If Winston wanted Wick dead, he would have shot him in the head. Winston knows all about the tactical lining in Wicks suit. Hell, the tailor is part of the Continental's service. Shooting Wick as he did cemented his renewed loyalty to the High Table in the adjudicators eyes and gives Wick a chance. (Planed / Unplanned)? We all, Winston included, know how hard Wick is to kill and Winston has shown admiration, respect, affection for Wick for all three movies.

Yes. Winston shot him in the bullet proof suit. But he also propelled him off a four story roof top. Only cinematic immunity saved Wick from not dying just from hitting the fire escape railing alone.
@helenl3193
@helenl3193 3 жыл бұрын
@@guyjperson true, but if he'd just shot him and left him on the roof then the others would be able to see that the shots hadn't killed him. Sure, a normal person would be dead from the fall, but John is the undefeated boogeyman, and a fall is less certain to kill him than the shot to the head he'd have gotten if he'd collapsed on the roof. It was the best/only advantage Winston could give him in the circumstances

@Tristan Lane Nonsense. I mean, it's plot armour, and no worse than when McLane smashed through 4 stories of scaffolding in one of the lesser Die Hards,(as if that's an important bar to clear.) But Wick fell from a great height, only to be stopped short by a thin metal railing. That's a caved in chest. He made no effort to roll to save himself. Everyone can enjoy their own narrative, and if that does it for you, great. But the series is about just how over the top capable the man is. He survives a fatal fall by being lucky, now? I say, BOO.

The Man Above the Table had no idea how right he was when he told John that he'd "never seen a man fight so hard to end up back where he started". His timeline was wrong, though. John spent the first movie as The Hunter, and the second and third as The Hunted. And now, he returns to being The Hunter. His agency has been returned to him, and it was Winston and not The Elder who returned it.
@sinistertwister686
@sinistertwister686 3 жыл бұрын
I think The Elder was actually right, because he referred not to the events of the movies, or, at least, not only to them, but also to "the impossible last one job" John did to quit this life of crime. He fought so hard and got so far, but in the end if doesn't really matter: he is on a killing spree again.

I get the feeling that Winston saved John's life there at the end. He shot John in his chest, in his armored suit. You don't get to be where Winston is if you aren't a badass. If he REALLY wanted John dead, one shot through the head would have done it. The way he did it, shooting him where he knew it wouldn't kill him and then getting him out of that situation, tells me he is still on John's side. I only hope John realizes it before he kills Winston for his "Betrayal"

When I heard that John Wick 3 was in the works, I was convinced John would die. It seemed so logical to me, here we have an astounding trilogy of films where each installment has raised the stakes and increased the jeopardy higher than before, while simultaneously expounding upon the lore and mythos of the universe in which they're set. It's the Matrix, but, you know, better. I was so perplexed by John's decision to not kill Winston, to turn his back on the absolution he literally just chopped a finger off for, why? Out of loyalty to his father figure? Because he doesn't want to live as the Baba Yaga working for the High Table for the rest of his days? Watching this video made me realize no, the answer is so much more simple and so heartbreaking. This man, this engine of destruction, this walking apocalypse cannot stop. He wants to stop, he wants to have what was stolen from him, but you cant kill your way into paradise. The man, the myth, the legend. John Wick cannot escape himself, the person he was died when Helen died, and was killed again when Daisy died. Now there is only the Boogeyman, and the Boogeyman cant ride off into the sunset, it must run and kill and hunt and burn until it stumbles and dies in the dust. It isn't fair, it isn't right.

I was baffled by this turn as well. But it makes some sense. All John wants is peace. But there is no peace for him when he's excommunicado. So during the whole movie all he does is try to make amends so that he may return to the system. But Winston offers him a third choice: let's declare a war on the system. And it's Winston's betrayal, made in exchange for his return to the system (Cypher in Matrix anyone?) that makes John realize there is no peace nor for him nor for anyone, who dares to help him. Not until the system is torn down completely. Luckily there this Morphe...ehm...Bowery King guy, who's also had enough of bowing down to the system and he and his ragtag group of underground dwellers want to turn the fucker down as much as John does.

Great criticism can make you appreciate a film you like more, and this is definitely true here. I didn't entirely understand what John Wick: Part 3 - Parabellum was going for while watching it, but this pulls it all together! everyone faces dire consequences as a result of John Wick refusing to just die, and in Parabellum we see how his actions are destabilizing the entire foundations of the crime world. John Wick is not just an instrument of death - merely being associated with him, either as an ally, an enemy, or a boss, is a curse. he is Extremely Cursed, and he inflicts that curse on everyone around him.

John was doomed for this path from the beginning, the second he tried to retire this is the path he would take, the rules of this world wouldn't allow anything else. The only thing his wives death and the attack by Josef accomplish is to speed up the chain of events. The second he gave that marker the the Italian he was doomed. He was never going to let John be he had too many plans, the moment the marker was finished the Italian had no choice but to put a hit on John or else he'd look weak and complicit, meaning that John's own rules won't allow betrayal so John HAD to kill the Italian. Even if it wasn't in the Continental John still killed a member of the high-table so John still had to die. This entire system is based on rules and consequences and the moment a force goes against that it'll end in disaster. Rule #1 You are only truly out if you're dead, John tried to break that rule.
@MrJgreen12
@MrJgreen12 4 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent breakdown of the underlining thread of all three movies. You did a great job. Everything John did to "get out" predestined him for this path, once his marker was called in. Now after the events of the third film, the only way John can get out and find peace, is to burn the whole system to the ground until there is nothing left. The High Table just couldn't let him have his revenge and leave him be, so now they will feel the wrath of the force of nature that is John Wick. John will now teach them the lesson of why you should always "let sleeping dogs lie".

Something I absolutely adored about the film in a recent viewing was realizing it was not only a further expansion on the mythos that is the World of Wick™ but also how much of an absolute love letter it is to action cinema over the ages. The names in this film alone read like an Ensemble film for kick ass flicks. Couple that with the constant, sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant homages and references and it's almost like Chad and the gang just said "Screw it, we're doing this one *for us* " John beating up Italian crime dudes in a horse stable, talk about a nod to spaghetti westerns. Or the *countless* eastern and asian cinema references and nods. This is a series made by smart talented people who are also carrier stunt men and they so clearly made a film by themselves, for themselves. And it's awesome.

I feel like Winston knew John wouldn’t die when he shot him and that it was a choice to help the both of them.

I think Winston was playing a game where he can only win. John dies -> Winston is retuned to the status quo. John survived -> Winston acts like it was his plan all along -> has a chance to rise in the table after John takes it out.

I've been waiting for this! Thanks, Mikey! John Wick 3 was my least favorite of the 3, but still a top tier action movie... Did anyone else notice that some of the fight editing wasn't as crisp this time around? Some of the blocks and attacks were cut to just a second too early, and it looked a little scripted at times - especially in the antique shop fight. But I'm nitpicking, and the movie was still awesome.

I didn't notice the editing when I watched this either time I saw it, I'll watch it with friends this weekend if possible. I see this as the 'Empire' movie of the post-original-JW-movie trilogy. I look for a lot of story in the next movie, there are so many unresolved plot lines...

The question of why John wants to live seems simple to me. He doesn't. He /can't/ live, because he has nothing to live /for/, but at the same time, he can't let himself die. He's trapped between his loss and his sheer unbending will- an unliving husk that was once a man.

Words cannot describe how Mikeys videos make me feel. He sends me through such a variety of emotions usually all while talking about a film I already loved. What you're doing is important I saved this video to my watch later just so when I had the time I could sit down and give my full attention to what you had to say. Your content is important and gives an extremely unique perspective on a vast array of topics which has helped me learn to cope with certain things in my life too. Thank you Mikey.

These movies as just...great. You can tell how much fun everyone is having, and it's amazing seeing how they can keep raising the stakes. I saw 3 in the cinema with my best friend, both drunk (as was everyone else), and it was excellent. You know what? I might watch all 3 today.

first off, great video! secondly I was surprised there was no mention of the huge amount of time the film spent references westerns and in particular The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I loved seeing the horses used, the motorcycle scene felt like a love letter to horseback gunfights, the walk through the desert felt like an homage to westerns, and they directly reference the gun building scene from TGTBATU (which someone already mentioned in the comments) I am a big fan of westerns and enjoyed these great tributes but I am also not smart enough to figure out if the very use of them is somehow symbolic and wish desperately that I could hear a Mikey opinion on it as I have so often enjoyed Mikey opinions in the past.

I love the emphasis on Stahelski's and Leitch's last names, one small thing that scratched my brain in the first two John Wick videos was the mispronunciations of their names. Watching all three back-to-back-to-back made it like an unintended joke.

My son has dyslexia, which isnt anything of itself. BUT, what started out, and continues to be a massive trial through his young life has allowed me to see the world in an entirely new and enriched way; he percieves the world with different eyes that operate with a brain that works differently. He sees the world different then the majority... and that is refreshing and enlightening. Mikey, you discuss films i have an opinion on after watching them, and reveal a different thread of thought to follow. You are a gift, and i cant thank you enough. Glad to see you can do this forever! I wonder what bench you will be sitting on after "forever"?
