It’s a solid film, for sure, and Meryl Streep is a strong actress, but (my opinion only) she is overpraised. She is entertaining, certainly, but also very technical, always *trying exceptionally hard* … I always SEE her ACTING. From the beginning of her career. It’s rare that she escapes her own visibly try-hard technique and vanishes into a character, so that you don’t see the ACTRESS. One example where she did escape was ‘Bridges of Madison County’-she’s never been given enough credit for that stunning performance. Amazing. She was very good in this flick, as said, and I like her work across the board, almost (forget August, Osage County 😑), but I mostly see her acting as an engine in motion. Gillian Anderson (The Crown) was much better as Thatcher, even though Anderson played Thatcher with a curious, overly hoarse voice and bearing. But she vanished into the character. It was not mimicry, like Streep, it was a style choice, and it worked. Whatever the case, no one (including me) is ever going to deny that Meryl Streep is a beloved and talented entertainer. She is. But she ain’t no unicorn. She’s a strong drama school grad who was *very* well-publicized. From her generation before and a bit beyond, Dunaway, Burstyn, Spacek, Lange, Dench, Weaver, Close, Colman, Blanchett-all are more naturally gifted than she. My two cents. She’s grand, though. This portrayal was just not one that connected with me. Yeah, she won an Oscar for it, but Hilary Swank has two Best Actress statues and … I mean, come on.
@samwharton73134 жыл бұрын
So, where to begin. Meryl Streep the person is politically the polar opposite of Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher the person would never have revealed weakness or infirmity publicly. And yet the "The Iron Lady" is a masterpiece because it is wildly successful at revealing Thatcher as a fascinating, complex, flawed...but very real person. It is clear Streep approached portraying Thatcher from a place of compassion without judgement. I believe critics of the film dislike the film because they disliked Thatcher's politics. People criticize the casting of Streep because they dislike her politics. The bottom line is Streep delivered a virtuoso portrayal of an utterly fascinating powerhouse of a woman in a sweeping film which manages to feel unbelievably intimate. Phyllida Lloyd is a genius.

I'm normally very critical of many of these biopics but Meryl was brilliant in every way! No doubt about it. In the voice, the physicality, the psychology, the gestures, even the shape of her back, the walk and whiplashy head turns, the hand choreography (even her nails and pearls), the overarching kinaesthetics, the eye-mudras, the posture, and especially that brilliant mix of masculine and feminine tailoring and suiting.... it was all just very bewitching. The story and direction were superb. The way it flashed back and forth between MT's younger days and her senility in old age and how really the whole saga was unfolding in her own mind. It drew us completely inward to what can only be described as an intensely spiritual journey. Meryl's strength as an actress has always been primarily to be able to master voice, and vocalisation is one of the key engines of stagecraft. She can move from very subtle to very strong and inbetween. Her husky, biting, nannying, firm and precise pitch as Margaret Thatcher was a masterclass in Vocal acting. Bravo Meryl and Bravo to Phyllida Lloyd, the Director. This was a beautiful collaboration.

I have a feeling Margaret Thatcher wouldn't like this film because it highlights her as a woman in power that overcame obstacles, not as a person that overcame obstacles. Margaret Thatcher was always quick to put down any notion that femininity played in her career. She wasn't the most influential "woman" leader that Britain has seen in the 20th century. She was the most influential leader in 20th century Britain. Unfortunately, the film is soaking wet with feminism, advocated by those in Hollywood and today's political landscape. Margaret Thatcher would probably roll in her grave based on that alone.

I'm a U.S. Citizen so I confess to not having paid as much attention to British politics as I maybe should have but I suspect, there as here, there are two kinds of politicians. One kind do what "feels good" or what they think will persuade the majority of their constituents that the politician is doing something to help the constituents personally. The other kind do what they think is right because they think it is right. That second type remind me of JFK "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." P.S. Meryl Streep has more talent in her little finger than most actors have altogether.

The reason why this movie was such a missed opportunity was how inherently sexist it was in it's characterization of Thatcher. They spent far too much time on her declining mental state in her retirement, pining for her deceased husband, and on her youthful school days relating to her future husband. The trailers make it look like the focus of the story would be her time as PM, but really they barely glossed over 11 years in 15 minutes. Love her or hate the real women, this movie was terrible. This would never be done with a male counterpart. No one would make a movie based on Regan, only to focus 3/4 of the movie on his alzheimer's. Nothing against Meryl herself, but this just reeks of sexism from beginning to end. They might as well slap the audience over the face with a towel that says "see what happens when you let a women run the show? See how utterly miserable she becomes?" This is what happens when we constantly tell women's stories through the eyes of men.

Meryl Streep is such an amazing actress. Blown away, especially considering she’s American but she nails it. A shame that the movie obsessed about her cognitive decline and that spoilt it.

Abomination? And yet America is teeming with british actors...
@rugbydazz22644 жыл бұрын
@@bibbiana4Lyfe You obviously missed my point Hollywood maybe teeming with British actors but they don't land roles as The President of the United States in blockbuster movies, it was a compliment to say that Meryl Streep portrayed Margaret Thatcher better than any British actress could have. Get ya head out ya ass and read what is being posted.
@caomhan844 жыл бұрын
@@rugbydazz2264 British actors have played many American presidents. Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Nixon, LBJ...and that's just off the top of my head. Ben Franklin wasn't a president, but a Brit has played him too. There's probably more. Usually, we don't complain. But every time an American is mentioned as playing a British politician, Brits are absolutely apoplectic, as if it's anathema. Luckily Meryl Streep and John Lithgow shut the noise up immediately...because it's silly. Nationality shouldn't be a bar to entry when it comes to playing a role of an iconic person of state, as long as you speak the language. All you need is a good actor to do it.

I don't fault Meryl Streep but you really have to have lived through those times to get the complete picture. I also didn't like the way that the UK was portrayed as some kind of dilapidated slum, presumably to satisfy the American audience.

1970s Britain was pretty rough from what I'm told.
@thomaskilroy45734 жыл бұрын
Trust me. 70s Britain was EXACTLY how they portrayed it in the film. The only inaccuracy is the director’s moronic comment about the 50-50 split between those who Love/Hate her. The only ones who Love her are a very small percentage of deaf/dumb Upper Middle Class Arsewipes with problems getting Erections. The rest of us view her as the Antichrist

1970´s U.K.dreadful & was the product of successive Labour governments. Harold Wilson got out just in time before the money ran out. It´s all very well wanting to support this, that & the other but you can´t do it without money & I don´t think that the majority of the people, at the time, understood this. Let´s remind ourselves of the Three Day Week, the constant power cuts, of the far left, represented by the likes of Arthur Scargill & Mr.Kinock

, Michael Foot & Jim Callaghan all at the mercy of the Unions who were not elected by the nation, the Unions that is, & holding everyone to ransom. It was a terrible time. Who stood up to them! One person alone, Mrs.Thatcher, who was vilified in the press & T.V. but she managed to turn the country around & pay off the national debt that had stood since W.W.2! No one is perfect but let´s give praise where praise is due. Another thing that Mrs.Thatcher did was to free the country from the Rhodesia problem.
@stevebbuk4 жыл бұрын
@@chrishoo2 I agree with most of these new comments. Sir Edward Heath was treated shamefully by the unions and any hope of national consensus fell by the wayside. Britain had to wake up from its stupor and earn a living, and though mistakes were made I doubt anyone but Margaret Thatcher could have turned this country around.
