Parkinson tends to bring out the best in his interviewees and even in 1974 was a big hitter. Sellers knew this and produced a perfectly engineered and timeless performance that Sellers recognised would help cement his reputation forever . This wasn't just an interview, but a self-epitaph . Demonstrated by the fact that Sellers continues to mystify and confound people to this day. And this performance is blowing minds nearly fifty years later.
@stephaniecarrow48982 жыл бұрын
@@fergusdonaghy3124 Mind-blowing, yes! But was it really engineered? The quality of his impersonations reveals the depth and capacity for observation he possessed! I suspect he would have been an excellent scientific researcher. Also, despite suddenly being asked to instantly switch from actively entertaining the audience to discussing difficult personal introspection regarding his failed marriages Peter transitions gracefully revealing the integrity of a self actualized man; as he states the truth regarding how difficult he is to live with, even taking responsibility for his infidelity. That is not the behavior of a man lost in his characters, as he is often represented as being, there.

This is one of the very few videos I go back to year after year after year. While the genius and the depth of his talent is for all to see, I always come away feeling so sad for Peter. Although his recalling of stories of his father and grandfather are humorous, his eyes tell a different story. I can’t help but think he could never please some people whose approval he craved. When the talk turned personal, again his eyes show hurt and disappointment in himself, but the words that come out of his mouth are always intended to elicit laughter. It’s spellbinding and heartbreaking all wrapped up in an amazing showcase of pure talent. I put him at the absolute top of comedic actors, along with Jerry Lewis and Jim Carey. Their abilities to seamlessly transform from one character to the next is unmatched. Lewis and Carey also appear so lonely and almost tortured souls. How is it that the funniest of people often never seem to find what they are really looking for??
@shootstraight29 Жыл бұрын
@@TD75 Hi What is your definition of “ completely screwed up ?” I saw Jim Carey at Yuk Yuks in Toronto when he was 18. He was just an incredible diamond in the rough. Since then he went on to become the highest paid actor in THE WORLD. I loved Peter Sellers, but he was never close to the popularity of Jim Carey and believe me he had issues. This was pre social media so there is some apples to apples to that. Post social media, Jim Carey has gone to even higher highs but also some lows as well. Do you for one second think you have the remotest idea of waking up every day to negative stories written by people you have never met saying you were an asshole at a place you have never been to ? No you don’t, and neither does almost everyone else on the planet earth. So with tremendous fame and fortune comes all of this noise that is non stop. Answering the same dumb questions over and over and over while trying to be courteous. There is a reason they say be careful about what you wish for. I’m sure he wanted to put his amazing talents on display, and he has. Think of how many people, young and old, that he has made laugh hysterically. I have never seen him be rude or full of himself in any of the interviews he’s done or shows he has been on. I have never met him so that is all I can go on. I live in Burlington Ontario, where Jim and his family lived for a while, and am aware of the storey of his Dad Percy being laid off and the economic and emotional struggles the family had after that. So my question is who are you and what good have you done to question someone that I’m sure you have never met. I look forward to that lame response.

Robin Williams is another clear example of this, actually i see many similarities between the two actors! A sense of feeling the need to constantly please and gain some form of acceptance.

ALAN BOOSH Yeah i see that now. Pity both of them led such troubled, sad lives.

Difference, a big one, is that Williams almost never acts. Sellers, contrariwise, is no improviser.
@fergusdonaghy31242 жыл бұрын
@@garymorgan3314 I disagree. Sellers was renowned for being able to improvise on set. He was alleged to even be able to conjure new characters at the drop of a hat

@@fergusdonaghy3124 That's interesting Fergus. I wonfer if he "had these ready" or whether, like Cook, he flew. My favourite of his is 'Being There' where he reissuing the self-indulgence. Ta for food for thought!

The greatest performance that never was: Peter Sellers as John Lennon. Likely Lennon was copping Sellers in some of this celebrated moments, but the likeness at times is uncanny.

Possibly there have been others as good at performing different accents as Sellers, but it's the apparent ease that he slips in and out of them all that is unique and very very funny.

Who on earth makes a copyright claim on a 5 second clip within an old interview of someone that has already passed away. Greedy and ridiculous.
@NickJay9 жыл бұрын
+easybullet3 I totally and utterly agree. Was going to say the same thing. They must have authorised it for this 'show' (episode) - might even have made them some sales from people interested in buying it but there's no logic at all to these copyright claims on KZbin, many of which are seemingly automated and illogical but yes, greedy and ridiculous also spring to my mind too.
@easybullet38 жыл бұрын
Harry Hui strange comment. he died BEFORE youtube and internet existed !!! try using your logic. this is nothing to do with him. Lol this is whoever owns the rights to the MOVIE that was shown.

Harry Hui ok harry. I appologize. I thought you were saying that he was a greedy jew and wanted royalties. so i pointed out that he was dead way before youtube. so I was wrong about my assumptions. but really,, no need to swear and stuff at a random stranger.. Lol it would have seemed obvious to you that I was mistaken. imagine if school teachers cussed at students. anyway.. i was wrong. and yes.. "mr happy bollox" was being unecessarily racist.
@yakacm8 жыл бұрын
+easybullet3 I don't think it was originally that short, they obviously cut it short and left the sound out so they didn't get in trouble with copyright, as you can use a very short exert without getting in trouble.

Sad to say I remember this when it was shown live on the BBC. It was the last program of a Saturday night.Parky realised that Peter Sellers was in 'great form'. The program carried on for about half a hour past the supposed finish time. Great Show, Great Guest, and Great Interviewer. Sadly it could not happen today with adverts, etc,
