I think some of the ELS crew called this on into PD. Most normal people would look at the very dangerous track condition and wonder why it was not fixed. If I'm a part of this train crew I would be sick and tired of constant derailments and breakdowns. If that guy was so concerned about his cars derailing and dangerous contents he would stop sending them over this half breed railroad. It doesn't take a genius to see why they have derailments and it's not you Jason.

Mike is going to get the railroad a lot of attention they don't need. Derailments are serious they indicate a problem. No matter what caused the derailment it has to be corrected. Mike keeps running his mouth and he will force NTSB to get involved. ELS needs that like they need more bad track.

My thoughts exactly, I wonder how many times Jason's films have shown many broken rules / or missed standards . I would think as many viewers he has, that if his film shows some railroad employee on Friday not wearing a reflective vest osha may call on Monday chewing out a supervisor . Or maybe the horn did not sound as the locomotive was put into reverse . Another call from some one chewing out the railroad admin. While I believe Jason is doing nothing wrong. I also , believe the railroad would like him not to film where the railroad could get away with more infractions . Also, wondering if Mike, gets the NTSB involved there would be major money spent repairing the infrastructure of this railroad . Meaning mike's company gets money to repair this railroad . So mike may want to bring attention to this railroad .

Derailing a train is a violation of interstate commerce as I have mentioned previously. And carries some serious penalties. Hopefully, the FBI, the NTSB, or the Department of Transportation is reaching out to him to provide evidence of his accusations. Jason, you can also report him to those same authorities and force him to provide substance to his comments.

For eight years in the seventies. I had to cross the Rock Island to go anywhere. As time went on, they essentially quit maintenance of way. They were on the verge of bankruptcy and their trains were limited to 5 mph and they still fell off the track. Usually, it was something like your video and just a few cars were involved, but one night they had a big one in a town called Alma, Kansas. Don't know how fast they were going, but there were quite a few cars laying split open and mangled, The amazing thing was how fast the salvors showed up with dozers, powerful lights and crews of people retrieving the freight they had bid on. At that point in history, the Rock Island Line was not such a mighty good road. Eventually, the Cotton Belt bought the Rock Island, then was itself swallowed up by the UP. They did come in to replace the rickety rail with welded rail.

I spent 30 years maintaining the Permanent Way on Railways in the UK and I can tell you that I have seldom seen rail vehicles swaying as badly as those shots on your video. The track must be in a dreadful condition to make the cars rock and roll like that. It suggests to me that there must be some real slack spots under the ties first under one rail and then under the other. We would have called that a twist fault and that would be a red card job for immediate repair as it is the most common reason for trains to derail and extremely dangerous. As you can see from the video it causes cars to pitch from side to side and sets up a rocking motion that can easily throw them off the road. It's bad enough when the track drops on both sides and cars bounce up and down on their springs, but when there's a twist fault they often just bounce the flange over the rail, sometimes with disastrous results. Cause is almost always down to lack of maintenance and /or failure to carry out proper track inspections. Over here the Railway Inspectorate lay down the required intervals between inspections by a qualified track patrolman, which used to be carried out on foot, but these days a track inspection machine will often be used which identifies all defects and their position and severity.
@royreynolds1082 жыл бұрын
The joints in the UK tracks are opposite each other while the joints are staggard over here. This is where the rocking and harmonic motion come from. The problem is most acute between about 10 to 20 mph unless the train is accelerating or braking because the length of the rails and distance between the trucks causes harmonic motion at speeds of between 10 to 20 mph. The wheel and axle loads are different also.
@rodsmith39112 жыл бұрын
@@royreynolds108 Yes, I understand the joint problem as the Midland Railway here used staggered joints too. It's not just the joint but the fact that a lot of the joints are dropped due to lack of maintenance which gives rise to twist faults that would be rare in the UK though they still occur. The rocking is started by the dropped joint and exacerbated by the following joint on the opposite rail. Together with the boubcing of the springs in the truck it will cause an oscillation to begin which gets amplified by each successive joint. If the road is really bad and most joints are dropped it will definitely cause simple harmonic motion if the speed is right. About 35 years ago we had a similar problem with some long wheelbase 4 wheel ferry vans which kept derailing and that was due to a similar combination of track joints and springing on the vehicle causing them to be unstable at certain speeds. Despite a lot of alterations to the springing they were limited to lower speeds and had a very short lifespan. Continuous welded rail seems to have answered many of these problems but it still requires a high level of maintenance to prevent mishaps! There seem to be a lot of minor lines which run on poor track and rely on low speeds to continue running which I suppose is due to the cost of repairs to trackwork being seen as something that can be put off until tomorrow. A sad reflection on modern life. We aren't looking after the heritage that those who invested in the railways and got them built for future generations to benefit from entrusted us with.
@patrickomahoney36302 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jason, catching that harmonic rolling is really helpful for general vibration engineering also. I saw two modes of oscillation, back-and-forth transversely and a wave along the train longitudinally. The end car got especially thrown around, a 'crack-the-whip' phenomenon.

Jason, it looks like another case of railroad employees failing to do their job, and when all hell breaks loose, they point fingers at the railfans. This is the reason that Summit at Cajon Pass was permanently closed and fenced off from the public, because in 1994 a Santa Fe employee failed to set the hand brake on a set of helper locomotives and they drifted down into the path of an oncoming train. The facts never came into play on that one, but railfans caught hell for being anywhere near there. They still have Wackenhut and Trans West security guarding the area now. T

I guess I should be glad there is no track within a mile of my house. The closest track was removed over 30 years ago to make the crossing smooth for SC 274, now a 4 lane highway. The railroad leads to the Nuclear Station and May have deteriorated. I won’t check it because if I do I’ll be accused of damaging it and it will be needed if any major equipment like a reactor or steam generator must be replaced.

If the ELS 500 and 501 were consisted together it would be impossible for the 500 to get across the gap and back on the rail while the 501 was on the ground. I have seen rail turn over where the spikes are loose due to rotten ties. And some times the engine and a few cars could make it over the bad spot before the rail turns over.

If the railroad believes that track maintained to class 1 standards (at best) is satisfactory and a sub contractor that is paid for maintenance of that track (which is in dire need of it ) is not doing that, perhaps the subcontractor or even the railroad it self is looking for a scapegoat instead of taking responsibility for the poor maintenance of the track. If the state owns the track that raises new questions .When was the last time a real defect inspection was done on that line. I have a feeling its long overdue especially when hzmat is involved.

@stevewilson8328 I was referring to the FRA classification for track quality. I doubt that this track is maintained to a class 3 (40mph freight/60mph passenger speed limit). Railroad with bad track? Sounds like the Rock Island before it was revived in Mississippi. They are repairing their track and upgrading to steel ties as it is still poor in some places but not as bad as this! The new Rock Island only has a little over 60 miles of track, has less customers (at the moment) and they are financially stable! ELS doesn’t have an excuse for bad track, I think something is going on behind the scenes.

The sheriff who said you stick your camera in people's businesses should have stayed neutral in that conversation and should have been a little more professional instead of appeasing the complainant. What you're doing is not much different that what others have done for decades. You're documenting life happening. My grandpa took pictures of trains, construction projects, fairs, church socials, etc. Itself just there was no KZbin internet back then. And what your doing is like freelance journalism/entertainment. My opinion is they don't like you making money by filming them. But, it's KZbin that has enabled people to make money in such a way. P.S. ... the railroad should use the derailment videos as an after action review to better understand what went wrong and how to improve. (Yes, obviously the tracks need to be in better shape, but there's always something to learn from and gain from the video capture).
@Andrew-ep4kw2 жыл бұрын
The "removed a bit of rail" would be hilarious if the police didn't get involved. The section of track wasn't part of a junction, so the rail pieces would have been pretty long. That means Jason would have had to pull all the spikes securing the rail to the ties, single-handedly lift the rail up and then move it to somewhere the engineer couldn't see, then disguise the gap to look like a rail. Even if that's believable (which it is not!) then the crew of the train would have to re-rail the train without noticing the missing rail. Also, why did a bunch of cars pass over the "gap" in the rail and only the last car derailed the second time? This make about as much sense as a flat earth theory.
@michaelmorgan78932 жыл бұрын
Does this Mike dude realize how heavy a section of rail weighs? Or how much time it would take to manually pull enough spikes to even begin to lift the end of it? I've seen railroad men lift rail, and there must be ten or twelve men lifting together in order to move it. On its face, Mike's accusations are preposterous.

The crew members must have to make a poo poo stop every couple of miles or so. I've worked for two short lines during slow work periods with Con-Rail. Their tracks were not as bad as I viewed in your videos. New ties, ballast, alignment, and surfacing would curtail the harmonic rocking. They are using some heavy power that puts a pounding on these rails. The rails only appear to be 90 or 100 lb at the best. If I were the conductor and engineer I would seek employment with a better carrier or they might be qualified to do so. There are a lot of low joints which will cause rocking. So much for rule S, safety is of the utmost importance. I'm viewing from Hackettstown, NJ a stone's throw from the NJT line.

We then started seeing K & O but its not only Track that needs to be kept up and you being a Railfan like me you know that Engines & Rollinstock have to in good shape to haul heavy loads I'd say those timber cars where over loaded so was that centerbeam t00 Damn much to handle the load under the conditions & Track it was Traveling & the Railroad or shipper should knew that from the..Start, putting a bandage on something that's just gonna fester won't find good results.. Let me tell ya Story back a few when my pop was hauling Steaks & Beer we hauled a load to Louville Kentucky we went over the Ohio River Double Decker Bridge 100 ft I'd say above the Water scared poo pa out of both of us but seen some of the most beautiful Kentucky Horse Ranches layed on our Eyes we delivered meats to Piggly Wigglies Meat warehouse this was the Weekend of the Kentucky Derby.. we dropped the load and headed to the North side of Louisville where Jack Daniel's, Markers Mark & Jim Beam had there werehouses.. at one of them we had to wait to catch a Door while waiting we talked to fellow Trucker he was owner operator before that he worked for the Government hauling heavy equipment on this one trip going through Illinois he was Driving he did NOT have to stop at the Scales because it was a Government load but he was Waived in as he pulled near the scale he stopped the scale operator said what the whoo are ya doin' Boy he said I'm stopping here to let you know this is a Government load & the load is too heavy to scale the operator of the Scale said horse ---- scale this Damn thing the Driver said before I do I'm calling my Boss & he's gonna call his boss and that guy is gonna call the Receiver of the load the US Government you might get a phone call fairly soon. So he did but he ignored all parties said his boss expect no less than weighing the load.. So the Driver we was talking too said he drove onto the Scale.. And the Scale collapsed under the Weight..a few hours the parties of the Gargo showed up so did the Scale operator's boss and by the End of the Day. The Scale Operator was fired the Scale lost Revinew & had to be shut down so a Crain could come in to lift the Cargo & the Flatbed off the scale platform it the scale platform had to lifted out and replaced with a new platform it then had to be Calibrated & New Scale operator's where then Hired the driver found this out by his Boss at the Time.. The Moral of this story Listen Well to one's that might just know more about what there hauling than what you think you do.. Take Care Jason thumbs 👍 up all the way Brother Railfan onward.. Allen

Really looks like a well maintained railroad. How often have you seen ballast leveling or track alignment being done? Not exactly a high traffic line. I don't know, but are railroads regulated as to equipment maintenance and upkeep? I know I've seen hazardous materials cars in your videos on those rails, let alone Mike mentioning them in his infamous phone call.

Gotta have a lot to lift a section of rail by yourself. SMH

I saw the video yesterday and it was eye opening. If Mike is afraid one or more of his cars are going to derail, or in railroad parlance, " go on the ground", then he should put some pressure on E&LS to fix the damn rails,, instead of trying to fALSELY blame you for a serious crime! If I had the money I'd give it to you so you could hire a damn good lawyer and go after him.

I just love your channel. Do you know how 501 derailed? How long was the line down? Were the rails torn up by the derailment? Keep posting, I'll keep watching.

It looks like Mike has suffered the horrific fate of vanishing up his own anoos. What a terrible end!!

There sure out to get you . In my opinion you have done nothing wrong . If they would put a little money in there rail system they would have less problems

IF you know who is saying that you derailed the train intentionally, you likely have a slander case to go after him, for defaming you, and then there is the little issue called filing a false police report, which in many states is a felony! Get the bastard!
