What are reasons to make a short over making a feature?

Biggest for me is time. But budget and cast comes in also. It’s easier to write 5 to 10 pages than 120. Rewrites are much easier. Shorts often have a smaller cast and scope and it’s much easier to realize and actually film. More than anything it makes you use your imagination in ways you don’t need to with a feature. You can. Work a year on one script or write several in a year. Learning much more about the whole process.

It’s a calling card. From my experience, having a produced short is better than just having a feature script. People are seeing your writing rather than just reading it. Also it takes less time to watch a short film than read a feature script.

Number 1 reason is that... One can show to people that one can direct a film..., Number 2 reason.....specially for 1st time directors it become more important because by making short they can get some confidence on their own skills. Now comes other underlying issue .. Biggest one is huge Budget crunch .. But here short can be made out of zero budget as well, by teaming up with like minded friends infect team of 1 or 2 people & 1 page screen play is more then enough to start your 1st short...

Short enables to translate several ideas that come to our mind in to film and thus many themes separately can be told to public as a message and even create a social impact unlike features which criss-cross many themes in a film Short films provide an opportunity to harness the skills of film development Short films, if well executed can bring fame and name in closed circles and earn quick reputation Short films involve less crew, low budget, and can be taken in desired locations.
