Great lead performances from Monty Clift and Robert Ryan. And Maureen Stapleton certainly deserved her Oscar. Why Clift is not recognized alongside Brando, Day-Lewis, Olivier and DeNiro is behind me. Every single one of his performances is remarkable. The script here is excellent, very clever, and the writers deserve more accolades. I mean, can you imagine a script like that today, when most filmmakers believe their audiences to be idiots? Thanks for making this film available!

One of the great mysteries --why Montgomery Clift is no longer a household name when it comes to classic actors. There are several theories but the point remains that he is arguably the greatest actor America has ever produced. All of the great male actors you mention above have pointed to Clift as a rare and exceptional talent. Perhaps his films were not shown often enough on television for his name to stay in the forefront of the public mind? It almost feels like a cosmic conspiracy against him... I mean even his iconic performance in "Eternity" became overshadowed by Burt Lancaster & Deborah Kerr rollling around on the beach. He never won an Oscar, which is patently ridiculous and a huge black mark on the Academy.

The actors in this period of film history placed a lot of their own character and personality into each of the parts they played. People had much more character and were acutely aware of moral standards. Today's actors can't even come close to these performances.

Great picture for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Cast of superb star actors---Cliff, the elegant Miss Loy in a real dramatic role far removed from her 30s glamour days and that stinker Rob Ryan, one of my favourite Film Noir actors. The interesting thing is that so many of them were Sympathetic, Civil Rights - Humanitarian activists in Real Life. And dont forget Dolores Hart who gave it all up to become a Nun. The film is loose remake of Advice to the Lovelorn (1933) with Lee Tracey.

This is one of those movies with a cast that is far superior to the script, which turns Nathaniel West's novel, a dark comedy, into a melodrama of redemption more acceptable to the movie-going public. The script ignores nearly all of the book's heavy-handed religious aspects and converts the plot into parallel explorations of adultery and forgiveness, which is light on logic and heavy on emotion (especially cynicism) that makes the film difficult to watch. (Leonard Maltin's guide gives it 2.5 stars.) Even so, the film, like the novel, is a classic because of what it attempts to do and because the cast is superb. While the actors can't save the film from its structural and artistic flaws, this is nonetheless one of Montgomery Clift's best performances. Dolores Hart (three years before she became a star in "Where the Boys Are") is simply magnificent in her ability to portray nuances of character, unusual in an actress so young. Myrna Loy is far more versatile in this movie than in the pedestrian roles she was usually given. While Robert Ryan has the thankless task of being the nasty indispensable character, a cynical editor and abusive husband, around which the plot revolves. All in all, the movie is haunting, but absurd, like most Hollywood melodramas -- but the first-rate acting is well worth the price of admission.
@edeltraudbirmingham43312 ай бұрын
Very astute and articulate summary. The cast themselves felt the same way about the script... Maureen Stapleton called Monty Clift and told him she was disappointed in the script and Monty replied, "Well, I'm getting used to being disappointed." :( I'll bet he was! But as you said, despite the script they were given, this cast did a superb job of bringing it to life and creating relatable, moving characters.

There were some things in the movie that were hard to accept. For example, I was disappointed when Clift’s character slept with Doyle’s and don’t see what his motivation could be. I could see a kiss out of sympathy but to sleep with her when he has this sweet and beautiful gal by his side? Also, the women were too forgiving. Maybe it was just the signs of the times. But I’d hope no woman would endure years of emotional abuse on the chance her husband would forgive her a one time transgression from years ago. And Hart’s pain was just kind of brushed under the carpet. I mean she even said she feels the need to apologize? The movie held my attention and ultimately there was a happy ending because of 2 very forgiving women but there definitely cringey moments for me.
