Is Cardcaptor Sakura still worth watching?

Tomoyo was a relief character, but also, is a lesson about love. Sakura has a very subtle message about different types of love, Tomoyo is, the unrequited love. Like a fate of destiny, Tomoyo falls in love with Sakura like her mom with Sakura's mom. Instead of getting mad and removing her from her life, Tomoyo respected her friend's platonic feelings and even helped her out with Lee. Tomoyo teaches us that if you really love someone, you'll be happy when the other is happy, even if is not with you. She doesn't spite Sakura or wants to ruin Lee, she is the most mature and kind hearted. She basically even taught indirectly to Sakura how to deal with her unrequited love for Yukito, she understood her well, but isn't as mature enough like her, thats why she needed to talk it with Lee and cry herself out. Tomoyo is not only important for us for a great lesson, but also for Sakura, because she encourages her, and is her beloved best friend, and even if she doesn't return her romantic feelings, Sakura does show her that she really loves and cares for Tomoyo.

Tomoyo is a pretty great character in my opinion, she isn't stuck up like most rich kids her age and actively cares for all her friends and hand makes all of Sakura's outfits, of which makes for an interesting opportunity where Sakura doesn't have magical girl transformation sequences. She also helped motivate Sakura to save the day in some cases and lets not forget how it was thanks to her mom and her that they now have cell phones and other advanced tech. It may be a little weird, but also an interesting story decision that helps flavor the world a bit more. She also adds a little more humor to the overall story. It is weird for her to have a thing for her cousin though, though to be fair her mom was the same way so maybe it's learned or the effect of her family's magic. But the fact that she never acts strays to much in a weird direction helps her case a little.

I think the weird aspect was just too much and the negatives outweighed the positives with her character for me. But this has shown to me how a lot of people could really warm to her character.

@@liamnidas to each their own, it's just like how I thought the way they has Meiling Li was never incorporated that well into the story until CLEAR. It was kind of jarring as they acted like she didn't exist whenever she was gone but then made the episode mainly about her when she was around. I think it's because she was anime canon so they didn't know how to use her in episodes in the canon.

This anime is still better than 95% of what we have today... Because you won't watch it for the plot. You will watch it for the feelings it gives you, the overall vibe, the atmosphere and the "feel good, feel home" sense. Most animes nowadays completely ignore the part where anime should have it's own atmosphere. That's why all isekais are the same. And even some great animes doesn't bother with this... for some reason? They just try to reckap the "good plot of manga" but doesn't try to be something unique... "Let's just slap some epic Sawano music and we are done" - that's their credo it seems. That's why I don't watch anthing nowadays.

I think Tomoyo adds a lot more than you think. As a child, this was relatable as heck. CCS is one of the only shows where the whole class is portrayed as being good friends with each other, without having "bad" children, that gossip or bad talk. So it makes sense Sakura is kinda friends with everyone. WHICH ADDS TO THE WHOLE VIBE OF THE SHOW. This show feels like some heaven on earth. And it made me wanna be good and helpful and even making food! But as a lot of girl at that age, a BEST friend just is something different. even though tomoyo doesnt become a magical companion, like in most magical girl series, she embodies being there for you through thick and thin. Considering she isn't magical, she is extremely helpful. She is made to be the rich kid, that was taught compassion by her mother, who adored her cousin for her traits. This drives the plot several times, because you can add all these items magical girls usually just conveniently have without breaking emersion this is the real world. Sakura wouldnt have been able to affort cell phones or costumes in her relatable single parent middle class household. The outfits were what made the show great. And as you said, it's a clever alternative to the typical henshin outfits they usually get. It feeds into "this magic is realistic and has rules understandable to us, so we know the limitations of it without needing to be told". A transformation would have worked, but its so much fun that these kids were like "lets make up a whole choreography for you to practice". It adds so much to its 90s school girl charm I understand the "creepy" argument as a girl who would have felt unconfortable if a boy was this obsessed and started filming me. But she has best friend priviledges. And she basically has consent in that matter too. Which is literally the turning point between creepy and ok.

All really good points. She definitely has her positive traits and like you said is able to remain some of the immersion. And I also have to remember that I am a guy and my friendships with guys is not going to be identical to friendships between girls. And it is true that Sakura consents. My issue is just that even though Sakura consents, it does often feel like that it makes her uncomfortable.

CLAMP, creators of the Sakura do not care about sexuality. Their view on love is very pure. They explained many times that when someone loves someone, then someone loves that someone and that is it. In their works when couple gets together, they are together in their universes in each possible world. So no point worring about it. In their vision it works like that and that is okay.

YES. Putting this video in my "see later" playlist but before i come back lemme say YES. I have started watching ccs recently and been having a delightful time discovering this anime! (even though i don't get the nostalgic layer, that most people have when they watch it in their 20s or later) The animation is crafted with so much care, the storytelling is subtile and clever... so YES as an adult you can definitely enjoy it. It has a sweet, warm and nuanced flavor, to put it bluntly cardcaptor sakura is honey.

As an adult, I've revisited a few pieces of fiction that I enjoyed as a child, only to find that a lot of the magic has been lost. I'm glad to say that Cardcaptor Sakura is an anime that has still retained, and likely always will retain, its sense of wonder and joy throughout the years. To this day, it remains a comfort-show for me when things get tough. I really like how you described that Cardcaptor Sakura had so much filler even though it never felt like it. In a way, I always thought that was something done deliberately by the creators. Although it's generally categorized as a Magical Girl anime, I felt like it was also meant to be a sort of Slice-of-Life for children, before that genre even formally existed. Lol I find it funny that western audience thinks that the announcement on April 1st is a joke. In the CLAMP universe April 1st is actually a significant date for Syaoran n Sakura. In Tsubasa, April 1st is actually their birthday, n they share it with another Clamp Character Watanuki frm xxxHolic. Also in Japan, April is the month associated w new beginnings. That why when u watch any anime in school, their 1st days are always in April.

First off, phenomenal video! You conveyed your feelings about the show beautifully 🥰 tomoyo for me is my favourite character as once you look past the initial layers she’s actually the most mature character in the show. More so than her own mother. It’s been said in the comments already her feelings of unreciprocated love are prevalent throughout, but the scene that clenches it for me is when meiling is crying into her lap about how she just lost shaoran. Tomoyo doesn’t say anything in this scene at all but you know with how she looks at meiling just how she’s had to tread that path with Sakura already, even after mentioning that she knows the person she loves won’t love her back. It’s bittersweet and more mature than some adults out there 🥲 Again great video. This show was super formative for me ❤️

My Forever Favourite anime ❤❤❤. No other show has come close to replacing it for me. From its warmth, kindness n comfort, it's just very hard to not love it. On a technical sense, it just have great art and design ❤. So much of my identity as a artist is just to emulate what this series gave me when I was little.

I wanted to share my opinion: So i started ccs 4 years ago as a kid so i ofc watched the animax dub bc i found it on netflix i was nine at that time i never new anything else about this anime this year in March decided lets rewatch. i noticed tomoyo having a crush on sakura and learned alot about the characters i love tomoyo honestly bc i find her sweet and caring but she is weird no doubt. i loved Sakura more after watching the Japanese version. i honestly love that scream hoe or when she is around kaho or yuki she goes hanyaa or dazed as meiling description, there iconic . I found syourans personality having a huge glow up feel he got way too kind . When i read the manga and learned meling was not a real character, i was way too sad, like she brought drama even tho she was quiet useless. i honestly love kero he is just a real fun character i sometimes wish he was real... The only thing i hated about this series is probably Rikas' relationship with Terada like i was surprised, he propesed and dated her in the manga that is missed up, and tbh i never noticed the filler. Clear card was fun but the cliffhanger got me disappointed i realy wanted to know what Eriol and syouran were hiding it took me along time to find it. the manga was amazing i loved Akiho alot she was nice yuna d kaito was okay after i knew his plan or what taboo magic was it turns out he want to protect Akiho. i was technically super surprised about syouran taking the sakura cards. the most thing am happy about clear card was toya and kero getting along in the end of the manga. Things that got me quiet confused was probably what kaito used the mirror card in the play but understoodod it after using my last braincells. But i got 1 thing in my mind what if Nateshikos key turns to a staff or something not a card like in the manga bc in the manga she got a watch with a spell that helped her end the story to a wholesom ending. That's it i really liked your point of view, and thats mine am 13, so if you don't get i understand 😅

Luckily, Clear Card season 2 is already confirmed so the anime will definitely continue. As useless as she is, I would miss Meiling if she wasn't in this series. She's basically the proof that you won't notice the filler. Also, Rita and Terada is really weird. And yes, Kero is the greatest character to ever exist.

I watched The American version first and fell in love with it and then I found out that and the Japanese version they cut out like fucking 30 episodes or some shit. And I found the real one Cardcaptor Sakura and fell in love all over again while I have a love for the English dub of card captors the new dub for the original Japanese series in the English to me is bad, so I exclusively watch it in Japanese. Unless I’m feeling nostalgic, and go for card captors

Yeah Tomoyo weirds me out too 😅. Lots of ppl like her cause she cute n would want a friend like that. As a kid I thought nothing of it. I'm thinking like she's a designer n enjoys seeing her costume in action or like liking dress up. But after reading the manga n finding out abt her feelings, her actions r now super weird to me 😅. There are already lots of comments telling you why Tomoyo is important plot wise, but here is why Tomoyo is important for the target audience. Like with any other magical girl anime the little girls that watch the show want to be the main character and probably play pretend as such. But Tomoyo is the character everyone wants as their friend. Especially little girls that might feel a bit lost and have trouble making friends wish for someone as caring, kind and loving as Tomoyo. So while all the action parts of the series are fun for play, any time Tomoyo and Sakura just hang out together is just as exciting for little girls since they imagine themselves doing this stuff with a friend. And if they don't have any, that friend is just Tomoyo. The show is still so beloved because of all the slice of life elements, the cozy and dreamy vibes. It would be much more boring without it.

Tomoyo is basically an author avatar. Her love for Sakura started as romantic but by the end it matured to motherly, actively trying to get Sakura and Syaoran together but in a very subtle way; the same way a mother would do for her kid. In the way a creator is technically their character's parent. Her being an author avatar is handwaved explicitly on one of the anime specials, portraying her as the actual creator of the whole anime series.

I still love it my self last time I saw it was maybe 2022 April 1 is Sakura birthday that she share with 4 other characters from the clamp universe And if you're unaware of what the clamp University is it's the universe that links all of the mangas that clamp the group that created cardcaptor Sakura has made they have a multiverse kind of like the MCU and other comic stories that are all linked together and there have been crossovers with cardcaptor Sakura in a way and another series where there is a version of Sakura and Lee called tsubada and tsubada is lined to xxxholic If you ever get interested in going over more mangas or shows from clamp I suggest reading the manga for tsubada and xxxholic at the same time because they both are in a way on the same timeline and like I said are linked and you have to read both to understand the ending of both mangas 😅 Someone on KZbin also did a video on how all of the universe is including cardcaptor is linked to the other ones I believe you can find it I hear if you just type it in 😅

Yr take on how good the filler aspect of the show is exactly why this series is amazing ❤❤❤. The ppl outside of the original creators clearly understood what is good abt the story's concept. Though some aspects can be very different, it is expanded into their filler. That's when u know the story is put into good hands during the adaptation. They clealy understood the heart of Cardcaptor Sakura n adaptated it into the anime.

It finally showed me a Tomoyo, including her mother a side of them outside of their relationship to Sakura n Nadeshiko. Outside of their weird relationship towards both individually, their character writing always seem to revolve around their weird love of them.

During that episode, they finally focused on Tomoyo n Sakura's friendship till the end. As for her mom, she finally shows glimpses of motherly love towards her daughter. If it was just the manga, Tsubomi just seem to project her lingering feelings towards Sakura n I bearly see her being a mother for Tomoyo.

To me the og CCS is still my favorite cuz it is a classic animation that I can't move on and there is some plot that wasn't resolved but still a pretty good show, and it's quite worth watching it over again. The sequel CCS: clear cards, was also pretty good although the animation doesn't feel the same excitement I felt on the classic one. But it's still worth watching what happened after the OVA/movie end and get to see the couples get more progress in each episode. (Warring some spoilers) I was also reading the manga and holy behold, there some difference between the manga and anime like there some of the anime wasn't canon show in the manga. Funny thing is I ship Touya and Yukito as a side ship cuz they maybe friends but in every episode they're always together, as kid at the time I thought it's a normal bff thing but as I grow and rewatching (in sub version) the episode I noticed some hints of bromance or romance between them that's probably why I started shipping them in the side line until I read the manga version I was shocked to discover their canon 😂 I was literally cry of happiness. I could understand why in English dub they don't show it and even cut some of the great romance tension between them cuz kid show and as to English sub they really hinted they're a thing, and finally in the manga they officially called is (´༎ຶ ͜ʖ ༎ຶ `)♡

Syaoran's name is "Li Xiaolang" in Cantonese. He's, after all, from Hong Kong originally. In Japanese the name is phonologically adapted as "Shaoran Ri", often transcribed as "Syaoran Li".

“Li Xiaolang" is the Mandarin pronunciation of his name (李小狼), in Cantonese it would sound more like "Lay Siew-lawn". While it is true that someone from Hong Kong would more likely use the Cantonese pronunciation of their name, we don't really expect non-Chinese manga artists to know the intricacies of Chinese regions and dialects lol. Also a bit of a fun fact: his name means "little wolf", which is...not something Chinese parents would actually name their children, because "wolf" carries a bunch of negative connotations and associations in Chinese😅But again, we don't really expect non-Chinese manga artists to know that lol

Its made from the same Mangala orga (Clamp) and has Shyaoran and Sakura as Protagonists with lots of the other Characters on the side too but a different story! Its on of my FAVORIT Manga ever and has an AMAZING soundtrack made by Yuki Kajiura.

While both the original and Clear Card are favourites of mine, three things have definitely not aged well: -Sakura's parents (her mother was 16; her father 25 and he was a teacher) -Rika-chan and Terada-sensei (toned down in the anime) -Kahou and Eriol (I know Eriol is "mentally" an adult because he's Clow Reed's reincarnation, but still) One critic said that, if seen as "wish fullfilment", then Rika's story is sweet, but other than that it's just wrong. I love CCS though!

​@@liamnidas Nanase Ohkawa (CLAMP's leader and writer) did the series composition for the anime and wrote most of the scripts for the episodes. You can see that she definitely toned down Rika-chan and Terada-sensei's "romance". And both of them make only make cameos in Clear Card.

​@@liamnidas Some especially risqué and even violent shoujo manga in the 90s and 2000s were serialized in magazines aimed at primary school and preteen girls; a number of parents were definitely alarmed. 😅 Many schoolgirls all over the world have crushes on their teachers (like Rika-chan) and it's fine (so long as the teacher doesn't reciprocate), but it's concerning how shoujo manga implies that it's "romantic" and "sweet" to pursue a relationship with an older man (with the flower imagery in the background, etc.).

Never felt like filler. Meiling is an anime original that fits in so well that reading the manga is jarring because she's not there. And her presence in the Clear Card season gave the series full nostalgia vibes because finally the whole cast is together again.

Syaoran is how they pronouns it in Japanese. In direct Mandarin Chinese it's Xiao Lang. His frm Hong Kong and his name is written in Chinese Characters. Direct translation his actually name little wolf

Also for anyone confused abt the pronunciation, Japanese tend to not pronouns th letter L properly. They would pronounce it as R then L, hence why XiaoLang turned to Syaoran.

The correct pronunciation of his name is "Xiǎoláng" which is a Mandarin name and means "little wolf" in English. "Shaoran" is a bad pronunciation of his name in Japanese. "Syaoran" is a bad pronunciation of his name in English. Are you going to review other adaptations based on CLAMP works ?

I probably will. I'm definitely planning on watching Chobits and xxxHolic at some point, especially xxxHolic. Whether I actually review them would depend on how I feel about them. If I don't feel strongly enough about them then I won't talk about them,. But If they're anywhere near as good as Cardcaptor Sakura then I likely will.

YES this show is worth rewatching, yes there are weird topics touched in this show but real life is weird, this show is more of a reflection of real life than it is fantasy. If you want to live in a fantasy world this show isnt for you.

i didn't finish watching the video because i feel you missed the whole essence of what made CCS special. Film Flux does a far better explanation and analysis and gets to the core of what CCS is truly about- it's the feelings, relationships and the tenderness of the series. the fact that you don't like tomoyo, think she's odd because of the obvious lesbian undertones, and think she's a disposable character means you truly don't care about friendship (and i don't know how you can overlook how actually helpful she was to sakura) and just don't understand that this series explicitly portrays a myriad of taboo relationships. love in all forms was portrayed as acceptable and completely wholesome- as tomoyo loved sakura unconditionally. she was a vital character, and if you didn't get that, you may as well say that every character that doesn't have magic is a disposable character, because you actually thought the show was about the magic......

I don't think Tomoyo is odd because of lesbian undertones. I think she's odd because the show repeatedly tells us that she's odd. She clearly makes Sakura uncomfortable at times. Tomoyo isn'y just in love with Sakura or infatuated with her. She's obsessed. And that is creepy and unhealthy. Also I don't know why you think I think the show was only about the magic. Actually, wait, I do. It's because you didn't finish the video. You complain about me not going into a deep enough analysis and compare me to another channel which is unfair when you couldn't even be bothered to finish the video.

I don't watch SAO even there are so many people that like it, it is my own opinion that I don't watch it and it is the other's business if they do.
