nuclear meltdown of each and every nuclear powered object. Nuclear Winter would have led to food shortages, which would likely led to desperate and unsustainable farming methods that could have realistically depleted the lands ability to grow ANY form of plant life. Combine those with drought and/or high winds and the now arid land could turn into a Dust Bowl. If the cycle continues long enough... viola, man made desert. 3) The Radiation? He also thinks the bombs “fell” (which is how it’s said in the show) without any planes in the sky… The bombs were detonated from the ground, especially the first one given the plumage. The others were detonated shortly above buildings, or possibly even on the buildings. He’s also under the impression nukes give off radiation, which is not necessarily true. Some of the areas in universe were intentionally salted by nukes, but not all nukes do that. For example- your fatman in game does not dose you with rads in a wide area, and this is true to real life.

I don’t know how much of that can be “scienced”. A lot of art is subjective and there are soooo many different variables. The process, fan base, network, year of release, budget, so many different things are hard to compare.

@acgeewhiz6 ай бұрын
@@RobocopStealerOfFridges I see what you’re saying, but you’re still comparing very different things. Sonic and FNAF are each essentially an hour and a half long movies. But one has a budget five times the other one. Halo and Fallout are both TV shows with like seven hours per season, but one has a production company that spent twice as much per episode. Also, 343 actually was involved with producing the Halo show. Sonic was pre-Covid19, Halo was split by it, while FNAF and Fallout were filmed after the depths of the pandemic. All of them adapted or changed a pre-existing timeline so you can’t even point to that. And while we are just looking at those four, to get a real grasp and develop a theory that holds up, you would need to also analyze 50+ more theatrical releases and dozens of TV shows, spanning live action and animated, the 1980’s to present, etc. You can’t just say “The fans made this one and that’s why it worked, and the fans didn’t make this one and that’s why it flopped.” And how would you even “prove” who are fans or not? What if the director is a fan but isn’t given free rein by the studio? What if they’re not a fan, but the screenwriter was? Where do you draw the line?

I keep asking this, but to my understanding nuclear winter is what happens when the ashes is pushed into the upper stratosphere, where - outside of climate and winds - it just sort of hangs, dropping much, much slower, dimming the light while it's up there. So as soon it was pointed out how small the bombs are, and their clouds also not seeming as high reaching... Would that even happen? The amount of bombs and resulting fires would surely thicken the lower atmosphere with ash and sut, but those particles should drop relatively quickly. (Still devastating, though, in its own right.)

I have 2 problems with this theory 1. He didn't consider cobalt bombs (they haven't been built ever because they don't have any practical uses for war but are perfect as a doomsday device and we can assume some were developed if they wanted to end the war) Cobalt-60 has a half-life of 5.27 years so it would take like 100 years for the radiation to stop 2. Even if no cobalt bombs would be happening there wouldn't be people that would take care of the nuclear reactors and the bombs could destroy some places where nuclear waste is stored so the humanity would need to stay in bunkers much much longer

I think it’s also to take into account that some of the bombs being dropped were Chinese in origin. So the Vault Dweller’s survival guide could be talking about the American nukes, and the Chinese nukes could be made of a different material that made a smaller explosion but spreads more fallout particles.

Ok so I never post a comment but I love fallout and I can explain the low yield nukes seen all over the place in fallout. We have an idea that vault-TEC dropped the bombs to trigger the Great War and secure their vault experiments. We also know then that vaul-TEC had nukes in their arsenal. If you are vault-TEC would it not make sense to drop extremely low yield nukes in all the areas that were surrounding your vaults? Knowing that this would certainly be enough to trigger the larger nukes to evaporate everything else and leaving the areas they targeted much more habitable and thus conducive to resettlement by them? Loved the video let me know if this theory makes sense to anyone else!!!

In fact, Valt 101 from Fallout 4 was set to open and release their occupants about six months after, as stated in the terminals, but the surrounding area was in far worse shape than expected and, as a result, stayed closed. That's the reason everyone in there kinda killed each other.

I remember someone said the bombs were not meant for airburst but to hit as close to the ground as possible to get more Fallout. They were designed to explode and create as much radiation as possible, making the ground zero radiate longer. Scorched Earth was the word for it. You don't want the enemy country to be able to rebuild fast.
@IndigoSierra6 ай бұрын
Airburst creates more fallout. The radiation is tiny bits of uranium/plutonium that failed to atomize. If the warhead detonates close to the ground, more of these particles get buried in the dirt, causing very high radiation in a small area. In an airburst, more of these particles are carried up into the atmosphere by the mushroom cloud, and cause massive, widespread fallout.

@@IndigoSierradoesn't airburst cause the radiation to dissapear more quickly?
@IndigoSierra6 ай бұрын
@@juliandacosta6841 it disperses much further, affecting a larger area. Ground burst mostly stays heavily concentrated in the blast crater which is quite small. You would need tens of millions of warheads to create the level of fallout in fallout if you used ground burst.

However I think one fact we are not considering here is that if vault tec was the ones to drop the bombs it wouldn't of been surprising to learn the bombs that fell wasn't really that powerful. They wanted to wipe the factions out to make room for them. It would make sense for them to drop less powerful bombs in order to have a chance at taking the world over.
