Thank you for this interesting review. A small note: the double-casting of Amy in 1994 is the exception; in the 1933 version, Joan Bennett (who was pregnant, FYI) plays Amy young and mature; in the 1949 version, Elizabeth Taylor plays Amy young and mature ... and also, in order for Margaret O'Brien to play Beth, the screenplay switched the sisters so that Beth is the younger sister in this version.

I was on the edge with this one just because I think the PBS mini series did a really good job and hit on a lot of the points that seem to pop up in this version. It almost felt too soon to get another version even though cinema and TV are fairly different.

I'm glad the Oscars saw sense with its multiple nominations, but very annoyed that Gerwig missed out for Best Director to four all-male movies (+ Bong Joon Ho). Little Women is still in cinemas and everyone should go and see it.

The modern time version does not work. It works better when it is a period piece.

It is a period piece in the 2019 version as well, merely adapted to include the original writer's biography into the narrative (the original author wrote the book as a contempory novel in her time, so the source material has become a period piece only with hindsight from our point in time anyway).
