Any scene with the Irishman… Chris Pine stars as Robert the Bruce in a movie that is more historically accurate called Outlaw King. It’s a slower paced movie but good. Another good period piece is Timothee Chalamet in a Henry V movie called The King.

While hollywood is never historically accurate, great movies like Braveheart inspire me to look up and read about the history I know was left out. I looked up William Wallace after watching this movie and ended up reading about the Romans and the Saxons and the Vikings and the Normans. It just keeps going.

I am very forgiving to movies which are ahistorical for that reason. The movie has to be entertaining first and foremost. If, and once, I am entertained I will then be motivated to seek out the original, or historically correct story. There should be, and are, limits to "artistic license" but we have to realize there are documentaries and then there are entertainment films.

The big battle scenes were actually filmed in Ireland, partly because it was easier to find wide open, flat plains to set up large battles and partly because the Irish government offered generous subsidies to filmmakers that filmed in Ireland. The extras in the battle scenes were divided between full-time Irish soldiers on one side, and part-time army reservists on the other side, so the real-life rivalry between them resulted in some genuine aggression and even some real injuries on set.

Very likely; the biggest Braveheart battle scenes were filmed around a flat area in county Kildare known as the Curragh, which is where the Irish army headquarters are located. The insane opening scenes of D-day in 'Saving Private Ryan' were filmed on a beach in county Wexford, also on the eastern side of Ireland.

@Francisco Di Cecco Hi Francisco, I'm Scottish & this is one of my favourite movies. It's based on a 19th century account of Wallace's life by the Scottish novelist, Sir Walter Scott which was itself loosely based on a 15th century epic poem by another Scot, Blind Harry. Maybe this is just my prejudice, but it often seems to me that there is a widespread attitude in the United States that it's OK to rewrite history from what it was into what makes the most pleasing mythology. I’m Scottish and I can confirm that this movie is close to our hearts. Even though it’s only based on history but not acccurate retelling of history it still stirred a great amount of pride in our people again as even to this day we still live under the iron grip of the English throne. Although now they don’t rape our wives on our wedding day instead they rape our pockets on payday to fund the dirty corruption in London. This will always be one of my favourite films. Btw you should give this period a google. Also you could argue that the outlaw king on Netflix is an unofficial sequel to this movie. A good film worth a watch that followed this one but was sadly overshadowed by it was rob roy with Liam neeson. It’s also somewhat of a sequel in that it tells the story of the end period of the Scottish wars of independence whereas braveheart is set at the beginning.

Anyway, we put in the first tape and the movie immediately starts with the scene where he's dreaming of his murdered girl. We all thought that was an odd place to start the story, but no matter, it just "get's right into it, okay!" Then he gets captured and we're all thinking "surely, he's gonna get out of this, we still have another tape to go." Then they behead him and the credits roll, and we eventually figure out that the person who rented it last put the cassette tapes in the wrong cases. We watched the movie kinda backwards! XD

The Battle of Stirling was actually the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Instead of using long spears to stop the Calvary charge on open ground. Wallace and his men waited for the English to cross a long narrow bridge over a river. When half the English, with the Commanders in the lead crossed, Wallace and his men attacked. The bridge was too narrow for the English to come over more than two horsemen side by side or three men on foot. In the chaos, the other half of the English forces were trapped on the bridge, while their Commanders and Calvary, were wiped out. English soldiers were not trained to think for themselves, only follow orders. So when their Commanders were all killed, they turned and fled back across the bridge, not knowing what else to do. The remainder of the English troops fled, with Wallace and his men in pursuit, killing some of them and attacking and seizing the English army's supply train, with all their food and other provisions. It was considered by many historians a brilliant tactical play by Wallace.

As an English person who grew up on the northern western border I suppose I should be routing for England in this. But I did my college years in Wales which Braveheart seems to sweep under the rug as an inconvenient truth in this film because the Welsh suffering under the Longshanks and the English in general makes his occupation of Scotland seem downright trivial by comparison. So I'd say I hate Longshanks too 🤣🤣🤣 - but that being said I hate Mel Gibson far more for completely ignoring the Welsh here, they had it so much worse and the film acts as if they (an entire nation in Britain) doesn't exist at all but for a random mention by Longshanks talking about gathering Welsh conscripts for his army. I can only guess because there isn't a particularly sizable Welsh population in the US compared to the huge Irish one which prompted the Irish character Stephen to join William Wallace.

It’s even explained away by the movie with Robert the Bruce saying at the very beginning that the historians of England will call him a liar, and future generations will only remember the account that was recorded by them. It might not be accurate, but it’s meant to depict a supposed alternative version of the events. While some elements of the movie is inaccurate, there are also other elements that are true. For example William Wallace was quartered and beheaded. That was true. Also, his 4 quarters were sent in different parts of England and his head was hung on London bridge and was actually dipped in tar beforehand so that his face would be preserved and people would be able to recognise who was hung. Honestly if you're interested, I would just look up all the details on youtube of which elements are true and which elements weren't.

This movie does what The Patriot needed to do. It changes aspects of history to convey the real emotions the Scotts had. Years of oppression, and being absolutely disrespected by the English, are hard to convey in the first few minutes of an already 3 hour film. So, you add some fictional story elements of romance and exaggeratedly evil and oppressive laws to get the audience where they need to be to empathize with the Scottish without having to put them through an 20 minute M. Night Shamalan exposition dump, or narration/college lecture…. And that’s just the opening. Mel Gibson embellishes a lot to turn a really dark parts of history into inspiring epics. From Braveheart, to The Passion, to The Patriot, etc. he really does make good and entertaining films, that try to get the audience there emotionally, while not really relying on accuracy.

Some of these raids were by full armies large enough to take cities like York, and often the Scots has to be forced back North of the border, as they claimed Northern England as theirs. LOL slept with the Queen of England a child at the time, Garbage. Wallace was a member of the aristocracy, he and his men dressed just like their English counterparts, on the battlefield you could not tell them apart, except for their pennents. Not one aspect of the early Wallace story portrayed by Gibson, bears any resemblance to history its all made up, the only accurate part is that the English finally caught him and killed him, brutally, but it was the middle ages it was all brutal. Embellishes = blatantly lies

While still completely omitting the suffering of an entire people (the Welsh) whose aristocracy, autonomy and sovereignty was completely crushed by Longshanks prior to his Scottish dominion ambitions. Unlike the suffering of the Scots which was relatively short lived (far less than a full generation) the suffering of the Welsh never ended at all, and Wales remains as essentially a vassal state to the English/Scottish crown and their Westminster parliament to this day. You make a big bawl about the Scots but by comparison the English occupation of Scotland was a very short lived blip that Robert the Bruce basically witnessed begin and end in his lifetime. It's like going on about Cnut's short lived Viking occupation of Saxon England when the entire Viking age basically came to a close a generation after. Longshanks's occupation of Scotland ended up unifying it under Robert the Bruce to the point it was secure thereafter until the Scottish crown merged with the English one at the death of Elizabeth 1st.

A lot of people who watch this movie don't feel like Robert "earned" that leadership moment at the end, but IRL that battle occurred after a SEVEN YEAR revolt he led in the wake of Wallace's death, and he did indeed take the field himself to fight (even delayed the battle a day so more reinforcements could arrive by slaying one of the English commanders in a 1 vs 1 duel despite having a worse mount and weapon). The movie was already quite long though so they couldn't show all that though. Longshanks was a huge bastard (both figuratively and literally, dude was 6'4 and had super long legs, thus the nickname), he basically committed a genocide in Wales before shifting focus to Scotland. IRL he didn't throw the prince's friend out the window, but he did banish him from the realm for life (although he did return once Longshanks died).

The "nunchuck" was a farm tool used to thrash wheat and was supposedly used as a primitive flail by poorer soldiers that could not afford a war flail. It was a long stick with a chain on the end connected to a smaller stick, a easy cheap tool to make and functioned well enough as a simple weapon.

The "nunchuk" William used when he first took revenge for his wife's death is a flail. It's a farming tool used to thresh crops. There are bigger more badass versions that are actually weapons of war (like the huge one that had a spiked ball at the end of a chain the Witch King of Angmar wielded in the Lord of the Ring), but at this point William and the rest of the people only had access to farming tools and the like. Nunchuks are also weapons based on the farming flail because they were invented for the same reason as weapons based on farm implements the people had because the authorities had made owning actual weapons illegal, so the people developed martial arts and weapons based on simple tools they already owned. Flails, sickles, staves, etc.

Braveheart was the first epic I ever watched in cinema and as such takes a special place in my heart. I remember very well that during that year as a 15 year old kid and space/aircraft geek, I was totally hyped for "Apollo 13". A great movie aswell, for sure. But to my shock some strange movie called "braveheart took all the awards that year. Was a bit pissed first, but than my dad said "Know what? Let`s watch this movie and see what it`s all about. Aslong you come with me, they`ll let you in even if it`s PG 16. Let`s find out, if this movie is really that good." And damn, was that an eye opener. Seen alot of epics after that. Alot of them more "historicly accurate". But few came close to the rawness and, let`s face it, brutallity. Took some years and Steven Spilberg`s "Saving Private Ryan" to reset the benchmark. Fun fact aswell: This movie made me to choose Scotland as vacation location three years later for school finale when we had the choice of six countrys. And damn, is it a beautiful place, I can tell you that. The pictures in the movie don`t even come close to the real deal.
