Fun Fact: In 2017, the people behind “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” actually teamed up with the people behind Cartoon Network’s “The Amazing World Of Gumball” to create an episode called “The Puppets” where Gumball and Darwin are trapped in a DHMIS style world.

I'm just throwing this in there but Duck is also the voice of reason in the series. For example in DHMIS 2 he questions the clock why they need to take a bath if they're already clean, as well as suggest that time is a concept of human perception. In 5, he questions the teacher's qualification for healthy foods and decides he has had enough of their BS. Each time he is silenced for pointing things out that don't make any sense to him. That may change with this new series but for the most part Duck is the voice of reason.

I also think each character represents an issue or way the media/corporations/adults treats demographics of age -yellow guy: young people are easy to milk and brainwash -red guy: the young adults get their messages and ideas stolen -duck: old people knowledge being seen as worthless or treating old people as expendable/stupid despite their experience
@elizabethlacy8869
@elizabethlacy8869 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with that. There's a certain left-leaning side that's always trying to stamp down reason in favor of passion, because relying solely on kneejerk emotion and not logic/thinking makes people easier to manipulate (such as perhaps the fear of a rampant virus *cough cough*) Regardless, in the original videos of this series, Duck was also the one who ended up getting torn apart and consumed because he wouldn't stop questioning what the "programs" were telling him. In other words, they got rid of him because he didn't agree; he got shut down for not cooperating. He could represent those people trying to get others to ask questions of their own and actually think for themselves rather than just absorbing what the media and "certain people" in authority are feeding them.

I think there’s more than that to Duck. In E:2 of DHMIS, Duck actually tries to explain a scientific theory, but is cut off by the clock. Afterwards he seems more compliant with the obviously inaccurate teachings of the guests. When E:5 happens, Duck keeps getting visions of the real world whenever he picks up the phone, the one that Redguy (the artist) is calling. As an adult, he is able to pick up on the metaphors being laid down, unlike Yellowguy, who represents a younger audience and cannot pick up on those metaphors. When he gets these messages, he is finally able to realize that the guests aren’t telling the truth. “Something’s… wrong-“ “That doesn’t make any sense-!” Once he’s had enough and tries to leave, he gets eaten by a food can (which probably represents a corporation of some kind), and is unable to stop it. He acted as a pawn for the companies sponsoring DHMIS, and once he had outlived his purpose, he was recycled into wrong food to feed to a younger audience so they would eat it up. It’s late and I probably didn’t communicate clearly what I was saying, but yeah.

Duck mislabeling the fly and butterfly as a bee is much more than a simple mislabel. Bees can cause harm, flies and butterflies are harmless. Flies signify death and butterflies are often a symbol of next paths or beginnings. So, when duck kills the butterfly and characterizes it as a bee, he is saying that he sees this as something dangerous, or that could cause injury, and kills it. This, in a way, justifies his killing. Essentially, duck killed an opportunity (butterfly) and a sign (fly) because he thought it was harmful.
@sneakers_guy5488
@sneakers_guy5488 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, that lines up pretty well with the assumption that duck is representing the older generation. What I mean is that his conservatism in wanting to keep things the way they were due to it working before and being tradition leads to him identifying any change as harmful, whether that be the opportunity (I think for love?) or the sign of something dying (mainstream centralized media dying?).

My thoughts on their roles is: Duck represents the older generation. Our grandfathers and grandmothers. Red Guy represents the adults. Yellow Guy would be the children... or a child like thought process. My reasoning behind it goes back to all the red guys in the past episodes all in the same room. A red guy is not just one person. It is a certain group of people even if one red guy may be a creative in the story. Wouldn't stand to reason there would be other ducks or yellow guys too to represent their groups of people?
@GRtogetaBIC
@GRtogetaBIC 2 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty good idea, just because 1 Red Guy (which is a simplification used to represent the adults) immagined his adventures with yellow guy and duck that doesn't make all of them immaginary beings. But I'm more of the opinion of Duck not being a demographic but simply a part of the creator's ego, the one ignoring or noticing the problems but unaware of the bigger picture like red guy. The reason is because Yellow guy and Red guy have similar names and are both human like, Duck has a very different name and physical appeareance.

I personally don't see this just being another message about the deterioration of TV shows. I believe this will more than likely comment on current media. News shows, newspapers and the such. Discussing how they themselves are often incredibly filled with adverts and opinions, and not the actual facts. For what Duck represents, I could honestly imagine that they show the idiocy of news shows, certain politicians, or just the consumers of the former two's words. Blaming the issue on something foreign, such as bees, when in actuality the problem isn't down to them, but flies. Symbols of gradual decay themselves. Flies themselves, are also natural beings. So I believe that the creators are saying how disaster is just a natural thing that will happen unless everyone bands together and stops it. And one final, somewhat unrelated note, DHMIS is airing on 4, or Channel 4, one of the first UK channels that makes money from advertisements besides ITV.

When yellow guy ate duck, I think he was replaced buy a new and "improved" duck by Roy. Making the new duck not recognize the bigger problem. Ignoring what the actual problem is, cause the first few episodes he was paying attention but was shut down, examples like, when the clock told him he needed a bath but he said he was already clean and didn't need one, and he questioned if the teacher knew what technically qualified as healthy foods. That's why I think Roy wanted to og duck gone cause he noticed that he was questioning what was really going instead of just believing anything he reads on the news paper just like an old person (suggesting he's of elderly age), on and made the steak teacher do surgery on his and made yellow guy eat him to put them both through misery. And now the new duck isn't questioning what's really going on just like Roy would've wanted.

I’m thinking instead of a politician, Duck is supposed to be a analog for “Legacy Media”. It makes more sense alongside what the other 2 characters are supposed to be. Duck calls the fly “a pesky bee” because he doesn’t realize that what he considers legitimate media is dying. Maybe that’s why Red guy calls him in episode 5 in the original show once he realizes that there’s a new and different way to produce media. Red Guy is trying one final time to explain to an older entertainer that times are changing. Before Duck can change his mind however, he is eaten/betrayed by the very kids he brainwashed with his outdated traditional media being represented by yellow guy.

Maybe the characters also represent the “main” generations at the moment. With Duck representing the Boomers and older generations who might struggle to see, or willingly turn a blind eye, to new ideas. Squashing down anything new be it good(the butterfly) or bad(the fly). Then suddenly getting vocal when something they know for a fact is misinformation(like in the nutrition episode). Then we have Red Guy representing the Millennials who might try to call attention to these new issues and their underlaying causes, but are constantly drowned out, resorting to more subtle ways of discussing these problems. Finally we have Yellow Guy representing GenZ and the younger generations having been exposed to so much information both corrupted and uncorrupted, are able to make their voices heard and might be able to get to the root of the problem.

I think Duck represents the parents, and that seeing how screwy the lessons were getting in that episode tipped him off and made him realize that things were wrong. Most adults tend to ignore an issue until it's too big to ignore, instead choosing to deal with the smaller symptoms instead of the bigger picture, mostly through ignorance(whether by choice or because they truly didn't know what was going on is dependant on the situation). So that's my theory on Ducks role. Red Guy is the creator, Roy is the sponsor, Yellow Guy is the children, and Duck is the parents/parental guardians.

Looking back on this and having seen the series, it seems Duck sometimes actually stops the problem and then other times ignores the problem. In episodes 1, 3, and 4 he actually STOP the problem. He undoes the damage done in Ep1, he is the first one who notices the family is off and possibly dangerous, and and in episode 4 he kills off Warren. But in the 5th and 6th episodes he ignores the problems around him. Yellow Guy also ignores the problems pretty often except for episodes 2 and 6. Red Guy is the most inconsistent outside of Episode 5 where he actually goes out of his way to escape with Duck and Yellow. Just thought that was interesting to point out.

While re-watching DHMIS with your interpretation in mind or actualy just in general, I think Duck is supposed to represent the Elderly, like Yellow Guy represents the youth. He dresses in rather old fashioned clothes, he´s expirienced in how the world works and recognises it if the show is teaching nonsense, but gets shut down by the show if he tries to call it out and in this trailer he reacts exactly how many elderly react to things like climat change, by falsly interpreting the symptoms and not recognising the problem as what it actualy is. He´s seeing the indicator of a mayor problem as nothing more than a "pesky" inconvinience.

How I interpret it: Duck: He is taking action against the most immediate problem, but isn't getting that there is a bigger problem associated with it. Yellow guy: He sees the problem, he knows that it could mean a bigger problem, but is either scared to do something or since he can't see were the bigger problem is (the fridge) he will look at anything that could be the problem. He then looks for things that are problems but are not the problem that fly was there for. Both Duck and Yellow guy represents both sides of internet discorse. Red Guy: Is the normal person. He is the person not online all the time. He sees the problem, can identify were the problem is, and even knows what to do about it. The thing is neither the Duck or Yellow guy are willing to listen to him, because they both have there own way of dealing with the bigger problem that is not really dealing with the real problem. That is why it seems Red Guy was kicked out of the town in the now removed trailer. He didn't follow either way of thinking, maybe even pointing out the flaws both Duck and Yellow Guys views. Then in turn both sides decided he was part of the problem and kicked him out. Pushing away normal people to cater to the group that they are leading.

Red Guy was a neutral party - and their refusal to acknowledge his viewpoint is akin to most people who are politically-invested: "You're either with or against us", without a gray area in between. Preemptively antagonizing and dehumanizing those who share different opinions to us without dissecting their perspective. It's an unfortunate flaw in the human psyche because we are too "evolutionarily lazy" to come up with reasons other than our own individual ones, so we brush aside and filter past all the "junk" that doesn't serve a purpose in reinforcing our own preconceived notions.

You could also think of the earlier Wakey Wakey trailer as to alluding toward the Red Scare, as he similar to McCarthy, creates a false tension within his community. Of course, this is in the abstract sense, but the idea of turning the villagers against one another is similar in concept to what McCarthy did back when there was a huge fear of Communism sweeping through the United States. Another potential connection from the opposite end would be how the Duck is a TV star, and how McCarthy targeted individuals in Hollywood.

One of the most recent UK themed versions is the current political correction that has been happening for quite a while. Police have been tasked to focus on hate speech, sometimes over pursuing violent crimes, with the Scotland Yard even Tweeting out that they're watching people's public discourse for hate speech. Turns out that pitting the public against each other is a great way to ignore problems that are actually causing damage to society, such as excessive pollution, immigrants that refuse to integrate, rising crime rates, failing economies, and global tensions getting hotter.

Two points. 1. Duck was one of the more observant characters in the original. He noticed the problems during the health episode and tried to ditch. Heck he's the one that points out their BS. 2. The lab leak theory is confirmed at this point so it's a weird thing to point to as paranoia on the Orangutan's part.

I think that duck could also represent the way that older generations can be so easily swayed. He was the voice of reason at one point and seemed reliable but as time went on the changes around him were confusing, and probably connects to the Sundance film where fears and misunderstandings get the best of him on a very intense scale. He’s comfortable reading his right wing newspaper but then the paper’s content might have shifted with ulterior motives instead of actually reporting news. Which is a very real problem a lot of people are having nowadays. The problem is some of these boomers are comfortable enough with the outlets they’re used to and are less likely to notice propaganda.

Here's another theory, could the Bird swatting the fly indicate at all be a reference to Socrates who talked about himself as being "the gadfly that annoys the horse and must be swatted". As in he's the fly that points out societies problems, and when they swat him they are prompted to act and make changes.

@@duishungry True enough. I just try to stay skeptic is all as references to philosophy can be and often are unintentional as philosophy especially ancient Greek philosophy also continued on into our present as it is the foundation of much of our thinking and culture in many of the worlds democratic societies. I mean there is a connection to what you say but is there any other connection directly pointing towards Socrates or his philosophy in the series before or after this? DHMIS has pointed at direct mostly current events more often than just views of things from far past philosophy but as Mat just stated the past namely history is in their theory likely involved so maybe this could be part of it. But philosophy is broad in application so it is by its nature designed to apply to life and or match up as it is describing behavior and understandings of humanity in various places and situations. I just call it a stretch because I see that current events and more direct interpretations seem more likely to be the influence for this rather than this one you mention so far. They tie together further sure but is there anything that puts the link to Socrates ahead of them just claiming that this is Duck due to their view of the world not recognizing the problem as has been implied? I do think you may have something in how specific it is to the actions of Duck and especially if the nature of the Fly turns out to be the result of a character or its own character in the future events. I still think it is cool however so maybe you do have something. Perhaps more clues to link this do exist and we both haven't found them or they haven't been released. So good catch but I am watching to see if it ties in further or if it is just a coincidence of the broad nature of philosophy.

Just a brief detail from the start of this video is the mattress sitting beside the tub in the ruined home. Holding a mattress over yourself in a bathtub is a recommended response for tornadoes. And from the end: Duck always wears a suit. When he finally speaks up about something being wrong, the system consumes him in a more literal way than anyone else. Also, from Episode 4, remember that while Red Guy learns about the internet's potential to him, as a creator, Duck is taken in by frivolity, and Yellow Guy, the impressionable one who seems to be the one change should come through, is looking at data. Just wanted to point those things out.

So I disagree about the bee. I don’t think it’s commentary about ignoring a problem. I think it’s commentary on gaslighting. Flies and butterflies are not harmful yet bees have the possibility of stinging you. By saying “pesky bee” I believe he is giving a reason for killing the harmless insect.

Another point for the fly being used, during the renaissance some of the Old Masters would paint and flies to show corruption on political leaders, as well as showing the representation of both death and sin. It’s also used to show the rotting or death of the soul.

What I really love about the DHMIS series is how the creators respond to fan theories - they said in an interview "they're all correct", which allows endless speculation as opposed to just confirming one theory and stopping it there. It ties in to what the whole series means to me personally, that being the importance of thinking for yourself and not letting anyone hinder your ideas.

It’s strange that Duck would be used to represent ignorance when he’s previously been depicted as smart and willing to speak out. He goes against the clock, saying, “What if time’s just a construct of human perception?” before being cut off by the clock screaming. In Episode 5 he realizes what’s happening and tries to get away or say something, but he’s silenced. He wasn’t ignorant or silent then. It’s strange that he’d suddenly be a symbol for ignorance. Maybe this is a defense mechanism to avoid problems with the media. Duck is refusing to acknowledge the problems right in front of him in order to protect himself and his friends. Yes, he did the same thing in Episode 3, but I just don’t believe his characterization would shift this much out of the blue. There’s a reason. Edit (December 2022): I love being completely and totally wrong.

If we are to continue to view DHMIS with a political lens, something I'd rather not do but it appears the creators do, then I'd view Duck as representing the silent majority in most political issues contrasting him nicely with Yellow guy representing the impressionable youth, and red guy being the ignored creators. Looking at Duck through out classic DHMIS; he, like Yellow Guy, is easily swayed by the instructor at first. Either going along with the lesson or not minding it. That said, its shown that while Yellow Guy is Naive and unknowing in a lot of things, Duck does have respectable knowledge and values. He reads political papers, he host picnic dinners, and he does question the teachers at times, but not to an intrusive or disruptive degree. It isn't until the status quo is changed and the lesson is something he KNOWS is wrong that he starts to resist. Politically speaking, the Silent Majority or the "ignorant majority" if you're less charitable in your description are people who aren't active in the political sphere. They don't avoid it per say, but rather fall into a routine and basically run on auto pilot as far as politics are concerned. Case and point, a large majority of these people only get their news from ONE source. Whether it be the local station, or a larger one, they rarely if ever go beyond their comfort-zone for anything outside their immediate situation is concerned. However when something happens to directly effect them, only then do they get active. But sadly by that point, the problem is often big enough that immediate action will not result in immediate relief. Nor is it a guarantee to succeed either. By the time Duck acts, its too late and he is unable to do anything meaningful before being removed from the table and discussion.

Maybe his behavior of ignoring problems was learned because of what he suffered for speaking out in the past. When it comes to discussing political matters and speaking up about what we think about what's going on in the world, I know that's a theme that has become true for many people. So many of us are afraid of how terribly we'll be condemned for speaking up about what we think is going on and what it means.

I think duck is a more broad character: an adult. The creators aren’t trying to point any fingers to specific people or specific political parties, they’re just trying capture the universal tendency for adults to stick with the group of people that represents them and the ideology embedded in it. Duck is just an adult refusing to listen to other opinions.

Duck also does call out when things dont make sense to him in a few different episodes. He isnt always ignoring the issues but he himself is also told to shush. I saw someone else say this but tbh I agree: this feels to be more of a commentary on how each level of knowledge from generations is disregarded. Old people (Duck in this case) have knowledge but are easily manipulated and swayed and their information is usually ignored due to age, and young people (Yellow guy) have the same problems except they are silenced by adults while older generations are usually hushed by younger people. And red guy shows the middle generations in which they kinda get shut down by both sides because older generations think they dont know enough and younger generations may not have fully grasped the issues yet. I think we will see all three characters, and therefore all three groups, needing to come together and listen to each other in order to fight the problem. Older people may fall for misinformation that the two other groups wont, and the same is for kids falling for misinformation the other two groups wont. By coming together you can spread the correct information to break apart the type of control media, specifically misinformed media, has over people.

i think an interesting note that supports this theory, is that you know that Duck is, well a duck. Same shape, colours and kind of voice you would hear from a duck. However Red Guy and Yellow Guy, are slightly more vague in looks. They're both vaguely more humanoid and are varying colours different to what we generally see. Being muppets makes this much easier to convey the difference between people in a kids show. Compare the big bads who have darker stylissation and their bright coloured counterparts. The fact that Red Guy is all red and Yellow guy is yellow and blue can represent the adult having found their path and youth being more impressionable.
