He basically had to convince himself he was in that situation already, not going in as an actor Robert to play Tony, a rich genius, but that he -was- this rich genius. That Tony was him already. He turned up in a beat up old car with the best suit he could find but when asked how he got there he said a fleet of Rolls Royce. That's why the two are so flawless and seem interchangeable, he really blended the line with the role and it's so iconic.
