When Jack Webb died, the City of Los Angeles gave him a Cop funeral. The badge number 714 was retired. Police Officers from all over the US came to pay homage. When "Dragnet" first came on the radio, there were no other police dramas anywhere that actually showed cops as smart, decent hardworking people.

It's funny that they talk about salt tablets when it's hot. My friend has worked on a horse ranch in South Florida for 25 years. During the summer they all take salt and potassium tablets to keep those headaches away. It really works. The sun is brutal in Florida.

In real life "Thomas" was likely Autistic. Being institutionalized and declaired incompetant was common for Autistics at that time. Now, he would have been released to his Dad and not gone to a psychiatric hospital. Since I am autistic this story made cry because of the way Smith and Friday handled him. They caught on immediately that there was a problem with his story and didn't believe him. It is sad that he was institutionalized because he should not have been.

There is something to using salt to stop tinnitus [ear ringing]. It can be caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. Salt caused BP to rise. Tinnitus reduced. It can go the other way, too. I use Tylenol. It helps.

That's not unusual for the time. The floors of the whole country were practically all giant ashtrays. People would smoke in supermarkets and put their butts out on the floor and every once in a while a kid would come around with an aisle-wide mop and collect them all. People would flick their finished cigarettes everywhere. Maybe you're not old enough to remember.

You may not know it but it is illegal in some states, may be every state, to smoke in a car if there are kids riding along, but that one isn't enforced.
