I love black and white films even photography. It’s not distracting to look at the pictures. It’s timeless

Beautiful. I am 70 and started my newspaper career in 1970 shooting black and white photos. I now shoot video, but never in B&W. I have a new Lumix G9II that has a “Leica Monochrome mode”. I plan to shoot a video using only that mode in the next month. I live out where food is grown and raised, so no city to film. I am truly looking forward to doing this and I have you to thank. Great job and I’m grateful. Jim in Oregon

Really love your channel, this was the video which I watched as I wanted to get some insight on black and white filmmaking, but all the other stuff are so good, please make more filmmaking explainer lectures, love them.

Really nice and yeah, color can sometimes be a distraction from other things like you mentioned, composition, contrast, textures, shapes and its a beautiful experience. I would add that shooting in black and white, digital and film, and with color filters, is good experimentation, as using Red filter for example will give different exposures. Funny, that earlier I was just thinking of these things and now I came across this video on the feed. For film, if you can shoot some Super8 (because its cheap), you get these different type of black and white rolls, Double X, Tri-X and others, for different looks, in terms of texture intensity, contrast, exposure curve, dynamic range and all, so instead of looking at it as what gets "better" results, we go into every result as its individual style and use it for related subjects for our story and the kind of world and its mood we are trying to show. Ive only shot Tri-X and it has more grain than Double X as ive heard, so a lot of people prefer Double for the details and clean look but I really liked what Tri X gave me, with bright areas mostly in the light greys and blacks in dark greys, really gorgeous. For Digital, shooting with a black and white filter as you mentioned, is beautiful to see in black and white before taking the photos. Just taking away the distraction of colors can get us into dark and light. I think in design class, we learned to design logos using colors thinking of how it would look in black and white ads/prints, so choosing the colors was very important for the contrast and separation they'd bring to black and white conversions. Sorry for long message.

Peace Blessings to you, your family as well as team. I definitely digging your style...crazy dope. My question...did you shoot this in black and white in slog 3 then convert it to black and white? Or did you use the creative bw pp (im thinking you probably did not use the bw pp). I looking to use s-cinetone then convert it to black and white for the contrast of s-cinetone. Not sure if it will look the the way I want it to....

What camera do you use for filming in black and white? And also do you put black and white on the settings on the camera or after in your editing program?

Duh! How old is everyone here? It took the digital looking black and white of The Lighthouse for you to realize that black and white films could be gorgeous and essential? How about watching The Long Voyage home by John Ford and filmed by Gregg Toland for starters?

please take it as constructive criticism when i say that you ruined beautifully framed shots with an overkill of digital grain effect. entirely my opinion.
