The song is fabulous of course, but can we just talk about how stunning Sadhana is in black and white?! Also the context of her leaving his house despite the rain, and the guy is so honorable too. The whole thing sadly reminds me of how we have traded away some very important values of love that protected both men and women.

Recently I attended a live programme of Pt Hridaynath Mangeshkar (1st programme post Lata Didi's demise) where he narrated the bacground of this song. It seems Lata didi asked Pt Hridaynath ji to have a look at this composition and it seems he could not understand the way it is being composed as it has sudden ups and downs. Lata didi then said Panditji that that you are still a kid to understand this composition. Panditji considers Salil Choudhary as his guru....unparallel music...unparalleled lyrics...unparalleled singer. Not a single moment passes without remembering these legends. Jai Hind

Listening to and watching this today, this week of all weeks, brings an incredible set of emotions. From the memory of my late sister singing this song in her beautiful voice countless times, to the gorgeous Sadhna, a family friend, so sadly lost. And above all, the Saraswati herself whose likes we will not see again. Lataji will live in our hearts and minds forever, not least because of this flawless song. The thing about her greatness is that this wasn’t even her only flawless song. We have lost count of how many songs she sang without even a semblance of an error, how lilting and perfect every taan, every meend was executed. We are blessed to have lived to hear and see her.

Bade gulam ali saab got so mesmerised by this sitar piece that when he met Salil da, he asked Salil da in awe that how did he compose that beautiful sitar melody, to which salil da replied that he just did it naturally.. Being a self taught musician, composer and arguably the greatest arranger of that time, music came to Salil da naturally.. Another thing to notice in Salil Da's music is the constant change in scale and use of polyphonic counterpoints, because of which his songs though being complex sounds divine as well

Thanks for sharing this story. It might be relevant to mention that Pt. Ravi Shankar was against the use of sitar in this one. He thought it's forced. Bollywood major composers stood with Salil babu. Later Pandit ji changed his view.

The sanchari part is just divine.. the micro scale change in "tere hi khwabon me" is like pure explosion of musical pathos.. that's why salil da is salil da.. Even the Oscar winning mozart of madras is incapable of conceiving this kind of melody.. sad that Salil da is so underrated..

Hello Saumyajit, appreciate your comment. Salil da was a creator and experimentation was his specialty. A genius, for sure. In the song "kahin dur jab din dhal jaye", I believe you will find small scale changes. Another song that comes to mind is "Mad bhari ye hawayein". My most favorite is "Chod chali ghar tera babul" from the film Anokha daan. Let me know your feedback. I feel so fortunate to have met him in a studio in Mumbai. Thank you. Pradip Trivedi.

he's not under-rated but appreciated a lot. What is Exquisite is usually not "widely" appreciated because it's not a "mass" thing. So it's in the nature of things and I am sure Salil Da has a fervent fan following among many circles. Though his music may have been inspired (including say some tunes) by the russian music and jazz but even that requires talent and judgement because not every inspired piece is a hit.

Lata Mangeshkar, with her mellifluous voice, soothing and captivating singing and exquisite renditions enthralled music lovers over the last seven decades. Lata's haunting melodies and timeless classics have given tremendous pleasure to my heart, mind and soul. After all these years of listening I still cannot stop playing those songs and hearing them over and over, and the thirst remains unquenched. No wonder Lata is referred to as The Nightingale of India. Lata Mangeshkar has ruled the hearts of all music lovers with her beautiful voice, melodious songs, and exquisite renditions. Listening to Lata Mangeshkar's songs gives one the feeling of spending time on the banks of the river and watching the magic river water flow --- smooth, gentle and serene. The enchanting voice of Lata Mangeshkar has produced some timeless classics, captivated the connoisseurs of music, has given lots of pleasure to the body, mind and soul, and enhanced our lives with nostalgia and sentimentality. I just cannot believe that the person who stamped her indelible imprint on me with her renditions has left this world. I wonder if there is any music lover who would not get this sentimental feeling. Lata Mangeshkar's death was to me like the clanging bell of a departing train. It was like the deep hoot of a ship leaving the shore. We are forced to reconcile to the idea that she is no more. But Lata lives on with her songs.........

Surbahar (pronunciation:[s̪urbəhɑːr], सुरबहार, سربهار; lit. Springtime of Notes)[1] sometimes known as bass sitar, is a plucked string instrument used in the Hindustani classical music of the Indian subcontinent. It is closely related to the sitar, but has a lower pitch. Depending on the instrument's size, it is usually pitched two to five whole steps below the standard sitar.

Cannot get over her passing yet. Lata ji was always part of our ethos/consciousness, as her career began more or less at the same time as Independent India. Even as children our earliest memories are sounds and not visuals and so these songs which were playing in our homes and which helped put us to sleep made us believe that Lata ji had been around since the beginning of time. It's hard to imagine a world without her going forward. My heart feels so heavy and I feel a part of me has died.
