Even superheroes need a family, in Guardians of the Galaxy. Writer/director, James Gunn takes a lesser know franchise from the Marvel Universe and creates a film far greater than the sum of its parts.

I still cry when I watch the movies. The last ten minutes of the second movie are devastating. Having Mikey describe so poignantly why the characters are so endearing had me tearing up for most of the review. I love this movie so much, and Mikey's format for reviewing does it so much justice.

You making me watch 'GotG' for like the 4th time. Considering it in a way I hadn't even done yet. This is what I'm here for, this is why I love your content. In that light, bring on that Goblet of Fire. They had a dragon and it wasn't even all that relevant, that's cool shit, when you almost forget that for the rest of the film.

This family dynamic, which they expanded upon in Vol 2, is what appealed to me most about GotG (ok, and the catchy soundtrack^^) - it reminded me of the short-lived series Firefly and how the characters played off of each other there. :-)

I think there's something to be said about the fact that Groot is the only one among them that doesn't really, as far as we can see, make any real emotionally debilitating mistakes like the rest. He's only trying to protect Rocket, as far as we can see, and in the end he's the one that dies for the rest anyway, even though he owed them nearly nothing because he cared for all of them anyway.

I saw this movie in the theater and sitting like 4 rows away was a 5-7 year old kid. When Groot died he started bawling. The movie ended and his father was telling between sobs 'didn't you see the little tree at the end?' Trying to convince his son that it was okay because Groot "lived".

Don't worry he comes back, and he's more adorable than ever. As an aside, how the hell did they survive that ship crash? Groot sacrificed himself by surrounded them in twigs and leaves. Dude is walking, talking kindling. How does this end in any other way than trapping them in a giant fireball of death?
@amanibob1416
@amanibob1416 6 жыл бұрын
TheHorseFormerlyWithoutAName The first Groot, (old Groot), was the "Hulk cannot die" version of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but the script/plot killed him for twenty minutes or so, just for the climax to have some "feels" and tension. Like, litteraly, DEAD, to "save his friends" during Ronan's onslaught/ dreadnaught crash... The script/plot killed the, old Groot to "nerf/weaken" him. Adult Groot was the Guardians of the Galaxy equivalent of the "Dr. Banner/Hulk vs all the avengers", meaning that Groot was funny, but was waaay, waaay too strong. Groot was easy to slow down, but like Hulk, he won't quit and would spoil the climax,(Ronan vs Guardians final dance/battle), So basically, the script/plot killed a Hulk-like old Groot by making him "sacrifice himself". That sh** was a horrible, but clear example of a caracter reboot by way of "anti-plot armor". Groot was the only Guardians that could've tanked Ronan by himself,( in the comics), but he didn't. Groot was: "ze nice guy who died", but while his full-power and memories are gone, baby Groot is technically the same version, but weak/younger/toy. Ps: Old Groot was shown to have removed a single sapling seed from his head before the "save ze planet" fight, (we see old Groot do this during the prep/planning), yet he could've done so a hundred time BEFORE!!! Old Groot was killed-of by the script/plot, but "they" showed us the "Groot make a copy" only to explain why he died/didn't die... Old Groot didn't make another Groot, or a dozen, at ANY point because the truth is that old Groot was too strong, so "they" rebooted him. Now,"baby" Groot is NOT the same Groot, yet Groot lives on. Baby Groot is still "a Groot" and like a normal human vs Thor, who's an ashguardian, Groot ain't just a plant-based, talk funny humanoids. Groot are litteraly the marvel version of another type of god, (god of nature). Baby Groot don't know how to go all "Hulk smash" like his older counterpart and without the memories from his older self, he need to learn everything by himself, yet until he grow back into his adult form, he cannot do anything remotely as amazing as he could as an adult, like in the comics, (self-multiplying, or growing as tall as a skyscraper, or becoming impervious to FIRE, or even molding into a wood-based version of "hulkbuster").
@Kiterou
@Kiterou 6 жыл бұрын
Amani Bob You could have said that in a couple of sentences: They nerfed Groot by "killing" him, so that he won't kick every villains arse for the team, but they kept the character alive with the seedling Groot. There, done. Because with the way you have written your post, it is really, really hard to get your point, regardless how often you repeat yourself in the same post.

One of the things I love most about Marvel movies is that they are never just "another superhero flick." Guardians is a drama about family, Captain America is a spy thriller, Thor is a fish out of water about finding where you fit into the world, and they are all beautiful fantastical stories that just happen to wear the mask of superheroes. If they tried to follow the same "formula", every film would flop. They are all so different that I can't help but find it beautiful how all the pieces fit together. So much love went into each character and each film... it's awe-inspiring.

Oh please. Like all of the main characters who died in _that_ movie aren't going to be magically resurrected in the sequel. Do you really think Marvel would pass up on all of the money left to make from them?
@Tengila
@Tengila 6 жыл бұрын
FakeUserNameHere Oh, that's not even an obvious hypothetical. Sebastian Stan, for example - the actor playing Bucky - has a contract for _several_ more movies with Marvel Studios. If anything, it's Steve we should be worried for of the two, because Chris Evans is only contracted for one more. If anything speaks for the future of the MCU, it's the contracts.
@lo4tr
@lo4tr 6 жыл бұрын
@@FakeUserNameHere I would like to point out that whether or not the characters will remain dead, Marvel still killed them all. Even if, after the fact, you can rest easy knowing that things will most likely be alright come the end of the next Avengers, in the moment it was devastating for a LOT of people. So, yeah, not at all gun shy about killing them anymore.
@FakeUserNameHere
@FakeUserNameHere 5 жыл бұрын
@@lo4tr That's just semantics. Yes, they're _technically_ dead but what we're talking about here is the effect the death of a main character has on the audience. That effect is absent when everyone and their kid knows they're not going to stay dead.

Confession: I never really understood the appeal of Guardians of the Galaxy. I sought out several reviews in attempt to understand what people saw in it but was left just as confused as ever. They all praised it's quirkiness and gutsiness but I didn't really see what made it that much different than any other Marvel title. But after watching this video, I finally get it. You brought it all together for me. I might even watch Guardians again with this mindset and see if I develop a new appreciation for it. Thank you.

@GumpusRex
@GumpusRex 7 жыл бұрын
Its interesting because vol 2 essentially uses the majority of its run time, explaining exactly what this video did. It hinted at the pains in the characters in Vol 1, but had a larger issue to address. Vol 2 says, "we should explain to those that missed it 'why' these characters work so well." In Vol 1 they became a family, in spite of being so flawed, in vol 2 we see the impact that having those flaws has on their longer term relationships.

I love the setup for Peter's Star-Lord "outlaw name" and the true payoff not being when somebody finally gets his name right (Korath on the Dark Aster), but when we learn that it was actually his mother's apt knickname for him. What makes it even better is the letter revealing this was doubled with the unopened present which itself had a setup and payoff. The vulnerable expression on Peter's face with all the bravado washed away revealing that he never stopped being the young boy we met in scene 1. Pure genius.

I really appreciate Mikey's format since it focuses so much on the craft of movie making and what makes the movie enjoyable rather than tearing into it like a lot of reviewers. Looking at the comments on this page, I'm glad to see it's not just me.

I think what Mikey said near the end about 'pulling punches' is great. We keep pushing Hollywood to punch harder. More darker tones, more stakes, more loss, more weight behind the punches (that's how we get Infinity War on our hands btw). But it's time we realise that we pull punches for a reason. Because when you don't, someone gets hurt. When it's all said and done, and we're left with nothing but a beaten pulp left, we'd have wished more movies did like GoTG and gave us some soft punches. Although real punches are exciting in the moment, every punch is numbing and disorientating, until someone's in a coma or dead. So let's keep the punches light, let's allow for some happy endings. Yes, I know the metaphorical nature of this comment made it kind of really convoluted, but I think it works and most see through the metaphor and know exactly what I'm trying to say.

Fuck dude i never thought a video essay could make me cry. Lots of people say they cried but god damn i fucking lost it. That part about peter not taking his moms hand when she died and that mistake impacting him for the rest of his life hit way too damn close to home.

That opening... Someone appreciated Paul Leonard-Morgan's Soundtrack to Dredd as much as I did :D

She is most definitely a pass. I'm hoping he'll do something utterly inappropriate like Dredd. Also holding out for something from the Time Bandits/Brazil/Munchausen trilogy.

Have a like. While well deserved for *gestures to everything*, I would give it purely for the Lee Pace love.

This one gave me chills! Sooo good! I hope when it comes out on DVD you'll do GotG 2, as I feel it worked just about as good as any sequel can. Everything that happened in the first makes us accept so fully what happens in the second and raises the stakes w/o feeling bloated or cheap. I vote for HURT LOCKER :)

Welp, so much for Disney taking that risk by bringing James Gunn on board. They knew what they were getting, and are suddenly shocked by his tweets from 7-10 years ago.
