Also remember that Duncan Jones the director of Moon and Source Code is making a film of another classic 2000AD strip "Rogue Trooper" which I truly hope will be awesome.

@@jrny20 In regards to the film: The studio did not (at the time of the release of this film) want to make a new one sens it did not make that much money. They (at that time 2012 ) did not ruled out a second Dredd film in the future. Thier where talks about a series Judge dredd where Carl Urban would play Dredd. The premes was; we follow some judges in Mega City one and Dredd would not be the main focus. Sens He (Carl Urban) is a fulltime actor, he would act in some episodes and be absent in others due to his busy film schedule. Sorry for my less then stellar English. Disclamer: I have not heard any news about this series in a while so I dont know if they are filming it, it is delayed or they cand it.

What's funny and kind of sad is that Sly's portrayal of John Spartan in "Demolition Man" was a better and more valid interpretation of Dredd than his actual turn as Dredd. All Demolition Man did was flip the nature of the dystopia from a grungy East Coast authoritarian setting to a West Coast New Age authoritarian one. And make all restaurants Taco Bell, because sponsorship and product placement.

@@grishnakh4509 Possibly. But Stallone was pretty egotistical back then, and I definitely read a lot of articles about him being the big star and wanting his face shown. Fortunately Karl Urban is a bit more humble. The Stallone version has its good points. We see the ABC robots and the Angel gang. But his sidekick(the actors name escapes me,) made Jar Jar Binks seem like Marlon Brando.

@@scottneil1187 And then we got a shit Dredd film not to long after that. Where he doesn't keep the helmet on and everything is just way to over the top. Like comparing the "I am the Law" phrase from both films shows the flaws of the one film while showing how good this one is. Like in the first film that line has become a Meme and just classic example of over acting. Where in this film it's used perfectly and gives you chills and shows just how badass Dredd is.

Things I love about this film: Easily one of the best action movie adaptations of the last 20 years. Dredd is characterized almost entirely through his actions (stunning the kids instead of killing them). The power that Karl Urban commands from behind a mask the entire runtime of the movie. @Owen Thomas Rejoice though, because there are people working on a Judge Dredd tv series, called "Mega-City One". And, if possible, and if things work out the right way, Karl Urban could potentially be back in the role for that tv-series! :D In reality there has been work done on the tv-series for many years now... but there where some complications though I think, and eventually the movie and tv-rights for things like Judge Dredd came back to the company that makes the comic, which is Rebellion Developments... yes... the video game company that make the Sniper Elite games. XD They have owned the whole "2000 AD" franchise since 2000 when they bought it. They bought it because Jason Kingsley (a guy who legit sometimes dress as a knight, in full plate armor, riding horses and totally jousts with lances and everything as well at times, he also has a youtube channel called "Modern History TV" for medieval stuff), one of the two who founded Rebellion, wanted to save the whole 2000 AD franchise due to it having slowly gone down the drain during the 90's. Anyway... the last I heard (this summer) about the Judge Dredd tv-series is that the entire thing is essentially fully written and ready to go... but due to the whole, you know, pandemic situation, it has all been put on hold. Of course, they would also need to sell the show to some network or streaming service or something, but Jason Kingsley have said that they have been talking to people and come pretty far in that process. Also... on top of all that... I heard that back in late 2018 Rebellion Developments actually bought a 220000 square-foot huge place in Oxford that they intend to use as a film studio to use to support their film and tv production company "Rebellion Productions" (the ones making Mega-City One). So they have essentially all the pieces they need on the table to get going, except for having sold it to some network... and, of course, the pandemic stuff. So right now it just seems to be a matter of time befor things get going... hopefully at least. Sorry for the long post, I have a hard time being short when it comes to things that I like and am interested in. XD

@@Calistarius79 I have heard Urban in interviews say that he doesn't think he will be apart of it. That he's kind of busy with the series The Boys and that even if they want him to be in the series he might not have time for it. But hopes the series is great regardless if he's apart of it or not.

In lots of other posts I have made on this video I have said that both the developers, and Karl Urban him self, would like for Urban to play the role again... but that things has to align in the right way for that to happen. So it is a small chance, but a chance I am still hoping for. Since Mega-City One is not quite there yet, they might be able to work round Urbans schedule... maybe if things get going quickly for Mega-City One they can slot them selves in after Urban is finished recording season 3 of The Boys. Who knows, I will be "holding my thumbs" as we Swedes say (it is essentially the Swedish version of crossing your fingers).

Really hope one day we get a sequel to this. Also one of the few 3D films that actually enhanced the viewing experience.

This probably said elsewhere in the comments: Judge Dredd is a seminal british comic book character. Dredd represents a totalitarian regime and is often mistaken for the hero. Dredd himself is a vector for stories. Anderson in the comic books is the biggest humanising influence on him. This film was released after but filmed before the Raid

@@sparda9060 Until the Cycle Brakes or is Broken, the World of Dredd is after the cycle and system was broken by Nuclear Fire, the new world with it's system and cycle tells folks they don't have to take responsibility for them selves, they are provided for by the system (the Meg-1 Wealthfair State) that barley provides the minimum necessities when it works (the civil administration is always on the verge of failure), Poverty and a lack of personal responsibility has people resort to Crime, Crime eventually attracts the Judges, by the time you meet a Judge you are up for some serious Cube time, few Criminals are willing to except this and unconsciously choose "Suicide by Judge".

What Dredd does is create a situation, a post apocalyptic city, an environment where a totalitarian regime is the only form of government that can work. It’s not exactly fascist, and the judges are scrupulously fair.

Great adaptation of 2000 A.D.'s 'Judge Dredd', so glad he never takes of the helmet, like Stallone insisted on in the crappy 90's version. Best thing about movie, when it ends, it just feels like a small part of their day of Judge's.

Supposedly Stallone also didn't want to take off the helmet but he was forced to due to contractual reasons (studio paying for Stallone wants to see Stallone, otherwise it could be anyone under the helmet).

I have read some interview with Karl Urban where he at one point said that he would have never been part of this movie if Judge Dredd had taken off his helmet at any point in the movie. He was asked if he was interested in the project to which he had said "Hell yeah!" to, and was relived reading the script when he discovered that Dredd did in fact never remove his helmet. :)

Two things about the intro: First, the minivan isn’t “outrunning” Dredd’s bike. There are just complications about what he can do next while avoiding putting innocents at greater risk. Second, take note of the fact that they keep talking about “recyc”(as in “recycle”) when they see dead ppl, and also take note that you don’t see any farms anywhere, or ranches and animals we normally eat. 🤨🤢

It was only after the idiots in the van, who were probably just going to get time in an isocube, took out a pedestrian that Dredd escalated to lethal response.

Because this movie was doing new things with 3D and had some technical issues, it had a very long production schedule. The script got leaked, then months before release _"The Raid"_ came out. Coincidence? I think not!

It was a coincidence born of necessity (and I think the comparison at the time was unfair as both are excellent and very different films), as The Raid: Redemption wasn't the film they planned to make. The intention was to make Berendal (which after the success of the Raid, was itself repurposed as a direct sequel), but one of the financiers pulled out just before the shoot, so they repurposed much of the fight choreography they'd been working on and re-wrote it as a streamlined, single-location action flick.

@Bobo Boy No need to come across like such an ass about it. It wasn't speculation, it was based on an interview with Gareth Evans in which the similarities between the two were brought up. "Q. Do you know that the new Judge Dredd film has essentially the same plot as The Raid? Gareth Evans: Yes, while we were in post-production on The Raid I was telling a friend of mine that we’d just finished shooting and told him what the story was about and how this unit of cops had to fight their way out of a building after their raid comes down on them, he replied: “That’s like the new Judge Dredd movie.” I said: “What?” So, he sent me this thing where I could read the synopsis for it and I thought: “Oh God, we’ve got to get released very, very soon!” [Laughs]"

They didn't really, this movie only has about 10% of the satire while the Stallone movie has maybe 30% and that movie kept to lore (clones of Judge Fargo, Rico, the Angel Gang, block wars, robots, flying vehicles etc.).

Oh man, already stoked to go on this ride with you and I'm just a few minutes in. This is one of the few movies I've seen where 3D was AMAZING. They didn't overdo it, it felt realistic in those dark grungy hallways, and you felt like you were IN those slo-mo scenes. I half expected it to be a 4D experience at times, to feel water droplets on my arms during that slo-mo bath scene near the beginning.

When it came to Judge Dredd, the first time I saw him was in the campy Sylvester Stallone version in 1995. You would suspect that he would be a Robocop with that prolific chin but Dredd is a human but dry-no-nonsense guy who happens to be the number one law enforcement officer in his universe but to go more in-depth on his backstory, you have to read the British Comicbooks for that. On that note, this movie was a faithful adaptation to its comic-book counterpart but ended up as a sleeper cult hit due to its bad timing being released in the year of, The Raid. Its story being a tad bit similar as well as coincidental has nothing to do with it but is a shame because I would've liked a sequel to this movie.

so good... the Stallone version killed the chances of this movie having success. Dredd is such a great comic book character and Karl Urban nailed it (i believe he was a fan growing up). The word was that this film had a lot of delays during its development, and because of them happening before shooting ever began the script leaked. That then led to producers from another company quickly getting The Raid filmed based on the Dredd script (hence why they're so similar). Then, for some reason, the producers of the Dredd film decided that it should only be released in theaters in 3d (the original title of this movie was 'Dredd 3D'), and it technically "bombed" at the box office because it had little to no advertising, was in very select theaters that had 3D screens, was a higher ticket price than normal because it was a 3D movie, AND it was released at a time when 3D movies were kinda dying out in theaters. But at least Karl Urban (Dredd) has been pushing hard to get a sequel made for this movie, even to this day, and last we all heard was that a tv show might be in the works which might cast him back in the titular role. So here's hoping =)

The point of Dredd himself is that he is larger than life, he is the embodiment of the law, and as so he needs to be terrifying. One of the reasons he worked so well in this movie vs the one with Stallone is that he never is humanized by taking off the helmet. It keeps him mysterious and it works well in opposite to Hershey who is never seen with the helmet on and is shown to have a lot of humanity. Mama is another great character if you look into her, she was abused and turned to drugs to help dull the senses, eventually turning to slow-mo to take the edge off, building an empire in that compound, she is the embodiment of humanity gone wrong, so we have The law, Humanity, and humanity gone wrong all working in tandem with each other and it creates a great story. Throw in some corrupt judges and we have subtle character development as Dredd realizes that the law isn't black and white, making him give Hershey a passing grade.

I love this movie so much, I think it's literally one of my all time favorites. Definitely favorite comicbook movie. Although it always sorta bothered me how, despite having such incredibly pretty cgi gore during the slowmo scenes, the regular speed gunfights have kinda bad digital blood splatter. It's not a big deal at all, but it really sticks out to me when I rewatch.

@@JamesVSCinema It's sort of an interesting case, cause the world and the tech in this movie is a lot more "down-key" compared to the comics, where the vision of the future is mostly just over the top satire, even when the story itself is taken seriously. In that sense, the 90's Stallone movie is actually a bit more "accurate". This movie is thankfully more accurate in how it treats the subject of the pretty fucking facist judge system and the world that would give rise to them, which is to say, critically.

I've loved Dredd since my early adulthood, I own most of the comics. This version nailed it, Karl Urban is one of my favorite actors ever. Bones, Dredd AND Billy Butcher, c'mon. If you do like Dredd and the world, explore the comics and maybe the warhammer 40k universe, which is adjacent. All of this comes from a British comic anthology, 2000 AD. Just avoid the Stallone version, first movie I ever felt like walking out of.

I love everything about this movie, Urban is amazing, he is dredd as much as RDJ is Tony Stark. The effects, the cinematography, the sound, the simple yet effective plot, the way it treats its audience with respect, it explains nothing, its shows you the story and expects you to keep up. It compromises nothing to give you exposition, it just drags you into its world and keeps you there, so when the block opens and the sun shines down, you actually feel it emotionally. I love it does not try to tell a massive apocalyptic story, its one incident, in one block, among thousands of identical blocks. its just one day in megacity one. The way it makes zero attempt to hype up the stakes, yet it feels really personal because of it. And Urban absolutely kills this role. Its really sad that this movie never got a sequel, but then its always hard to live up to something like this. This movie is great.

One huge thing people miss out on watching this movie these days is it was filmed in and made for 3D, and holy hell does the 3D add to it unlike any other 3D movie Ive ever seen. The slow-mo scenes, the long falls, the gatling gun bullets flying through the walls, speeding through traffic, it was amazing in theater. If you ever get the chance to watch this on a big 3D tv or projector, do it.

Also as far as the social commentary of dystopian sci-fi like this, it isnt actually based on our future, but something that actually happened. Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong was this exact sci-fi dystopian world for 45 years. After world war 2, the communists took over China, but the British still owned Hong Kong. Except for one little spot about the size of a city block that was technically a Chinese military fort that for political reasons the Chinese ignored owning. Thousands of refugees fled from China to Hong Kong, where they found prices too high to live, their job skills and certifications not recognized by the British government, and no way to get by. So they started squatting in shanties on the unoccupied fort. And then more people came, and more, and more. Shanties got built on top of shanties, and eventually the city block sized area morphed into the most densely populated place on earth, with tens of thousands of people living in roughshod apartments built on top of each other in one city block. There were no laws because the British didnt own it and China wouldnt claim it, and it just turned into its own self contained city. I'm a bit older (45 at the time of this writing) and I grew up reading Judge Dredd as a kid (thanks to my big brother who had great taste in comics). Later in life, I remember being so bummed out at the first Judge Dredd movie with Stallone... just terribly sad. Fast forward to this movie, and they nailed it. Unfortunately that same big brother I mentioned earlier had passed away... this movie is one HUGE thing I wish he could have experienced.
