John Ford, ever the Civil War buff, or enthusiast, shows Grant taking a drink out of that bottle , but then holding a cup instead of a glass so you can’t see what’s in it. Detail, amazing detail as with Grant his drinking problem was the crux of the matter. I love this movie, as historically accurate as Ford could make it.

In fact, when busy Grant did not have a drinking problem.

Notice how Sherman eventually grabbed the bottle so as to get it out of Grant's reach.

The Horse Soldiers is a wonderful movie but if you want genuine history, read a book. There are two glaring inaccuracies just in this clip. Damage to Confederate rail & supplies was secondary to the mission of Benjamin Grierson, the actual leader of the raid. His main objective was to distract Confederate forces from Grant's crossing of the Mississippi to get behind Vickburg's defenses. The success of this effort was the key to Grant's eventual capture of Vickburg. Also there are several references in this clip & several more throughout the movie to the infamous Andersonville prison. The raid took place during April & May, 1863. Andersonville was not built until February, 1864.

Yes, I just finished "Grierson's Raid" by Dee Brown. The movie is not historically accurate, has been "Hollywood-upped", but does catch the spirit of the events in spring 1863. As the movie depicts, Grierson made extensive use of scouts, or as they were called "Butternut Guerillas", because they dressed in semi-Confederate uniforms. I smile when I see the movie because Duke imported a lot of his Ethan Edwards character from "The Searchers." I was 6 years old when I first saw the movie and did not like Wayne's bitter character. Duke redeemed himself a couple years later playing an amicable Davy Crocket in "The Alamo." Grierson was not a railroad section hand, but a music teacher who had a life-long fear of horses.

Anderson camp was not open in spring 1863 it was only built in 1864 it was not open that long if memory serves me right

You are correct. Sobering place to visit if you've ever been there, as I have. The camp was vacated as Sherman's forces captured Atlanta. Prisoners were shuffled to a variety of hastily-built prison sites, including Camp Lawton, just north of Millen, Ga., not all that far from where I live. Traces remain, now part of a state park, Magnolia Springs. Overcrowding continued to be major problem, though Lawton addressed some of these issues. It, too, though, was abandoned very soon after occupancy. As for the movie(1959), it was meant to tie-in with the upcoming centennial of the Civil War. I believe they tried to refer to several major names and personages, though not historically accurate. For example, Marlowe(in real-life Benjamin Grierson--Grierson's Raid), never met Grant. I believe the last-name "Brady"(Matthew Brady) is mentioned during the photo-taking session but Brady was never in that neck of the woods. And the charge of the cadets is based on a similar event at Battle of New Market--in Va., 1864. The movie takes liberties, sure, but they're fun nevertheless!

This Movie gives an Excellent History lesson as well as a Great Film with an Exceptional Cast throughout it's length. As some of the Other commenters have pointed out, the Film has Flaw's in it's Story, and the Accuracy of it is unfortunately Off. But that was one of the, Many problems with The Industries of TV, & Movie Entertainment at those times. To make thier Film's Brief, entertaining, & fairly 💸💸 good Draw for interested Crowd's. The Studios would use a very liberal Attitude with the Chosen projects, so as too make them More Desirable to the General Public's Viewpoint. Sadly Back in those days it was the Way things were and We had too Deal with it. But I'm a firm Believer that the Movies then? We're much Classier, & Better Overall than the One's of Today's WORLD. These are Only My POV and Thoughts or Opinions on the Subject, so be Kind nonjudgmental and May God Bless US All. 🤔✌️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✌️🤔.
