What really kills me about Chuck this episode is when he accuses Jimmy of taking shortcuts for his law degree. Like it's another con job the same as everything else. As lots of people have said, no matter what college you go to, the Bar is the Bar. Jimmy taking night school and online classes, while working a full job, that's not taking the easy way out it's working even harder than anyone who get full rides to Harvard or Yale on their parents' money. But Chuck can't see it!

It seems like the creators going back to the deadly sin of Pride and the damage it brings, not just to you, but to everyone. Chuck, while he may be pretending this is all about Jimmy not being good enough, it seems like his pride is personally injured by Jimmy being a lawyer.

@@JamesVSCinema Sometimes it be your family. My brother had notoriously refused to do the dishes, to the point where it piled up on the counters and grew flies, and there was nothing anybody could do to make him do dishes. This somewhat petty thing has created in me a deeply negative view of my brother, that he’s self-absorbed, lazy, and constantly trying to find a way out of work. So it somewhat shocks me how easy it is to understand Chuck.

The acting is unfairly good for this point in the show. Like, the McGill boys portray every nuance of a deeply complex fraternal relationship like they've genuinely known each other for years. Kim tells so much with her facial expressions alone. And Patrick Fabian manages to create a Howard that's easy to hate but still leaves you wanting to know what exactly his motivations are. Also it was hard not to mention Steven Ogg's appearance when you were talking about BB characters being like GTAV characters lol.

Honestly, it's interesting that we hate Chuck so much, but his flashback in the finale was more interesting than Walt being back lmao. I think a lot of people cheered for his flashback more than Walt's. I guess after all the things Jimmy eventually does, you kinda get this warm feeling seeing him back again saying "damn Chuck you were right all along" and you cheer more for him than Walt's reddit moment scene, even though I hated him throughout the whole show.

This episode is excellent, and it does paint a different picture of the kind of person Jimmy is. You could see how he was finally feeling comfortable going about things the right way and actually doing good progress, only to be struck down and told he'll never change by the person he most looked up to. Ultimately, it is his decisions that lead to his downfall, but Chuck definitely played a massive role in that downfall. I do think that had Chuck acted differently, Jimmy probably wouldn't have fallen as far as he did, which is not to exonerate his own wrong-doings, but I do feel like Chuck was the support that kept him from completely falling in. Had that support been better, he probably wouldn't have slipped as frequently as he did. I see Jimmy as being a bit like an addict. Still, the relationship between Jimmy and Chuck is at the core of the show's engine and the character's heart to me.

You can tell "people don't change" really hurt Jimmy, especially after he's just witnessed Chuck make huge strides in his own illness to electromagnetic waves. Sure he's still tiptoeing around phones and whatnot, but he use to not be able to even step outside. Jimmy knew Chuck could change, and it broke his heart to know his own brother didn’t feel the same about him.

That last scene with Chuck is heartbreaking. No matter what you can say about Jimmy at this point, he truly passed the bar the right way. It took him three tries before he passed it and he did so by going to night school through online classes. In Chuck’s world, anything short of an Ivy League college is taking a short cut to getting a degree. Jimmy was truly doing his best to turn his life around, but as soon as he passed the Bar, Chuck couldn’t allow his brother to be a Lawyer at his firm, so he got Howard to be the bad guy for him. Great reaction James, have a great day. Take care!

Your reaction to that scene at HHM is a great illustration of how good the storytelling is in this show. We know Jimmy's past as a con artist, we know his future as a giant sleazeball, but in that moment he's our protagonist and he's being wronged. We're experiencing a fragment of his life where he's being ACTUALLY UNFAIRLY mistrusted and it's like the past and future have melted away and the audience desperately wants him to earn everybody's respect, and to hell with how he may weaponize that respect if he gets it.

What I always found interesting is that Chuck was still at work before Jimmy became a lawyer and he took his age-long sabbatical shortly afterwards. Some people think the fear of Jimmy becoming a lawyer (the chimp with a machine gun) is what made his anxiety start. But personally, I think it’s the guilt and tumult of two-faced dealings with Jimmy that created it. The fact that he led with his resentment and not with his love and the repressed love for his brother is what is making Chuck punish himself with his condition. Part of the fear is of being in the light. Because in the light the truth is laid bare.

No spoilers, but there's a scene in S02E09 where three characters have an intense confrontation, and it's all monologuing. And in interviews, one actor said the actor who'd been working the longest had told her once, "When you're in a scene when someone's talking to you, you're never not speaking You're deciding not to speak." You'll absolutely know the scene when you see it. When that episode comes up (or if anyone wants an excuse to rewatch it now), watch the episode through, but go back and watch that scene another three times. Each time, only look at one actor. Every single one is 100% in character the entire time and it's fascinating. And this show just has that level of quality (that James is appreciating constantly) the entire run through. It's remarkable.

Jimmy has a totally legitimate law degree and passed the bar (same as Chuck), just not from a very prestigious school, he didn't cut any corner or cheated (unless you consider attending a less renownd law school as "cheating" or "cutting corners"). Chuck is simply jelous of him, literally. Jimmy is not only a sociable and likeble person (unlike him), but now he has also a law degree, theoretically putting him on the same level as Chuck. Also, he thinks Jimmy doesn't deserve a degree because of his past, and as Chuck said "people don't change", according to him. He can't stand that his good for nothing brother, "Slipping Jimmy", is now his peer, a lawyer. Instead of being proud of his own brother and all the effort Jimmy put into "changing" and doing something as amazing as taking a law degree and passing the bar LEGITIMATELY, he's just jelous and wants to keep him down. Chuck has very, VERY few redeemable or likable qualities as a person after this episode in my eyes.

This is the point where re-thinking what you believe about Howard becomes important. Chuck was the one who didn't want Jimmy at HHM, but it would break Jimmy's heart if Chuck was the one to tell him that, so Howard (being Chuck's good and loyal friend) was willing to play the villain in this. When you view why he was "keeping Jimmy down," Howard's actually not a bad guy at all. That "rich white guy stereotype" thing of his is exactly what you want when meeting new clients. They're the perfect two-man partnership; between him on image and Chuck on legal strategies, it's no wonder that HHM became as big as it did.

I think at the end of this episode it’s clear that Chuck has been Jimmy’s nemesis all along, not Howard. Chuck has an enormous influence on the firm, and he and Howard have a longtime friendship and Chuck was his mentor. It sucks that Howard was essentially Chuck’s puppet when it came to decisions about Jimmy. But Howard didn’t have to - and probably shouldn’t have - told Kim. I’m glad he did, though.

Something that's fun to do going forward is to watch Howard's micro expressions, especially when Chuck and Jimmy are in the same room. You probably already caught them when editing this episode, but they tell their own fantastic story that's easy to miss if you're focusing too much on the other players in the room. You're probably going to hear the argument that Chuck's stance is proven by how Jimmy turns out in Breaking Bad. I think that's too reductive and doesn't allow room for how a person's experiences, including Chuck's own opinions and behavior, influence and shape a person into who they become. That's nearly the entire point of this show. Thanks for the reaction!

What is brilliant about this it's the fact that it makes sense! Try see this through Chuck's perspective. He grew up seeing his brother scamming people after easy money. He must have hated this so much that he developed this exagerated sense of justice, maybe he expected to compensate his brother's flaws with his virtue. And after all that he sees his brother becoming a lawyer and that suddenly is a much bigger threat. He still loves his brother and that's why he tries to "protect society" behind his back. Such a great dynamic between those two!

Not that he cheated or anything, but Chuck is mad that Jimmy was able to pass the bar by studying for a degree with an online course from the University of American Samoa, which in 2008 isn’t as widely regarded as it is today with all the available online courses and boot camps. Because of the manner in which he studied compared to his own education, he doesn’t see Jimmy as a “real” lawyer. He did tell Chuck in the flashback that he took an online course because it’s the only place that would accept someone like him.

It wasn’t that Jimmy put in less effort, if anything he put more in as he was funding the degree and working a full time job alongside it, whereas Chuck likely got help with funding and was able to focus more attention on it. What Chuck hated was that Jimmy’s law degree was from an online course, whereas Chuck likely graduated from a prestigious law institute. Chuck is such a colossal, monumental piece of shit for this whole situation. The irony of a lawyer being so convinced that nobody can change or reform is wild. Rehabilitation and reform are supposed to be cornerstones of the judicial system, even though we all know those are nowhere near where they should be. The best way to help someone change is to give them a hand. Jimmy worked so hard to get here, and he didn't cheat, but instead of nurturing his brother into being a better position he kicked him down instead. All while being completely and utterly dependent on Jimmy's good will for his insane condition. It's a great episode, and goddamn does it make me hate Chuck.

In hindsight it's surprising how much of the stuff Chuck said was actually true, but then again his relationship was the cause for alot of the decisions Jimmy made.

The 'Mike takes the gun' scene is the only scene I've seen from BCS and I am so sad that I have not watched the series yet and that I can't watch this along with you. I'll probably have a surgery or something in the next year or two and have time to binge it at some point lol.

I've read somewhere that the reason better saul is arguably better storytelling is because the end was written, it is the breaking bad part. Not having to have to worry about the epic finale allowed the writers to flesh out each character deeply. Thus making this a bit slow burning at times, less action(y) but way better writing IMO. To me BCS is definitely way better of a show but it wouldn't be if we didnt have such strong action packed intro to this universe.

Jimmy's law degree is legit. Chuck just doesn't want his brother to be a lawyer because he sees Jimmy as a crook incapable of change.

This was sucha a good episode. First of all, notice how the show keeps introducing dumb/innocent criminals. First the kettleman family, now this nerd. Breaking Bad was all about the best of the best criminals in their own fields. BCS deals with lawyers, and they deal with all kinds, the pros and the newbies. Makes the criminal world more diverse. But also, MIke's speech here about Criminal vs Bad guy, is one of the best speeches. That's something he should have told Walt honestly, because Walt broke the law, and instantly embraced being the cool bad guy. Jesse had a lot of guilt to him, so he called himself the bad guy, but in the end, we saw that he was a good guy, on the wrong side of the law, not a bad guy. And now for the real meat and potatoes of this episode. The scene that changes everything. Chuck and Jimmy. Man this episode made me realize that we are dealing with such a complex relationship here. It's not that Jimmy faked his law degree, it's that (in Chuck's eyes) a charlatan and a con-man, took a shortcut and dared to become his peer. As he said, the law is sacred. He sees Jimmy as a monster, but he does not realize that he is the one creating that monster. It's such a complex relationship, and they keep adding layers (I wrote lawyers by accident lol) to it. One of the most complex dynamic ever put to tv. And also, it's just my theory, but I do think Chuck's mental illness is basically anxiety caused by Jimmy, and he just thinks that electricity is what causes it. I say this because when Jimmy became a lawyer, Chuck got ill, and when Jimmy pulled that billboard stunt, Chuck got worse.

The sad thing is Chuck's not wrong. Jimmy falls well below the ethical standards expected of a lawyer/ While a lot of people argue that Chuck causes Jimmy to fall off the wagon, we've already seen him acting unethically while practicing the law. His work with the Kettlemans (bribery), his encounter with the skaters (fraud), plus viewers already know where he ends up. Chuck's "monkey with a machinegun" is brutal but also accurate. Nobody can hurt you like family. And yeah, just because Chuck is right doesn't mean Chuck's not being a jerk.

Yea, all the people I see defending Jimmy never mention the fact that he was always skirting the line between legal and illegal/moral/immoral actions. All of these are what makes him such a great character since you can't simply pinpoint one exact thing that pushed him into becoming Saul.

@@SolidSnake240 Another reviewer mentioned that that's the tragedy (in the Greek sense) of Better Call Saul. It's his base nature. As you'll see over the series, Jimmy could be almost anything and have been successful (man would be a hell of a politician) but not something with as strict a moral requirement as being a lawyer.

Unfortunately, I relate to Jimmy. Working hard to prove your loved ones you are worthy and can be really good at something, but they dismiss you and put you down because of whatever you did in the past, not being able to let go and still seeing you as that person. Being made to feel inferior all your life is horrible and makes you a very bitter person in the end. At some point you have to drop whatever ppl treat you this way. Even if it's your relatives. Or else you'll spend your life constantly trying to prove yourself to them instead of actually living for yourself. And also these ppl will just continue amplifying whatever issues they already caused you. And my relatives wonder why I almost never see them.
