Born in Indonesia and raised in Singapore, Margaret Kerrison received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Her career spans television, film, digital media, games, brand storytelling, location-based entertainment, and immersive experiences. She has worked as a Story Lead, Story Consultant, and Writer for multiple projects around the world, including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Star Wars: Launch Bay, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, Avengers Campus, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, National Geographic HQ, and the NASA Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex’s Journey to Mars: Explorers Wanted. She was the writer for five projects that won Themed Entertainment Association (THEA) Awards. She has appeared in the Disney+ series Behind the Attraction, the Freeform television special Star Wars: Galaxy‘s Edge - Adventure Awaits, and the online educational program Imagineering in a Box. She was a Disney Imagineer from 2014-2021. She is currently a Sr. Experiential Creative Lead at Airbnb. Immersive Storytelling for Real and Imagined Worlds - A Writer’s Guide is her first book.

S.T.O.R.Y. being the acronym for: Story, Theme, One, Reflect, and Yearn. These aspects are good to have as a toolset if you are capable of making the most of it. While I don't take too much issue with the premise of these things, the One aspect in one of a kind, may not be fully understood. Sure having a unique story will make you just that, unique. But the thing you want to seek out is making it stand on its own as one of its kind. There are countless unique or interesting stories out there that you can draw from, be it history, your personal life or someone else's that you can reference in making something new.

I think the point is that every story has been told; there's nothing original anymore. So, the idea is to ask, "How can I take something not original and put my own spin on it to make it appear original?"

I would substitute "one of a kind" for "original". It gets the same point across, and it's simpler. How do you take something perhaps familiar and really make it your own? Originally doesn't necessarily mean you don't need influences, I think it is taking a thought, an idea, and expanding on it in your own unique way.

@@andmicbro1 {and Scott E. if I'm honest} I think I'd substitute the "One of a Kind" for "OWN" as in OWN the TELLING of the story, whether it's your particular blend of a cast of Characters, a personal evolution of vocabulary, whether through a weird jargon you can teach the audience so they work a little bit for their story satisfaction... OR you take an otherwise tired, melodramatic refrain and switch up the same story into a new genre of telling it without straying "too far"... The story, itself, isn't going to be original. It's one of the same short list of plots and character arcs we've already seen over the last... about a century of story telling. It's the style of telling the thing that makes YOU your own brand and kind of storytelling magician... a master of YOUR medium, whether that medium is a computer rendering 3D graphics frame by frame, a tablet on which you hand draw everything frame by frame and then batch-process through software... OR a Camera collection and a bunch of like-minded people who swap out rolls between cast and crew to bring the thing alive in some abandoned build or a warehouse you can just about rent, or just any other location where you can ply the trade and tricks... and "fix it all in post"... ...OR even if you find your place at a Table surrounded by friends or strangers and covered in books, papers, and dice... Giving a uniquely chaotic blend to the same old tales of heroes and magical creatures bringing them quests to save the world or just themselves... Step up... and OWN that story. Do it YOUR OWN WAY... and you'll have a piece of craft like nobody else could ever do. It will be unique enough, but YOU have to have the courage and faith to really put your energy in UNASHAMED and make it your OWN. Maybe I didn't get that part of the vid'... BUT it's my take on what she was trying to get at. ;o)

This is really interesting. I want to stick some of my thoughts of storytellers to the acros: S - Miike, Kaufman, Angelou - it’s out there but I gotta put it out there from here, it’s gotta be shared, people need to see it T - All the mythologies, Shakespeare, Lucas, Kurosawa - who do you want to be today, who do you want to be O - Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet - maybe the most original take of a piece while still heavily word for word with the original R - Ford, Hitchcock, Burton - big tie in with the O, having a vision of something that doesn’t exist and bringing it to life Y - everyone that ever had a dope dream and told it to as many people as possible - and that’s hella more than just storytelling Guillermo del Toro - couldn’t find the exact quote but he says that every story has been told and every song has been sung but none of them with your voice. So don’t you give af about what anyone says and you get out there and you tell your g’damn stories!!! 🍻🍻🍻 ❤️❤️❤️

I really liked Y; yearn. I think that's something missing from a lot of franchises that have a long history. There was something magical in the first iteration of that franchise that hit a chord with the audience. But then subsequent iterations are accused of missing the point of the original, or feeling "soulless". I think that's because somewhere along the line they forgot that these stories are really not for the artist telling "their" story. It's about what story deeply resonates with the people around you. Maybe it's wish fulfillment, fantasy, but maybe it's also a story that tells us something deep and powerful, it speaks to the soul about the human experience.

I love Film Courage and almost every one of their videos feels important when I see it, but this one CHANGED MY LIFE. I've never thought of story telling this way before. Especially the one about why are YOU the best one to tell the story. Lots of times you might not enter from a place of personal experience or a truly original feeling idea that's yours. You just thought, "Wow - wouldn't it be cool if the Dickensian (TV show) idea was tried on Shakespeare? But in a Steampunk British Empire & Europe? OH and can't forget the pirates! Also a TV show - too many stories otherwise. And we had one through-line that was the main story that meandered us through all the others on the path to finding - whatever Shakespeare's work has in common?" (idk cause I'm just spitballing here.) Sometimes we come to an idea just because it sounds fun and cool. Not personally meaningful and certainly not "our own" in a pure sense. Her question made me realize that it would be good in even those cases to admit there might be a 100 people - if the were excited about it - who could tell that story. Some might be great - even greater than I could do. SO - sit with it. Find something in all that - - that is yours. MAKE it a story only you could tell that way and so well in that way. I don't know. It felt mind blowing to me LOL.
