I know you said not to view it as a cheat code, but in a way I think it is. By just focusing on value (shades of Black, Grey, and White) your gonna get better at lighting quicker because there is no distraction of color. In drawing and painting, many composition studies are done in B&W. By focusing on B&W, you’ll focus more on composition too. You’re stripping movies down to their essential elements before adding another dimension, the dimension of color. So…yeah! Make a color copy of your movie, and then take a copy of the original ungraded version into your CC software, desaturate and play with the values all you want!

I just don't want people to rely on it! It's a great tool if you need to get out of a sticky situation, but just saying you'll throw a B&W lut on it kind of destroys all meaning behind using it. I agree it's a way to get quicker lighting though, and it's a great way to focus more on everything else.

One if the best uses of black and white for me is David Lynch's use of it in Twin Peaks: The Return and Alfonso Cuaron in Roma (maybe my favorite film of 2018)

Great commentary. It was actually "The Lighthouse" that inspired me to think about shooting in black and white. I had thought about it before. But, seeing the power of black and white in that movie, along with the performances, I felt it may well suit a short film I'm developing right now. I've completed the script for a short sci-fi film. And after watching this video, I feel that the premise and mood of the sci-fi short story would lend itself well to black and white imagery. Viewing the story from this perspective I believe will help me develop the imagery to tell the story in an effective way. I honestly did not think about shooting this script in black and white until now. So, thank you for the inspiration.

Thanks! The Lighthouse definitely got me interested in experimenting with it more, but it has to be Ed Wood that really sparked that interest for me. Ah, glad the video was of help! Good luck on the shoot :)

@@AngusDaviesDP Oh yea. The Ed Wood film looked good, too. I want to start thinking about more stories for black and white. It really is an underused medium.

I recently watched the 2014 film Nightcrawler with the saturation turned right down. Highly recommended! Really adds to the Neo Nior elements.

I have always found Black and White to be interesting. Whenever I am out clicking pictures I always create a black and white copy of the same just to know what stands out and what's the differences between them. I feel like black and white provides a certain depth in an image which can be subjective to an individual's perception. And as always , a great video.

I'll have to start doing that! At the moment I only ever create one of each, either it's a colour photo or a b&w one, but I love the sound of this :) Thanks!

Thanks for the video Angus. Now I just need to get off my butt and shoot. Course editing is my biggest hurdle.

I have released my short both in colour and black and white. One viewer told me he actually preferred the b/w version, because it's a kind of dark, Noir type plot. I have yet to have the guts to shoot in b/w from scratch.

It is still cheaper to film in b&w, also in digital because you don't have to think about the color of the lights you are using/mixing. Also the color grading process will be much simpler at the end.

The Shape of Water looks much better in colour, as does Parasite. Don't get me wrong, I love black and white; Roma and The Lighthouse look amazing
