Great review mate! Totally agree on the right tool for the job. I loved the 6KFF in NYC recently, shooting open gate and being able to basically look like a photographer was great. I agree also about the lack of ProRes as well and the need for a stronger power delivery port. Beautiful shots as well. By the way I loved the shots you got with the 35mm the most. That one of Taylor at sunset is insane 🔥

I have been eyeing this camera but am really concerned about shadows not being as clean as BMPCC. That's the biggest strength of BMPCC for me. Wondering if it's something they can fix in a firmware update or a hardware limitation that we are stuck with. Later case would be a huge bummer.

@@Milan-cf1xe Rolling Shutter for handheld is a real problem if shooting in Open Gate and Full Frame (I'm not talking about tripod fast pan / youtube test, but real hand held footage with a 70mm + lens). Dual iso is a joke (1250 iso max on that camera). I mean for the price point, it's incredible, but I would save a bit more to choose something else.

Totally agree with you on the ports. It would benefit all manufacturers to have more premium ports: sdi instead of hdmi, locking power connectors etc. especially if they are labeling it ‘cine’ you would expect it to fit in the demands of those types of crews. Braw only doesn’t make sense either. I’ll say it again footage is beautiful. I assume you got hired by the company hosting the contest to film and follow your subject. If so, that’s a killer gig man. It seems like the mavo wouldn’t be that much larger but would retain more run n gun benefits? Maybe it was the power consumption you were considering. But the power cable issue you had is why I would normally pick a cam with an integrated power distro. Love this video man, felt like I was on the job with ya. Looking forward to more content from ya. I’m in fl too, trying to put together a filmmaker meetup on the west side. I’ll let you know if it happens. Would love to have you there.

I'm glad you made this video, the Blackmagic cameras are phenomenal, but yes, they're made for people that work by themselves, are REALLY good at communicating & willing to work with BRAW (which is not the standard) or just getting into filmmaking. The ports are absolutely the thing BMD must change the design and durability of, a consistent worry when having used Blackmagic cameras for years. Transcode for this project? I realize for same day handoff you often need a camera capable of shooting ProRes, but in this case you would have had proxy files to hand off for editing, then pull the timeline into Resolve on your end for color and final render. Or did you have to turn in all your footage? * The power connection is a little weird and it can feel flimsy, but at the same time that’s a cable I keep backups for when on set or traveling. Nevertheless it shouldn’t eat the external battery. Once the internal battery is topped off it’s not drawing power. I use v-mounts with my CC and I don’t notice any unusual battery drain. I wonder if your external battery has a bad cell? Anyway, would a sturdier power attachment feel better? Probably, but a proper locking lemo connector will stick out a long way and be even more prone to snagging and damage. SDI? That would probably turn off entry level buyers. * At the same time, DR especially at ISO3200 does concern me. It seems like 1250 is the clean alternative ISO instead of 3200. Might BM be able to address this in firmware? I’m not sure, but if not then this camera will be limited to fairly controlled lighting situations.

@CineDailies10 ай бұрын
Thanks man! 3200 is the second native ISO so it actually should perform better than 1250 but sadly that wasn't the case
@NeonCucumber10 ай бұрын
Sooo I've been working with BM support on this issue. It appears they define the native ISO not as the actual hardware natives - but instead the ISO's at which the stops above/below middle gray are most equal. I guess they define native as their own thing so it's really confusing for the consumers. Hopefully they can fix this with a firmware update... maybe they are over amplifying at 3200... noise there and even at 1250 is really high. CineD just did their tests on the FF and specifically said to avoid the second natives. Their assessment (direct quote): "The higher native ISO is sort of a problem child; I would stay away from it if possible."@@CineDailies

Would it be possible for you to take some of your low light footage from this camera and show noise reduction process with a screenshare type video and maybe using something like neat? I know you showed post pre and post NR but given the report from CineD I think a video like that would do well and also be very helpful to the community. Would like to see if can trust the camera with a good NR routine. As of now it's defective compared to the information posted by BM. Their marketing on this camera pushed low light... this can be seen on their product page for this item. Please make the NR video if possible. Maybe after NR this performs better than the 6k pro with final image who knows. The daylight shots are nice. Sending positive vibes :)@@CineDailies

Great video! I loved seeing your footage! Just a question - if you're handing it off to a professional editor why would BRAW be an issue? If they're not using Resolve, you just download a plugin for other NLEs. I edit BRAW in premiere with no issues. If I'm editing in Avid Media Composer, I transcode the footage anyway. I can't image a professional editor having an issue with raw footage, especially if they're used to cinema camera footage where they would be processing Red and Arri Raw files.

As for the noise, you should be exposing for max detail retention (and put your faith in the BRAW) even if it looks overexposed on your Film/Video preview on camera. Especially easy if you can use zebras or waveforms, if not you can try trial and error. It's something blackmagic did not make clear but people experienced with the camera recommend. Just dont overdo it and clip your highlights, as long as your zebras are small you should be good.

Just a quick correction, at 16:50 you say 'Canon Batteries' they are in fact Sony NPF batteries the canon ones were truely atrocious the sony upgrade helped that marginally but the batter grip for the pocket series also makes it SOOOO much better and uses no ports but the pins on the bottom of the body you wouldn't have had that issue, also hot swap-able, I find that port is only best used as AC power not for external use, you don't have any motors or an external motor. I would bet you would have had a better time with the BlackMagic battery grip.
@CineDailies10 ай бұрын
Haha the Sony NPFS Arent any better lol the camera DRINKS batteries like sodas. I can't stand the battery grip, it's flimsy at best. It makes the rig even more awkward. It's not the solution for the port issue in my opinion. But in glad it's working for you
@JarredCordova10 ай бұрын
@@CineDailies Well when you take the old canon 1D body that it emulates, vs a rigged out wannabe box camera, AND the fact you can get an almost 50% power density increase compared to the canon lpe6 batteries. The battery grip is platic and sure flimsy could be a word to describe it, but you then put a cage around the whole thing, you loose the snag prone cables and the cable you used ended up becoming damaged. It's only a solution for the situation you were in. My experience is in being a Union professional Assistant camera so the guy building big camera rigs, I'm always looking to lose wires not add more, ANYTIME anyone asks me about the pocket series I say it is meant to be bare bones, now with the view finder it is a full blown DSLR form factor camera. curious to know your thoughts on this as I havent seen footage of it anywhere yet, how do think this camera would fair covering a basketball game in open gate?
@CineDailies9 ай бұрын
Not in open gate. Rolling shutter will be a nightmare and storage would fill up fast.

I noticed you don't have a power cable clamp has that been an issue with the camera turning on and off ?
@CineDailies10 ай бұрын
I thought the same thing, but that wasn't the issue.

Quick question is there anyway you can do a video on how you did your intro? Or point me to a video that breaks it down. I love the simplicity of it and was looking to do this for my logo intro to add to videos

Hi, what aspect of the intro are you referring to? You mean the logo?
@stayjustful10 ай бұрын
@@CineDailies they way your logo moves. I was wondering was it a mask or some kind of after effects trick

I have been eyeing this camera but am really concerned about shadows not being as clean as BMPCC. That's the biggest strength of BMPCC for me. Wondering if it's something they can fix in a firmware update or a hardware limitation that we are stuck with. Later case would be a huge bummer.

Thanks for the review, i think this camera has minimal compromises for the price and overall package its offering. Ill take one!

I was waiting to hear your thoughts on the 6k FF. Whether to get the 6k pro or the 6k ff, still unclear which one to choose 🤣 Shots were beautiful and the way how you structured the review into the vlog was also nice :)

I really wanted to like the blackmagic system. I circled back to buy one after I waited forever through Panasonic tape options a million years ago through to waiting a million more years for the red scarlet under $1000.00 camera never happened.. then i was scared away from cluttered menu systems of dslr and the mess of hybrid mirrorless. The actual pocket camera was awesomeness but then storage and power musings led me away from them. The GFX100 was beautifull for still image capture but I was horried by moving footage that was a nice and colourful, crisp, wobbly, gelatinous mess 😢😅 I wanted to love the BM 6k but the form factor and ports as well as power options and its again its really awkward shape pushed me toward fx3 or red komodo choices. For first the R3D and the tiny form factor, I went with the red. Its fantastic how the simple 4×4 form factor can lead to endless small or large rig options. I love having multiple screens any size with wireless control and though si shoot 100% raw, the compressed options are there with prores. I like your footage but for the cost, having to worry about bent little adapter cables and

Hey good afternoon. found this video searching for compatibility with the 6k full frame and Athena lenses . what adapter do I need before I buy the nice Athena cine lenses ?
@CineDailies6 ай бұрын
The PL to L mount. Use Metabones or the Nisi PL adapter
@Jeff_Lathrop4 ай бұрын
Or buy them in L mount!

That nice pattern comes from the external battery. The power frequency is very inconsistent.
