I've seen this film before. Found it very charming, but I have to agree that this film doesn't feel real. It's like a dream all the way through, impressive things happen but it's all disconnected, nothing feels grounded in reality. So much so that I have a hard time believing in a world that makes stuff up as it goes. The design of the robots as a whole is quite inspiring though, probably why its the one thing I remember from the film the most.
@nealsterling81514 жыл бұрын
I always had the impression that the makers of the movie made all design in the movie look like someone of the 1930 had made them. It's 100% style over substance and obviously not intended to be realistic. As you said the Movie is very dreamlike and i guess thats exactly what the makers where aiming for. But i guess the audience was used or was expecting something different at that time, or just didn't get it...

They were strongly based off the jewellery-stealing robots that Superman fights off in an episode of the 1940s Fleischer Superman series. Yet the robots in that episode, despite actually being created by 1940s artists, had a better design, at least in my opinion. They were about a third of the size, more agile, and flew using retractable propellers.

He may have not pursued the robots because a P40 does not have limitless fuel reserves. Tag along had 95% of the actual information regarding Totenkov. She saved Joe from certain death at the end. The flying carriers were totally unbelievable. I'll give you that. The Empire State Building and the Chrysler build were both supposed to be docking ports for Zeppelins. It was deemed impractical because of air currents at that height. Still it's amazing to see the docking. I love this movie. It is the future from the perspective of someone living in the 30's.

What fails the movie for me is that it was made on the back of the character of Sky Captain alone and ignored everything else. Too much of how great he is and very little payoff. Which accounts for the lack of military presence until the British airforce pops in. Yes he has cool characters like Dex and Charlie to bounce from and that one guy from the mummy. There's nothing to Sky Captain other than his plane and gimmick gadgets. What irks me is that they missed an opportunity to have the cast all together on the adventure and Polly recording the adventures at a distance. Also I was hoping Charlie be his love interest cause Sky Captain and Polly have zero chemistry. And all their relationship amounts to she did this bad thing some odd years ago and he never forgave her. If I recall said bad thing nearly cost him his life and she's the one demanding an apology? Why cause he broke up with her?! And at the end SHE'S the one he ends with?! Good grief. I think the filmmakers underestimated Angelina Jolie's star power and overestimated Gwyneth Paltrow's.
@longtsun82862 жыл бұрын
What Polly did was sabotage Sky Captain's plane so he'll be captured, and Hideki Tojo will be so excited about the news that Polly will be able to photograph Tojo in his pajamas. Sky Captain specifically states he was almost castrated- the Imperial Japanese Army was NOT known for compliance with the Geneva Accords.
@pavelslama55432 жыл бұрын
13:45 And why did he need to keep those enemy planes airborne? If he knows that the planes are receiving a radio message, he can just use his and one other radio antennae to receive those same message, and even if he cannot understand them, he can always at least triangulate the position of the source transmitter. That was a method already known at the time the movie supposedly takes place. Unlike radar for example. Also, that extreme maneuvers he performs with the stupidly heavy P-40 are even less believable than the plane going under water.

I have to admit that I hold this film to my heart as a unique and exciting film for its time, but even while I was watching it first run in the theatre, I was frowning and shaking my head at the missed opportunities. Sky Captain and his mercenary army are close to the DC Blackhawks, and so much of the film just screams pulp adventure...but so many great chances get overlooked by the shaky script and the need to squeeze more stuff into the background, like the Ray Harryhausen references, the Fleischer Superman references, and the riffs on pulp heroes in general. Taking the enthusiasm and love for the golden oldies, and building a solid script and logical progression of story into a new version would make this a wildly entertaining film now, as opposed to a thudding failure back then. I so wanted this to succeed, but it was just too far ahead of its time AND too retro for the age it was released in. Sky Captain deserves another chance.

you say you could remove tagalong blonde and the movie would be unaffected but i think she does have key points in the movie like the scientist at the movie theater (which goes into the robot hangar scene later)and the lab. and for the military at the first part, i don't think a thinly stretched military would be already set up to defend the city after being called when the robots arrive. in reality they would probably just be getting there. and what are the cops suppose to do? nothing? you have to at least try to stop them. the island part i have a theory. a full scale assault might take too long and 2 people are a lot less noticeable than a platoon of people for infiltration. and as for the robots, it's dieselpunk. that tends to have a ton of machines that don't make sense and seem to be powered by an impossible source. a lot of sky captain doesn't make any sense if you analyze every detail but sky captain is a movie you just watch to enjoy.

So in the interwar ww1 ish period there were designs for flying aircraft carriers in the form of lighter than air airships. They could really carry as much as 10 planes from what it looked like on the plans. So it was possible to build these with low fuel cost. Given that right after ww1 actual aircraft carriers were being constructed, these were never built. The concept is cool, but even in ww1 lighter than air ships were basically clay pigeons for by planes (which is why they weren’t used after ww1).

@Deathvalleyherper2 жыл бұрын
If a person who is blind in one eye can pass a driving test why couldn't they be a pilot. Losing an eye forces the other to take on the duties of both, often improving vision and relearning depth perception. I knew a guy who had 20/50 vision before an accident made him blind in his right eye. That was 30 years ago, less than a year later his left eye started improving, since then he has almost 20/20 vision in that eye. The right still works but can really only sense light and dark.
