Apogee makes incredible interfaces…. UAD devices are top of the line… YOu can’t get better gear…. Just different gear. As an interface the Apollo and the apogee will let you record tracks that you can take into the studio and continue using…. If you’re using a focusrite pro-Sumer interface you’re gonna be in trouble using files recorded through those converters as the ouput on a professional device will be HOTTER than how it was recorded….. So if you record on a pro-Sumer interface and want to ever use your tracks in a professional setting, DON’T RECORD HOT…. Keep your RMS levels around -22dbfs …. That’s almost 10db lower than where the converters are aligned in those crappy devices BUT you’ll be able to actually use those files later.

The symphony seems awesome. Just curious, why did you get the Thunderbolt on the Twin over the Usb version? Just recently got a great deal on a Twin Usb and I’m loving it. That apogee does seem awesome too though!

"UAD clearly prioritizes MacOS with their devices. Don't then market it like it's supported in Windows when it's clearly not." THANK YOU. I've had the same problem with Avid and their interfaces. I was looking for a high end interface comparable to that price point and I was about to consider universal audio. This video just saved me multiple weeks worth of headaches. I think I'll consider Apogee or Focusrite in leu of this. Thank you for the video.

Step 1: Match the audio Bit rate in windows control panel, DAW, and in your Audio interface's native application Step 2: Enable virtual 1/2 on audio interface (routes all sound coming in/out of audio interface back into itself as a new audio channel) Step 3: Select the Virtual 1/2 in any program such as OBS, Discord etc and you're good to go Remember for 95% of the population mac works best, but once you've chosen to work in programs for the top 5% windows reigns supreme. You will be frustrated, you will want to throw away your computer BUT once you figure it out you will know all the ins and outs of your computer. When anything goes wrong (trust me it will) you will know exactly where to look to resolve the problem. You are now both the mechanic and the race car driver.............

I own a Razer Blade 15 base model from mid 2019. Windows 10. I struggled to connect my device (Apollo Twin Duo Mk II - Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter connection). Then I typed in Thunderbolt on my windows search bar. Clicked on an app my system had installed called "Thunderbolt Control Center". Plugged in my device and thankfully for me the control center recognized it. I then clicked on the tab next to the name of my Apollo Twin and changed it from "Do Not Connect" to "Always Connect" and this immediately fixed my issues and took me to downloading the UAD software to recognize and allow my device to function properly. Hope this is helpful for anyone in a similar situation.

ehyo I got the UA Apollo twin thunderbolt and I had 2 days but I solved my issues now. It was a must for me to use the asio driver from of the UA interface. But WIndows just showed me the WDM Driver. So I downloaded VoiceMeteer Banana gave it a try. The problem there was the same. I only saw the WDM and MME Driver. So I finally realized the VoiceMeteerBanana is a 32bit Software. So I switched to the VoiceMeeterPotato64 bit and there it is!!! You will find the asio ua apollo thunderbolt driver. Mic Speaker and Headphones are working fine now!!

@@jamesrachansky6575 I use Voicemeeter Potato 64bit. Its really really important that you go into the souce path in windows and search the x64 version. Default is 32bit so you wont find the thunderbolt ASIO Driver in it. Only in the x64 version. Thats the most important thing. So just download Voicemeeter Potato and the UA Software from the official website and you should be fine.

MY SOLUTION: I struggled with the same problem. I changed the C state in the Bios, disabled Intel SpeedStep and followed other optimization steps found in Universal Audio's help website, however the same problem persisted. I decided to update the Thunderbolt Firmware on my MSI laptop ( just look up Thunderbolt 3 MSI FIrmware on KZbin and you'll find the tutorial) , then matched the sample rate on 1) the UAD Console 2) Sound Control Panel 3) my DAW. I had to go into the BIOS to ENABLE Thunderbolt Firmware Updates, as in the factory BIOS this setting was turned to DISABLED. After this simply Turn OFF and ON the Apollo interface. Hope this helps.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. I've felt like i've been on a stranded island when it comes to using this interface! I have an Apollo Twin for PC / Windows 10. My laptop specs are great but every month I run into a few days where the crackling/popping becomes constant and it just messes up my listening. I've tried every last troubleshooting method, contacting Sweetwater/UAD (doesn't help Covid was happening recently to where they literally had no one on the customer service phone lines) and nothing works. It weirdly fixes itself after a few days (?) But eventually comes back. It's so inconvenient for such a pricey/quality product when working correctly.

I watched a lot of videos on this as I've been trying to get my new ApolloX4 to work with my Neumann TLM103 on a Windows 10 PC with Thunderbolt. I was definitely shocked to hear the garbage that was coming out of my microphone after spending so much money on it. I thought it was definitely me as I am new to this kind of gear. Now I'm learning that it is my Windows PC. My audio sounds exactly like the example in this video. I watched a lot of other videos tried using ASIO and i feel like it is a sketchy set up. Nice to have someone give it to me straight and really explain it. Basically I need to get a MAC and accept the fact that the Apollo will work best with a MAC. Thanks for being so knowledgeable and making this video!

If the UA drivers for Windows support ASIO, you don't need any third party software to use it. In fact, you SHOULD NOT use any third party software in the middle at all. You should be able to use the interface natively from any application that supports ASIO (like most DAWs), and the audio should record and playback without problems and with the lowest latency possible. Maybe I didn't understand your video completely well, but it sounded to me like you tried to use the interface in an application via WDM using a 3rd party routing ASIO to WDM, and that's always buggy. All known programs that convert ASIO to WDM work pretty bad, starting by adding latency to the routing. Now, one thing is to be able to use the interface natively with ASIO from a DAW, and another that the interface drivers don't support WDM and can't directly be used (or even seen) by the OS and other applications that don't support ASIO. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't work properly using ASIO, without any 3rd party software in the middle, from a DAW. Another thing I saw in the post you showed at 8:52, is that, this user specifically, is clearly having a completely different issue: confusing USB-C with Thunderbolt. He connected his interface to USB-C and Windows warned him about limited functionality for a Thunderbolt device, precisely because he doesn't have Thunderbolt. Same connector, same cable, but not the same kind of bus. It COMPLETELY sucks that UA doesn't have WDM drivers and the interface cannot be used like other interfaces for any program running in the OS and making it invisible in the list of audio devices for Windows iteself. But, if the interface can indeed be used by a DAW directly via ASIO, then that's why they're marketing it as compatible with Windows. They sure should clarify this situation with WDM, or even better, start providing WDM drivers like any other respectable company.
@FilmIn5D
@FilmIn5D 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the image I showed was for an unrelated issue. I couldn’t find the post at the time of editing. But I did work with UA directly and ask them point blank “will you be supporting WDM drivers in the near future” and there answer was no. Thus I sent back the Apollo and pre ordered my symphony desktop.

FYI The Apollo Twin DUO is made primarily for PC and does not need Thunderbolt. It's the Twin X series that's made for Mac. The Twin series is lighter grey, the Twin X is the darker graphite. Unfortunately, only the Twin X series has the QUAD, which means 4 Sharc processors in the interface. Apollo clearly does not tailor their products for PCs, which sucks :(
@FilmIn5D
@FilmIn5D 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I feel like most of my problems stemmed from the fact that I was trying to use a thunderbolt 3 device on PC. And many people have said in these comments that the usb one is more stable. However the fact of the matter is UAD doesn’t support MME Windows drivers, which while they certainly are not a professional audio driver especially for DAWs, still a lot of everyday programs rely on MME drivers to work properly and conveniently

Did you try using the included Universal Audio ASIO driver for Windows? That ASIO app you showed is something people use to aggregate multiple audio devices. I have an Apollo x4 on a 2018 Omen laptop with onboard TB3 and have no issues. Matching sample rates is a principal audio rule for recording , and once I did that I can get audio from Windows with no problem. UA has a recent post(last Tuesday 8/18/20) about using WMD drivers with Apollos, but I never had to go that route.

I use my asio just for pro tools and set the windows media to out the onboard interface. Windows on board audio and uad devices at 96k is two different resolutions. If browse the internet on KZbin I have set up windows to only play out my computer on board audio so it does not interfere with with pro tools running on the apollo. I have the option to run windows on apollo but record in 96K. The best thing about using the onboard audio for windows and asio for pro tools is that when make a mp3 file from pro tools, I use windows media player and wmp only play on the computer onboard audio not the uad interface. if you used the apollo on windows playback device while using pro tools sometimes the uad controller won't stay at one resolution. Set windows audios to play out another audio device. If I have a focusrite and a uad I would set windows audio to only play out the focusrite while uad is for pro tools.

I am moving from an old 2012 macbook pro to a custom PC workstation with a ryzen 3950x, the x570 gigabyte Aorus master motherboard comes with a thunderbolt header to which one can connect a PCIe thunderbolt 3 adaptor to connect the UAD interface which I've been using for several years now, I'll see how that goes as soon as I run some tests otherwise I'll have to sadly leave UAD for a USB interface. If my UAD Apollo twin doesn't work then I'll maybe consider the SSL 2+ interface for audio on a PC with Ableton

Update is it's working like a charm without any hiccups on thunderbolt! My UAD audio interface is working just like it did on my Mac without any issues! This is what I done: 1. Connect the Gigabyte Titan ridge thunderbolt PCIe adaptor to motherboard and into PC header. 2. Connect Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1&2 adaptor to the card to the titan ridge card. 3. Connect the UAD audio interface to the Startech Thunderbolt adaptor. All done and working perfectly and sounds beautiful! The computer store said this is the first time ever they've had a request for an AMD custom build with thunderbolt as it's usually always Intel, but they were impressed that it works flawlessly! I just hope that thunderbolt become a standard connection on all motherboards as it'll open many options for creatives like myself to actually build a PC with a better connection than a USB interface. Also if you want to know my basic specs it's as follows: AMD 3950x Gigabyte x570 Aorus master motherboard 64GB G Skill Trident RAM. Gigabyte Titan ridge thunderbolt PCIe card & the Startech Thunderbolt adaptor.

@@jhanninnen you're welcome man, hope it works out for you, but my advice is check out the motherboard details and see if it's compatibility is listed on the Gigabyte Titan ridge site as it lists which motherboard works with it. Lead me to this video and I'm glad he documented this. My issue is only with recording, not playback. The issue with recording is the bit depth is locked at 32bit but most apps only support 16bit in WDM. I wanted to use this with Davinci Resolve to do ADR but it is looking like that isn't going to work. I also have a Focurite Clarett 2Pre which doesn't have any issue with WDM/ASIO or managing any driver settings. My biggest issue with the 2Pre is that is doesn't have DSP but they both sound amazing.

Very helpful. About 90% of the audio guys are on mac and swear by the Apollo but I’ve been hearing very good things about RME and antelope and focusrite. I have the Scarlett focusrite 6i6 but I’m really not sure if I really need to upgrade. I use that interface on my 2012 Mac mini but when I mix on it in logic the cpu struggles. I also have a $4k powerhouse custom pc but all my third party plugins and daws are on my Mac mini. I also bought my first preamp the tb12 tone beast and power conditioner and some active Avantone mix cubes but the interface seems to be the deciding factor with its connections and Apple m1 chips just came out also. I use my focusrite 2i2 for basic desktop audio, so I have no need or interest in using the Apollo twin for that. I just want it to work with recording in Ableton. @@FilmIn5D Man, the thing is it DOES WORK. Crackling resolved by sinking bitrate, tuning windows pc as suggested is healthy thing to do on Windows anyways (power saving more, processor settings). Disabling OSB or anything you don't need makes you PC work better. It does do Zoom or any communicator with same low latency crystal clear (that musicians are striving with DAW). I was derailed by reposts like that when they just released first TB interfaces and did not have clear instruction on site. Than my friends said take hands from my nose and just setup right. Still "scared" by "itdoesnotworkon windows". I only risked buying cheaper Arrow, not TwinX/4. It worked for me in no time on even generic office Dell. with garbage OSC. Even with TB docking (which also had embedded sc) UA works the best of any other generic usb-2/3/C interface (believe me i tried them all). I returned the Arrow because not enough processing power for the plugs I want and going to get TwinX or X6 when deal is right. It cost more money, and indeed worth it. Though I lost good deals and wasted my time on "trying".

@@FilmIn5D Having said that, recommending people who are not musician and need interface for streaming/blogging (replacing crappy OBSC) they can go with ANY USB interface. Especially onr with loopback feature. Also many USB can support connecting to iOS, so interface can be multi-use. There is plenty of $100-$200 interfaces for that, I just got Tascam 208i for my iOS needs. Only if people do need lower latency and more bandwidth that TB3 can offer and IF they are willing/capable of doing minor setup on their windows they can invest more money on any Apollo interface, matching their needs.

I would need to do a complete rebuild for the specs e.g. Thunderbolt 2 etc. I would like to use it with my old Macbook Pro (late 2013? - considered obsolete/vintage) My plan would be to use my PC for Web Development and Design (Adobe CC full suite, Node, React.js) and use the mac ONLY for audio creation using the Apollo. My Question to you is - Should I just sell the Apollo seen as I'm using my PC as my main machine, or would my old Mac be ok for audio if I'm only running Pro Tools, or Ableton live etc? Finally, I plan to create video for a KZbin channel on my PC. It has the power to handle Premier and after effects comfortably. I would be recording all audio into the Mac and transferring it into Premier on the PC.......It already sounds like a headache, and I'm only asking for advice because I'd love to use the UAD again. Any guidance greatly appreciated.

The sound quality is at pro standard, many established artists record their songs and vocals on this beast. Its definitely used for DAWS mostly in combination with Apples industry standard recording software Logic Pro X. Universal Audio highly recommends this device to be used on Apple hardware. Its not really designed specifically for normal everyday use. In the camera and photography world you'll fin the same thing. For example, medium format type cameras deliver incredible photos but are not recommended to take such camera outside and snap away. Its for a specific audience, in this case recording artists, engineers and producers, not so much normal consumers.

Thumbs up if you're listening to this on your crackling, glitchy UAD Thunderbolt device and you don't notice much of a difference when he shows you how glitchy it sounds on his side ;)

I guess you would have to want to use the Appllo for other applications. For my DAW Cubase it works perfectly and I only use it for that reason along with great near zero latency . I don't know why anyone would want to use WDM with the Apollo but I can see why he is frustrated

Richard. I’m getting the same digital distortion he demonstrated using Cubase with windows 10. Can you share any tips? I know this can work.
