Couldn't agree more. I absolutely love all the other characters as well. Sakura's brother Touya for instance, seemingly looking like the typical mean older brother archetype but being revealed to be way, way deeper, constantly putting himself in the line of danger for Sakura's sake, as his boyfriend does the same as well~

Her most powerful spell proves what you just said: 絶対だいじょうぶだよ Also, that Mei Lin scene you mentioned is one of the reasons I think she and Tomoyo are the characters we see the biggest growth in the series and the more mature. Tomoyo goes from not only loving Sakura but, different than her mother, Sonomi, with Sakura's mother, Nadeshiko, she wasn't possessive, she wanted Sakura to be free and happy like a true love should feel like. To the point Tomoyo sees everything around Sakura even when Sakura herself doesn't. She realizes that Syaoran likes Sakura before even Syaoran did. She realizes when he is going to break Mei Lin's heart and she offers a place for Mei Lin to go and cry. She is there for EVERYONE around her. In the new arc, on the manga, Sakura has a veeeery adorable moment with Tomoyo telling her that she is her magician, cuz Tomoyo is a bit down talking to her about not being able to aid much and Sakura says that she never failed because she couldn't when she saw the effort Tomoyo would put into a new outfit, filming and everything she always did to help in the way she could (with her credit card. Jk) What also strikes me in that Mei Lin scene is when she says: And I wanted to be able to hate her, but how can I hate Sakura? She is such a loving girl. She recognizes that would be easier to hate Sakura and she really wishes she could, but she adores her just as much, she can't bring herself into doing that just to feel better herself. I seriously learned A LOT about feelings by watching, rewatching, and imprinting every bit of CCS in myself - over and over and over again at least once per year. This show deserves it.

Is that why she keeps saying "It's definitely OK?" They kept referring to it as a powerful spell, but they never used it so I didn't quite understand it. I think this write up of CCS is more beautiful than mine and I hope more people see it. Thank you!

@@FilmFlux “Living things are restrained by Chains: The laws of nature, the flow of time, the vessel known as your “body”, and the existence called your mind. That scene when Mei Lin is crying in Tomoyo's lap breaks my heart everytime, that feeling of losing a love one is so sad, and it's so beautifullly captured in that scene. Also, I think that the losing that feeling for the one you love is not only a very creative and new way to create a catastrophe for the characters to fight for, instead of the destruction of the world or something like that, something that we have seen in a lot of other tv show, also is a very sad and terrible consequence for not be able to defeat Yue, is great, And of course the amazing protrait of LGBTQ + characters. CCS was the second anime series beside Sailor moon I watched which was about magic and so on. Usually I don't watch these kind of series because mostly I don't like the MCs who are cheerful and happy (yeah I don't know why). So when I started CCS I already had in mind I'm not gonna like Sakura, but boy was I wrong. Sakura was so cute and kind and I started loving her. In general, I didn't expect the series being with so many emotions. How can a series for kids be so powerful? I'm really glad you were able to speak kinda my mind out in your video hahaha thank you.
@FilmFlux4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. I was thinking about the same thing while making this video, but I don't know if I ever wrote it down. I think part of the reason that Cardcaptor Sakura (a series for kids) is so powerful is because it's distinctly made about kids. It's a kids world and their emotions are just as real. In fact, their emotions are a little more raw because they aren't tempered by experience or an understanding of the world. And I think Cardcaptor Sakura did a really good job of tapping into that.

One of the big themes in the series is "forbidden love". Yuki + Toya Kaho + Toya Sakura + Tomoyo Li + Mei leen Rika + Terada And many others. The show was going for the narrative of "any form of love is always acceptable". Presenting that message to kids in this heartwarming anime is wonderful. Even relationships that seem ikky at first (like Terada and Rika) pass because love isn't presented as something sexual, and kids don't view love this way. Kids often say they would like to marry their parent or a person they care for because they don't experience sexual attraction. So even those gray areas presented in the series pass with the context of children trying to figure out their feelings, just like we all did at that age. The fact that these relationships were largely censored in the western adaptation is insane. It's like they took the central message of the series and deemed it too much for kids to handle, when that was exactly what CCS tried to do. I mean, at that point, just don't air it.

I’m sorry but putting Kaho and Touya in the same category as the rest (and as far as the anime goes) is just wrong. This anime really is the best one ive seen so far. The way the anime goes is just so heartwarming. Its not really focused about the magic. Its also about the surroundings of sakura. Her patient and kind father, a brother who cares about his sister, and of course her loving friends. Its also about the way she cares about her friends. This is the kind of anime I find really sincere and innocent. And I envy sakura for being kind and has all the support and love she gets! This anime is really for all ages. The other part that you touched on was how when, at the climax of season one, if Sakura fails the test then all connected to the Cards will lose their love for one another. If you read or watched this for the first time, you might think that this world would be one of chaos and malice. That, since everyone would lose their love for one another, their hearts would be full of hate for one another. But that’s not the case. Everyone is indifferent to one another. Sakura’s mother’s picture is not on the table not because they hate her, but because they literally don’t care one way or another. Yukito is not there to walk with Sakura because he hates her, but because he doesn’t care. Their hearts are not filled with hate, they are devoid of everything. That’s why Mei-Ling can’t bring herself to hate Syaroan or Sakura. She cares so much about them that even when she learns that Syaroan will never care for her in the same way, they both still do care deeply for each other. Same with Tomoyo and Sakura. This is also what makes Yue so scary, and so tragic in the beginning. He says that he is “not as sentimental as Keroberos”. He literally could not care one way or another if Sakura fails or passes the test. This gives more weight to how love is. You must care with love, and you must care deeply and truly.

@@FilmFlux Something between fantasy and scifi. Historial elements, fights of honor, battle auras, magical girls, horror, romance, social statuses (purebloods and hybrids), prejudices, politics and other problems and lots of other things mixed in. The story takes place in a distant future where humanity is no more but traces of it still remains in cultures and religions as the current Earth is inhabitated by different kind of human-like species of animals (mostly) such as werewolves, kitsunes, dragons, unicorns etc. The world has its own gods and goddesses called the Guardians who have abandoned the world or so many believe. The Earth is devided into 18 kingdoms of air directions (two of which I have created myself) and each of them have their own sacred beast (15 of them I have created myself) and shrine maiden who uses the power of the said sacred beast. Of course the Earth is not the only planet with a life in it so there are organisations of which maintain the peace among different planets and destroying the zombie creatures while working under the Imperial family. The said Imperial family has lots of power as well as lots of enemies and therefore many organisations under their control will eliminate the said threat before it becomes too great. Belonging to one of these organisations is consired to be the greatest honor. I could tell more, but I like the element of surprise 😊

This really hammers why I've always enjoyed Cardcaptors soo much. I remember being introduced to the butchered Nelvana dub as a kid and just seeing it as a run-of-the-mill action show. But, soon after, it started airing on my local Hispanic cartoon channel, where that version kept the original episodes and storyline intact and I was just enamored with it. I couldn't quite explain why, but I found the overall atmosphere and tone of the show soo damn relaxing and I was invested in the story despite it not having much action or world-ending stakes. They even aired the second movie that finished the story of the anime in Spanish as well, and I was crying just seeing it end like that before we got to see Sakura and Syaoran embrace. Never did I feel insecure or ashamed for being a young 10-year-old kid who was usually into Power Rangers and Superheroe stuff just gushing and loving this magical girl anime. You wouldn't catch me dead watching Sailor Moon, but this? I always made the exception. It just goes to show how the deep themes and its overall simplicity transcend age and gender. It's like a good Ghibli film; simple and accessible on the surface, but deep when you start to peel off the layers of what it actually means. And don't even get me started with the Spanish dub man. Christina Hernandez brought Sakura to life to a lot of people in Latinoamerica. It's the best performance of her career and one that defined who Sakura is to a lot of people for decades. I even got emotional hearing her do her Sakura voice for the Spanish dub of Kiki's Delivery Service. It was like reliving the same magical feeling watching Cardcaptors all over again, but in another beautiful story I love.

@mistingwolf4 жыл бұрын
@@FilmFlux Pretty much any episode where Syaoran showed any interest in Yukito was completely cut. The only ones I recall where they didn't or couldn't cut were the episodes where they first meet, and the episode with the Fiery card. There were some scenes where I remember thinking, "Oh, I don't remember this part,." Such as the whole conundrum with the teddy bear. I never saw any of the episodes concerning the bear until the one where Syaoran left, and it just magically appeared. His crush/blushing was never explained, just ignored, so the viewer was left in the dark. As an early 90s kid, I did not understand why Syaoran blushed whenever Yukito appeared. Also, Syaoran and Mei Lin's "engagement" was dubbed around as well. The episode where Syaoran breaks up with Mei Lin was completely cut. Mei Lin just up and left for apparently no real reason. I imagine this is why I felt like Syaoran and Sakura's relationship came out of nowhere.

Considering what a defining turn for the series it was for me, I can't believe they just cut Meiling and Shaoran out. I guess because they were cousins? What an absolute mess the dub must have been. It really does seem to work that way. At first you're like, "this is so simple, is there anything to it?" And after awhile you're like, "oh it's just innocent, and therein lies it's great power and beauty."

I love CCS. Almost 20 years since I first saw it on air, it still resonates with me. I still love it for its character dynamics, the relationships, the love every character has for one another in their own different ways. Which is why today, I feel its been put on the backburner, hardly a mention by anyone despite, what I feel, this series is up there with the likes of Sailor Moon and even recent series like Nanoha and Madoka Magica. It's almost never mentioned compared to the rest when it really made such great headway with its story, design and cast of relatable characters. I still rank Sakura up there as still one of my all time favourite anime protagonists.
@FilmFlux4 жыл бұрын
It seems to me like it has a pretty large following (or at least, did at the time), but I haven't been able to find any definitive figures other than DVD sales or manga sales. At least from the 90s my impression is that if you knew any Magical Girl Anime, the likelihood would be Sailor Moon first, Cardcaptor Sakura second.
@Boom124 жыл бұрын
@@FilmFlux yeah that is the consensus. Its always Sailor Moon 1st with CCS 2nd. My concern is that the title has been barely getting a mention with most crowds these days. It was big back then, no doubt 'cause I had classmates making fun of me watching it lol. It just seems it may lay a tad behind. Like recently when Funimation announced they got the rights to stream CCS, it didn't garner much attention on the community tab. There were comments but it just wasn't like something that really sets fire to the crowd and such.

@@Boom12 Yes. It's not like Evangelion coming to Netflix. It's quite a different ushering. But it does get mentioned. A sizable fanbase, but just, smaller :)

You threw me off guard when you said there are no predators. Did you know that in the original manga her 30 year old teacher literally proposed to her 10 year old classmate. The Romantic shipping in cardcaptors is literally questionable.

Very beautiful interpretation! Thank you for this. I need to finish watching CCS, because I left off around the 62nd episode feeling a bit bored with the beginning of the final anime arc. But your review reminds me why I always loved Cardcaptors as a child and as an adult preferring the original Japanese version: female empowerment, natural development of romantic feelings, and homoromantic representations like Tomoyo and Yuki. 💖

I love how, much like the rest of the show, the gay relationships are so innocent and natural. At no point is any emotion questioned, nor is there anything to overcome like the judgement or concerns of others. It's just pure.

I believe that Sakura's story has a more typically Japanese sentiment. The ending where everyone vanishes or becomes distant is meant to symbolise the sense of "growing into adulthood" in Japan. The symbol of the Sakura flower comes with cultural meanings and phrases like how romantically fleeting childhood and youth in Japan is... before one is expected to grow up and join the very formal and responsible adult world. The magic of youth lasting but a Season (a sakura tree blossoming and transforming). Luckily, the closer Japanese society came to the millennium, modern culture has begun rebelling a little and it is more possible and acceptable now when growing up in Japan to retain a sense of warm youthfulness a little longer into adulthood. It's not uncommon now for an adult woman to carry an elegant bag with subtle cardcaptor sakura aesthetic incorporated, and for adults to hang out in hip fun themed cafes together, among other things. But it is still a pretty tough society to grow up in. Children are in a sense warned early about their worlds inevitably changing.
