Oh man, I remember unironically loving this movie when I saw it with friends in theatres. The unashamed 'Film Noir Silent Film, but in colour and with sound' retro-future vibe was just so idiosyncratic and unlike anything else in theatres at the time it didn't matter that the movie itself wasn't actually that good. We all loved it for being ambitiously bizarre, like they wanted to make _The Rocketeer_ by way of Max Fleischer's _Superman_ cartoons but couldn't get the licensing so they just made their own version and went ham with it.

Don't you just love it when a group of gen-xyz sit around and bad mouth a movie that's 110% better than their clothes and haircuts. This genre was a norm and delightful to those of us that grew up and watched these movies. I lost interest in Star Wars midway through the first 30 minutes. Granted, one thing they agreed on was not caring to talk about someone's pregnancy of one of these new gen potatoes. What I find hard to believe, WTF would subscribe to their Patreon page? They forget that the movie is not reality based, it's fictional, try to get that through your cognition.

The better story is the making of Sky Captain. Fresh out of film school Kerry Conran with his brother continue working on this project that eventually takes on a life of it’s own and devours him. A stroke of luck sees the film picked up by a producer. Suddenly Kerry's student film project has three ‘A’ list film stars and the backing of a major studio, but only if Kerry himself directs it. He says his first instinct was to run, screaming as far away as possible. The cast take him under their wing and help him to complete his dream.

I spent much of my misspent youth at the Musee du Cinema in Brussels. I unironically love this movie because it reminds me of sitting in the dark watching some obscure film that I hadn't heard of before and haven't seen since. Sin City was much later.
@PrimevilKneivel
@PrimevilKneivel 2 жыл бұрын
@@fabrisseterbrugghe8567 Sin City was made by someone who had more experience and therefore understood the medium better. It's tricky to put live action actors in a fully/mostly virtual world. There are so many things that need to planned for, and those plans need to be flexible because sometimes it just doesn't look right when you have everyone in front of the camera. That's when you are spending $1000's pre minute and you need to make quick decisions. Experience will help you know when you can "fix it in post". Sky Captain was pushing the boundaries. As a working VFX artist at the time, I was impressed with what they were attempting, but I didn't expect them to succeed. Everything I read about the movie gave me the impression they had learned what was possible with VFX, but didn't really understand how difficult it is. It's hard. Watch any major VFX film's credit roll all the way through and try to count how many VFX artists there are spread across multiple studios. As as professional VFX artist I think it's the least important aspect of filmmaking. Don't ever use it as a reason to not like a movie.

The movie was originally a short film on an apple computer. It was never meant to be a big movie but got picked up and expanded upon until it became this incredible classic. (Haven’t watched the full review…but to me it is a classic) as the movie went on they got a bigger and bigger budget and the graphics got better.

I think the reason it's such a busy movie is that it's trying to capture the plot and feel of an entire serial, which is normally 12 to 15 20-minute chapters, into like 2 hours. I also think they do explain the elephant right? All the animals in the ark are miniturized so they can fit them all. I think? It has been a while.

I have a soft nostalgic spot in my heart for Sky Captain cause I think I was about the right age (13) when it came out in 2004. It bridged the gap between Saturday morning cartoons I grew up with and classic Hollywood adventures I was discovering. It felt more mature than The Incredibles and was like a trailblazer in the use of blue screen, CGI heavy movies that came out in the 00s & beyond. I appreciated it for its sci-fi story at the time of release but now appreciate it for its visual references to 30s & 40s stories of various genres.

I'm fairly certain the heavy handed "color grade" was to cover the difficulty of chromakeying every shot. That was the deal when it came out, it was all green screen and a small crew making a virtual world. I do this same thing everyday and it's easy to underestimate how difficult it is. They started with this unreal visual style, and when the keys were too hard to clean they hid it in shadows and highlights.

the HPL historical society did adapt call of cthulhu and the whisperer in darkness as pastiche black and white (and even silent film in the case of CoC) movies. I haven't watched them though so I don't know how successful they were. It was in the 2000's though so I'm quite scared at the level of amateurishness this might entail.
@CaesiusX
@CaesiusX 2 жыл бұрын
@@maximeteppe7627 As you should be, IMO.😏 I couldn't get through them the first time. One reason being, as you note, the time period in which they were attempted. *It shows.* But I also have an aversion to productions which scream _"fan film!"_ Particularly in the acting department. I did watch 2001's _"Dagon"_ all the way through. While I recall it had decent production value, I don't remember much else about it.🤷🏼‍♂️ 2005's _"The Call of Cthulhu"_ was a 46 minute silent film. At times I feel they came close to making it seem like a proper silent era film. Unfortunately, much of it still had a modern feel, given how it was shot and processed, as well as the use of young actors trying to look older. 2011's _"Whisperer in the Darkness"_ was a noble attempt, but IMO their use of black and white wasn't enough. It still looked too modern. Too fan-filmy. The aforementioned silent version of _"The Call of Cthulhu"_ did a better job of making it seem more like a period film. But that is just my take. Ultimately, I feel if they were made more like _"Sky Captain and the Something Something,"_ the strong comparisons to the classic films they tried to emulate wouldn't occur as much. I haven't seen these in a while, but recently added them to my video library (along with the anthology film, _"Necronomicon,"_ from 1993), as I plan on watching them again soon. I feel I should at least watch them in full. Btw, there's a 2007 [Japanese?] anthology film on KZbin¹ called _"H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror and Other Stories."_ Three stories are brought to life by animated clay puppets and miniatures. I only just discovered it as I was getting the dates for those I mentioned above. Be well! 🙋🏼‍♂️ ··•✺•·· ¹ ─ Uploaded by YT Channel: _Alae Mortis_

The missing piece of this puzzle is that the film was bigger and better than it had any right to be. Originally, the film was the product of one creator, Kerry Conran, who had just made a brilliant, unprecedented short film version on his own all in CGI. Not only did he design, build and animate the whole thing, he even wrote the unique renderer that created the film's soft-focus effect. He was a virtuoso, and the resulting short film was so good, he got the green light to turn it into a feature. But that meant hiring real actors instead of his CGI cartoon characters, which had been the weak point of his original. It also meant taking what had been a pastiche of 1930s pulp tropes and stretching it out to feature length script. And though Conran was brilliant at a huge number of things, he wasn't quite a master screenwriter. So the story became a kind of bare-bones tour of better stories from that bygone era. The cute little homage to those spicy 30s romantic couples like Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert became a thin, underwritten collection of cliches, without enough substance beneath it. In short, the problem of the film is that it was too good to be what it started out as, but not quite good enough to become what they turned it into. I think Conran would have benefitted from a partner who knew better how to make a feature film, who supported his vision and got out of its way, but who could have better picked up where Conran fell short. It's sad, because within this noble failure is the makings of a masterpiece, which we'll never see, unless someone with a vision sees the unrealized potential here and attempts a remake, or maybe a netflix series. I'd watch that.

This was NEVER a BAD movie...but it was an inside homage...a love letter to a type of movie and story that come from a different time. Pulp fiction of the early 20th century is NOT everyone's thing. I love em cause my dad did...early Buck Rogers flicks and old Flash Gordon serials were in theaters when he was a little kid and could spare a nickel. Those were his early inspiration to become a pilot...which, many years later...he did, and flew the rest of his life, both in Air Force and privately. I always regretted he didn't live to see this made...I suspect he and I would have savored it. Alas, I watched it and could only think of him, wide eyed farm kid from the boonies of Michigan, dreaming of flight and heroism. At least he lived those dreams.

I feel like this movie shares some traits with the 1980 Flash Gordon. They are both VERY loving homages to Pulp Era stories and storytelling. If you watch them without any affection for the inspiration they feel very disjointed. The thing is that the pulp stories were often hung together with the faintest of stories and the characters were pretty one dimensional archetypes. I dunno if you love the stuff it is very fun, if you don't than you don't get as much out of the experience.

I'm a big fan of this movie. Not generally known is the fact that the opening 10-15 minutes of this film were originally produced as a short film where all of the CGI was basically done a tricked out Mac by the director before anybody knew who he was. (I think it may have been his grad school project?) That's why the first part of the movie in new york looks so diffierent from the second half of the film - a lot of it was re-created from the original short film CGI work with the new A-list actors put into it. This was going to be the guy's big break, but the studio basically didn;t understand that this was supposed to be a ground breaking visual film and instead saw it as an experiment in making an action/FX film for cheap with the new technology they were developing. There were constant money problems, and IIRC the director wound up using his salary to give the budget a boost so that they could make the 2nd half of the film look better? It was a long time ago so I'm having a hard time remembering the details. I remember driving past the warehouse where they had set up the post production facility for this - they put a big Totenkopf symbol on the front. My basic overall recollection was that the studio got cold feet on this once production was underway and then started cutting corners, and then completely lost faith in the project, only put it in limited release for a week or so before pulling it. Such an ambitious project for a then unknown filmmaker, and my hat is forever off to him for really going for it when he had the chance.

Regarding the robots, they're 100% a reference to the 1940s Superman cartoon.

If you want to see what Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow would look like if executed well, I couldn't recommend the following enough: Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. It is a 7 episode anime drawing upon the works of a prominent manga author from the 1950's-1970's (Mitsuteru Yokoyama) and it captures the style and tone of pulpy scifi and adventure with aplomb. There are two English dubs, the newer of the two I wholeheartedly recommend as it captures the delightful (and slightly cheesy) melodrama excellently.

The only thing I remember about Sky Captain when it was being promoted was that they were able to use older footage and recreate Sir Laurence Olivier to be in the movie. There was a lot of debate as to whether or not that was moral to use his image like that without his permission

The whole movie is just a tribute to 1930's-40's serial films, from Commando Cody to Flash Gordon and the likes - the black and white, the setting being a weird 1940's vision of the next ten years, etcetera. Edit: Also, it's basically a shaggy dog story.

As for Brotherhood of the Wolf...more accurately it can be said that it's Soul Calibur: the Movie. Because some parts of it feel like backstory for Soul Calibur characters.

I'm not a Patreon subscriber but PLEASE do Brotherhood of the Wolf PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I've seen all of these movies and Brotherhood is by far the least bad (if memory serves, anyway lol. It's been a minute). Another delightful Deep Dive, always a pleasure - a joy, even. I remember loving the idea of Sky Captain and feeling more than a little put out by its execution. I'm pretty sure the tiny elephant was because all of the animals were being miniaturized so they'd all fit on the ark, by the way.

Never got why people had SUCH a problem with it, it looks like the modern grade version of the serials it was made in homage to. It's like...has no one ever seen old Buck Rogers stuff? This was just Buck Rogers and all its ilk done in 2004.

I 100% REMEMBERED THIS MOVIE BEING IN BLACK AND WHITE. I think my brain rejected it? But I also remember liking it and do *not* remember this being the plot (except the tiny elephant is 10/10, I certainly remember that part). Congrats about the baby!

I watched it last year for the first time and loved it! Style is its substance for sure, but I just love that steampunk noir concept they were going for! There is a video by the Channel called Too Many Tapes who talks about the movie and also made it black and white (his vidoe shows some excerpts). It seems to work even better in black and white!

I have a big big big big bias about this movie because I saw it when I was 12/13. And I still love it because they so clearly had their way too many ideas and they WENT FOR THEM. And a lot of them don't work together but I will always give a movie that takes big wild swings infinitely more credit and respect.

This is the Hindenberg III. NOT the original one that crashed and burned. This movie is set in an alternate timeline: The Nazis didn't come to power and so there was no WWII, and airship travel (with Germany leading the way) became the big thing.

My prime take-away from this movie when I first saw it in the cinema was the intense desire to have Angelina Jolie (in almost the same uniform) play Honor Harrington in a live-action adaption of David Weber's SF series of the same name.
