To be fair, discovering a dead species is not the same as discovering a live one. For example, assume that T-Rex had not been discovered yet. The likelihood that it was alive would be astronomically low; it’s just too big for us to reasonably assume we’ve missed it walking around in the world. But the likelihood that we haven’t found the animal because it’s dead and buried is a waaaaaaay different thing.

You forgot that we only see the younger active crawlers that are near the surface and ever go out to hunt on the surface world. With thousands of miles of caves deeper than we saw there could be tribes of them in much higher number the deeper you go with different food sources including cannibalism.

It actually is just able to have symbiotic relationships with certain species harvester ants. This is highly unusual because ants tend to hate and murder any potential roommates, but the spiders live with them in some kind of mutualistic behavior. IDK why they're called ant worshipper though, they don't really do that.

Fun fact; there's a scene early on when the girls are in caves, but the crawlers aren't known yet, and you can see a figure in the background. That was a mistake and a infact it was just someone from the crew who accidentally went into frame, but the director left it in because a) it will give the viewer a bit more of a "oh crap. They're in danger" feeling before the characters. And 2) which is more of a theory; the viewer won't be as blindsided by the crawlers as normal. Which I love

I live in the Appalachian mountains and there are creepy and weird things around here. My grandma insisted for her entire life which was over 85 years that a creative known as a grave robber was around here. I also had an older cousin who found a weird human and animal like claw hand in a cave. The primary reason for blindness evolving is probably that when creatures can see it becomes their dominant sense. In a dark cave, creatures relying on eyesight would die faster than those who could see worse and were relying more on their hearing.

I live in middle Tennessee on top of a multi-state region that is filled with miles and miles of caves, I can attest that there are for sure tons of undiscovered cave networks here. It’s a story for another day but I saw what looked like eyes shining in the dark in Indian Grave Point cave years ago. I’ve never gone back in but in fairness plenty of people go in the main areas of that cave uneaten.

I found this movie years ago as part of my normal annual binge of horror movies during the Halloween season. When I saw the "crawlers", here's what went through my mind. Me: creepy bipedal creatures in caves.... blind.... and attack (possibly eat) anything that come near them.... IT"S THE GODDAMN FALMER!!!! A lot of this reminds me of stuff I learned in my ecology course. The Barton Springs Salamander had a really low population for a while (10-20) in Austin, Texas. I’m guessing the fact they’re still sustained, albeit not very well, is because they’re listed as endangered. I can’t imagine anyone listing the crawlers as endangered though xD I think even the most dedicated conservationists might pause at that one. Loved this episode!!

The thing of "40 year long generations" may be true for humans like me, but considering the state these guys would be in, those "40 year long generations" would be more like "10 years" at best. Humans haven't had the "40 years generation" thing for that long. Honestly, I am fairly certain 2k years ago, we still had 20 year generations. The process is still being studied, but there are established terminologies for animals that have adapted to subterranean ecosystems. Troglobites (also troglobiont) are fauna strongly bound to cave systems, whereas troglophiles are animals that act like the creatures in the Descent, which are capable of leaving the cave system but prefer to nest there for whatever reason. And just a small correction, the first movie showed animals that had been hunted by the Descent creatures outside of the cave, before the cast goes into the cave system.

This movie terrifies me. I came across this movie on tv and had no clue it was a horror film because it was in the middle of the movie. The second the main jump-scare happened (when the monsters were fully revealed)....I never had been so severely jump-scared in my life before. I have such a fear of jump-scares too this day.

One thing I noticed not mentioned is that yes individually your points are correct. The evolution changes to seeing and hearing. How they would get enough food to survive. However as you mentioned the loss of sight is caused by isolation and living entirely in caves. But if to survive they would have to frequently leave the cave then they aren't that isolated. Meaning they would evolve to the point were they have absolutely no sight. Even if they only went out at night at best they would have reduced vision but not necessarily lose all of it. Long story short your point individually are correct and fascinating but when put together they cross each other out. Still love this theory just noticed this wasn't mentioned.
