The title was a reference to the fact that the protagonist ended up becoming the boogeyman to the vampires, which had become the new "normal". He was literally the monster that came to kill them while they slept. The theatrical ending robbed us of that twist in point of view.

@@Dominus_Augustus the 1964 "Last man on Earth" is very faithful to the original book, it takes some liberties such as making Robert a scientist, and having him cure Ruth. And he is hunted down and slaughtered in the night instead of captured. It's black and white and has the goofiness of a movie from the 1960s, but you can literally see scenes and remember the words on the page of the book describing exactly what happens on screen. It is now public domain and can be watched full length (1 hour 30 mins) on KZbin

He is a legend, but not in the sense that he believed to be (or that the audience believes through the movie). He is an evil legend, the legendary "boogie" that kidnaps the vampires when they sleep, that can walk in the sun, and that have "magic" weapons that can beat anything. He is a legend in the perspective of the vampires! Of course Neville isn't aware of it. He thinks he's saving them, by giving them the cure (even if he killed most of his "patients"). But the vampires neither understand the cure, nor want it: they just want to be left alone. And that's the whole point of the original story: how one can make so many evil things even if they believe they're doing good, just because of sheer ignorance.

Juan Francisco Gonzalez Garza Vampirism wouldn't be so bad, if it was like Bram Stoker's Dracula style of vampirism. If you were well-fed (yes, with blood) you'd still be able to walk around in the sunlight, but you'd only have access to your mental powers during the day. Going for too long without feeding would cause you to weaken and age, thereby making you weak to the sun, but that's easy to fix. Even the "vampires" in I Am Legend would be cool to be. Constant adrenaline is like a Level 1 superpower or something.

Like seriously, they wanna execute him for massacuring their kind, but not once did they ever decide to flat out tell him the truth and then give him the choice to either stop or be executed, plus he could've also explained his reasons, the vampires drove humanity to near extinction which is just a bit worse than what he's been doing

There are two types of vampires in the book I am Legend. There are those who have died, and are more mindless though they do taunt Neville outside his house. And "the still living." Those infected, but who are alive. They eventually band together, and find a solution to the worse parts of their affliction. Neville goes around while they sleep during the day and executes them while they sleep. He hides in his home. Talking to him isn't possible because of this. It's why when he lay dying he looks at them with the fear in their faces. That they see him as vampires of old. A monster from a dead race (humans) who preyed on them while they slept. And as he dies Neville realizes that he will become a tale to scare their children. That he will be the monster in the light, the hunter. That he is legend. That is the whole point of the story. I recommend the graphic novel. It's REALLY good. With the images of the giant fire pit the dead are burned in and the last panel with him dying and the statement "I am Legend." I know 3 weeks late.
@mismismism7 жыл бұрын
I don't really like the sympathetic endings in either, it doesn't really make sense. We're supposed to feel that he's monstrous for hunting them but that doesn't work cuz the reason he's killing them is cuz they literally hunted and killed/infected everyone. It's like saying someone who kills a gang of serial killers is just as bad as them because the gang loves each other.

And? That doesn't change the logic. He's not attacking random innocent people, they're infected with a virus that turns them into blood thirsty creatures. By that logic anyone in a zombie movie or infection movie like Rec or 28 Days Later is evil for killing the infected. That doesn't make sense, he's not monstrous at all in this context, them choosing to get the virus or not, would make no difference, they literally turned into violent creatures that took down all of civilization.

scalpingsnake CGI is an excellent tool when it is carefully crafted and applied by the right hands. Take a look at the progress of CGI over the years in films such as Dawn of the planet of the apes or Jungle, which required extensive CGI and received so much praise for it. I understand I Am Legend is different and not so well done when it was made and released back in 2007. CGI wasn't so great as it is now.
@weegar7 жыл бұрын
Could have been many reasons why they opted to use cgi over using an actor the most likely reason was probably that they felt there had to be consistency between the male and the female or it could have been as simple as that they didn't want to have an actress lay on ice for extended periods of time. if they had someone to do play her they would need to have breaks to let her warm up or there could have been something that she would have done in the background that broke the scene and she would have to be breathing rapidly when ever she was in view. In all it could have just been more expensive than just rendering a 3d model and animating thst

@@SirDankleberry literally the only thing that separates humans from animals is the realization of "self". The ability to look into a mirror and recognize its not another person, but instead just a reflection. To think in an introspective way. This ability that usually developes after you turn 4 or 5 is what makes us "human". Other aspects of human physiology and technology and sociology animals replicate and perform to standards that meet and sometimes even exceed our own. They use tools, have the same pheremones and endorphins that denote love and hate and passion, can communicate with each other, have laws and punishments for "evil doers", can solve puzzles (that some average humans cant), literally do brain surgery, and even build societies based around farms and agriculture and even livestock. You have a bad case of anthropocentrism, or human bias, where you think humans are better than other species or are the center of universe. Dont worry, its common among the less informed.

They don't use a syrum to hold back their weaknesses.... They actually mutate. So there is the vampire like creatures. But also a new species that evolves to be able to walk in the day and have more intelligence. But both species in the book are nothing like in the movie. They are closer to a vampire like Dracula. Before the video explains how the monsters viewed the humans, I had already thought of that concept as the video was going on. I realized that, well, if most people die and 9% become infected as monsters and the remaining 1% are left to fend for survival, it looks like the new "norm" is to be a monster. It's like if you didn't already die, would you want to be a part of the majority which would be the infected people who became "monsters", or would you prefer to be apart of the minority 1% who remain immune to the virus but live in fear over what has become of the world? It makes you ponder what it means to be "normal."

I like that the final cut ending has a positive outlook on a very negative situation. However, the book's story as described here had a poignant look at how our reaction to a crisis can destroy our humanity. Think about all the zombie movies or games you have seen. We quickly get behind characters blasting everyone in sight. What if these people could be cured ? What if you are the zombie and you don't realize it ? But it is somehow satisfying to kill. It's in our instinct.
