I was Nikon user had few D800's and I switched to a6500, I don't have problems with overheating at all, I shoot 4K and I am using it as my main camera for video. Nevere had a single issue. I agree with Scott regarding battery life but I have few third party batteries which work amazing. They charge fast and I also have car charger. So no worries with Sony it is pocket rocket workhorse.

Hey Scott great vid, I expect you have since discovered this but the Small HD when mounted at the bottom of the Crane, can simply be mounted upside down on its supplied bracket which means the output cord is now on the top right of the monitor making the cord length just perfect . I have two SmallHD's and have them both flipped on my two Crane/Sony Cam combos.

I found these little 4,000 mAh usb rechargeable batteries branded JW, and one of those plugged in to the a6500’s usb charging port runs for hours. If you have all that other stuff bolted on top of the camera anyway, it’s a no-brainer, but even if not it still makes sense. Yeah, but don’t use this camera for 2hr, non-stop interviews. Get a video camera for that. The a6500 makes a great companion to the FS5 or FS7, if you’re an actual video shooter.

Hey man great review ! But I’m pretty sure the 18-105 isn’t cropped. I have the same setup and found that the focal length on the apsc sonys is actually 18-105 :)
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
It’s cropped if you’re putting it on a crop sensor body.
@vyshnav50136 жыл бұрын
Scott McKenna yes when you put FE lenses on a cropped sensor body you need to compensate for the crop factor. This lens, according to Sony should give a 18-105 mm equivalent on a cropped sensor body. I might be wrong but that’s what I experienced. They even classify it as an “APS-C lens” on the brochure I have. Also I compared it to a canon 18mm and I think it does give an 18mm image. That’s just my comparison :). I do not have a full frame camera body to test it out but again I might be wrong .

Hello there, Scott! I've stumbled upon a pretty rough issue to deal with, especially when I'm just about to shoot my first A6500+GH5 combo wedding ceremony. The problem appears after about 15-20 minutes of recording with my A6500 (with the dummy battery inside, connected to a powerbank) - an orange thermometer icon appears on screen and shortly after the camera turns off, along with an overheating warning. Help! What should I do to solve that one out? :O

But it seems that you are in focus all the time. About the same happens on a6500 on autofocus at least at 18-105. Background goes back and forth but the subject is in focus.
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
It usually happens on the A6500 if you have the autofocus settings on fast. Don’t have them on fast. The autofocus is so good on the A6500 that fast isn’t necessary. Just do it on normal speed.

the A6500 is an aps-c sensor, meaning it’s a 1.5x crop. Meaning it’s more like a 27-150. That’s how the crop factor works.

Scott McKenna oh! I was under the impression the 18-105 was a crop sensor lens too!
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
It’s an aps-c based lens meaning you CANT use it on full frame without vignetting. BUT, a crop factor still applies to it on a crop lens.

What would you recommend as an A cam alternative? Have been considering this camera for an upcoming documentary shoot, where I'll be covering pretty packed days similar to your wedding shoot.

a600 is great for the price.

hey, about powering the cam with an powerbank... does the batterie has to be IN the camera to use the powerbank or can i power the Cam without the batterie inside the camera?!
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be in the camera, but I highly suggest keeping one in because IF the power bank fails or the cable gets disconnected, the camera will instantly turn off which you don't want it to do. If there is a battery in it, it'll at least keep working.
@Kero_816 жыл бұрын
thats a very good point, thanky for that! =) its really nice that i can use a powerbank to power the camera. i will be filming 99% of the time outdoor, so best thing a new camera can have. the only thing that keeps me from buying now is the overheating problem. i have to get more infos about this before i decide to buy or not.
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
If you're shooting 99% outdoors, I would not recommend a Sony at all. Just being honest.
@Kero_816 жыл бұрын
Scott McKenna oh okay, thats interesting. could you explain why?
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
You just explained it yourself. They aren't reliable and they have overheating issues.

I forget. Probably a GH5

"Omg I'm such a GH5 fanboy.. I sold all my Canons and Sonys because they are all CRAP, and will only use GH5 which is the best camera in the world !!!" .. 5 months later he films a full wedding only with Sony =)))
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
Yes, for a a test and to showcase that you don't always need more expensive gear. Watch other videos and you'll quickly see I didn't keep any of that gear, and I still have and use the GH5's for everything

Not good enough to be used for a main camera? That means it’s not good enough to use period....I’m taking mine back!!
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
Just not reliable enough for a main camera. Quality is fine, but not reliability.
@theharlemword30776 жыл бұрын
Wondering should i keep it. I’m mainly a canon 6DMkII shooter. Bought it to use the 120 FPS video and to give Sony a try. When you say reliable....it’s like saying “yeah the car is nice but it may break down during a road trip. “
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
Exactly how I think of a lot of Sonys. Incredible cameras with incredible capability but if you’re shooting certain types of work and shooting for long periods of time, you have to hope it keeps working.
@motaasefam6 жыл бұрын
Why don't you use Canon? because of its awesome video AF and Canon's AF is better than sony.

So many shortcommings to overcome. Better get a c100m2 instead of building a "Transformers" camera.

Agreed. That's why I don't use the a6500's any more.

Hey Scott, Ive had the exact gimbal setup (V1 Crane only difference) for a while myself, I love it but just a suggestion. pick up this acc www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RTBWHGI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Mounted on handle bars and it allows you to zoom in and out using your thumb. Works great!

Not for video.

Its is better for video as well, and much better for stills. I just got the camera. However you may not want to invest, thats another issue.

if you got an a6500 for video, theres no reason to not get an a7r3 for video...

SerenityPhotos its not any better?
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
+Kiywii just because specs show you something doesn't mean it's better. My iPhone shoots 4k 60 and the a6500 shoots 1080 60fps. Doesn't mean the 4k 60 looks better on the iPhone than the a6500. Sensors still matter. A7r2 is full frame.

When using an external monitor with the 6500 it seems like the face detection is dissabled ? How do you work around this ?
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
You’re correct. I don’t work around it. If I need AF in 4K, I don’t use the monitor.
@scottmckenna6 жыл бұрын
ALSO, it only turns off face detection if you're shooting in 4K. Which obviously is the only thing I shoot, but I did notice that if you turn it to 1080, it works. Weird.
@ldgprodukties6 жыл бұрын
When using an atomos 4k recorder you can set the a6500 to hdmi only (4K output sel) and.... face detection is back on...
