According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason. William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded. The audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution. First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London. First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground. Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets. After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him. Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire. The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded. Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

Before being dragged by my friends to see Braveheart for the first time, I remember thinking to myself, "Come on, guys, can this thing honestly be good enough for a literal Oscar?" _After_ watching it, I just remember sitting there in stunned silence, thinking, "Uh,... is an Oscar good enough for *_this_* ?"

The scenes with Robert the Bruce and his father hit me the hardest. So much emotion, so much weight behind him wanting to believe and denouncing the ways of his father. "I don't want to lose heart!"

In a Director's commentary Mel Gibson pointed out he wanted to add more lighting to Robert The Bruce's face and redo the scene but he pointed out the inner conflict on his face from being half in darkness and halfway in the light. It subtlety enhances the entire scene so Mel G. left it alone because of these facts.

Same. It shows his evolution. He took a few steps forward, followed by a few steps back, but then forward again. It’s a more realistic look for someone who is seeking virtue but stumbles and falls along the way, but still presses forward.

The scene where Murron opens the handkerchief, and finds the thistle... first she's confused... then, like a lightning bolt, she realizes it was the SAME thistle flower... and she melts. One of my favorite movies, and that was one of my favorite scenes in ANY movie... This movie is a "love story for men". Guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy wrecks bloody vengence for her murder.... in the process gets another girl, and makes lots of awesome friends. OK, so, the ending, while predictable, isn't perfect from a love-story perspective, but still....

From a guys version of a RomCom I say the ending is perfect. He left a child in the home of his enemy (in that context a huge win for him), got a princess, fought for his country, and fell to betrayal rather than his own ego. In the end he kept his honor and integrity even under the most extreme circumstances. For men this was 10/10.

Fun fact: During the funeral scene the girl was initially meant to give William a rose. This raised eyebrows from one of the English historians who was helping out with the film, who pointed out that the Rose is England's National Flower. The Thistle is Scotland's National Flower. Which is why in that scene William is given the gift of a Thistle. Foreshadowing what he would one day do for Scotland.

@@hoddedman_ARG Hollywood seldom does well with history, and the few cases where they do, they tend to end up with a poor movie. A few of the movies that have been accurate and remained good films would be Glory and Hacksaw Ridge directed by Mel Gibson(where most of the inaccuracy comes from omitting some of Doss' heroic acts because they were afraid 'they won't believe it'). For Hollywood Historical Braveheart is about in the middle, certainly they have produced far less historically accurate films.

Mel Gibson knows how to pull certain heartstrings... he did the same thing in his movie "The Patriot" (and played fast-and-loose with history in both movies). If you like Sophie Marceau (the princess) in this... watch a little _comedy_ she did with David Spade called, "Lost and Found", to see what a great range she has. A very different character, but still lovable.

Always loved Mel Gibson as an actor, he did tons of great films, but this one...Damn, his magnum opus. Best direction and best performance of his career imo. The betrayal scene just gets me every time, it's so heartbreaking and you can feel his frustration, sadness and disbelief just by the look in his eyes. Fantastic movie

I was 13 when this movie came out on theaters, when it ended, everyone got up and applauded and it was really emotional, I'm from Nicaragua, a country that it's been ruled by didactorship so I understand the anger and frustration of Scotland back in those days unfortunately still happens

It is not even close to being historically accurate, but Braveheart is a truly great film nonetheless! As usual, Mel Gibson is fantastic. The story is totally captivating. And the reclamation of Robert the Bruce at the end is heartwarming. Robert the Bruce was a true Scottish patriot!

There are some historical inaccuracies , but the end execution scene was pretty much what was done in England , hang to near dead , cut genitals off , disbowel and then cut the head off ... but all is fine now , when England has a King and he is Scottish .

As a piper, I'm always reminded of that time when playing the bagpipes was a hangable offense. Much in the same way that clan tartans were forbidden as well, the English sought to suppress the culture at its roots. I've watched this movie at least 50 times in the last 25+ years and I've never once made it through without my cheeks covered in tears. Great choice and your reaction was genuine and heartfelt. The real history is that the Scottish king's heir (Margaret of Norway) had died at sea and died himself shortly after, Margaret was originally betrothed to King Edward's son Edward, so most of the Scottish nobility thought it was a good idea to have King Edward the protector of the Scottish crown until they could find a worthy heir, but King Edward had plans of his own, he gained the nickname "the hammer of the Scots" because of how brutal he was towards Scottish rebellion.

I cried so many times in this movie but the William’s death, crying out “Freedom”, Murron appearing in the crowd to greet him and comfort him, just wrecked me. First, when his brother and dad died with the flower, and at the end, she’s there to comfort him.

Isabella (The Queen) was a badass in her own right. She was known as The She-Wolf of France and basically led the effort to overthrow Edward II after he wound up in a stalemate with Robert the Bruce. She eventually succeeded, and had her son, Edward III, installed as King. As for Wallace, he was long dead before Isabella ever set foot on English soil.

I'm so happy that after scrolling down your comments, I don't see so much as one person whining about _historical accuracy_ which is unusual on a Braveheart reaction. Just remember that the people who whine because Mel Gibson took a mixture of myth, legend and definite fact and melded into a *Scotland is amazing* movie feel the need to point out the fictions for a very particular reason, and it reflects *very badly* on those people ☺

Really glad the number ended up as Braveheart. It is a brilliant film. A true inspirational story of fighting for freedom. Something everyone must do if our freedoms ever come under threat, because once you loose all yuor freedoms they will be incredibly hard to get back.

ILM did all of that, pls stop trying to give directors credit for the countless hours of work from the vastly more talented people he loves taking credit from - including the writers and directors of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, anyone would think Lucas did all of that the way they are advertised. If anything Lucas just took the guy (Douglas Trumbuil) that worked on 2001 and told him "make me a s**t load of that!"

Oh, and it wasn't Trumbull that did A New Hope. He recommended John Dykstra because he was working on Close Encounters. Get your facts straight before writing some angry screed.

Without him I doubt the company would've survived since they are connected a lot to Star Wars' financial success, which at least in large part was to Lucas's credit. I get if you're annoyed at people who just want to take credit, but I doubt Lucas is that guy. From what I've seen he's pretty down to earth and the people who praise him are actually other people.

In 1995 I went to see this in the cinema in Glasgow with my Norwegian friends. It was a sensation when it came out and won many Oscars. Even though it’s not entirely historically accurate it conveys the emotion felt by Scots perfectly. I now live in London close to the Tower where he was kept prisoner before he was executed. There’s a pub just across the road called the Hung, Drawn and Quartered…which is what happened to him. Great reaction. Thanks.

Bannockburn (1314) was fought over 2 days, not a single charge. But the Scots were indeed outnumbered 2:1

They won a great victory against Edward’s son Edward II (Edward I was dead). 
It still took about 10 years for the English to recognise Scottish independence but that battle showed they could not hold Scotland.

Robert the Bruce is the greatest king Scotland has ever had.

As a Scotsman who grew up with this movie (I was 11 when this released) It is easily in the top 5 best biopic movies ever made... Don't get me wrong, they did romanticise the historical story a fair bit (the whole romantic subplot with his wife and especially the princess is certainly not true lol) the movie still is a representation of the oppression of that time by England (again in those days everyone was oppressing everyone) One of my all time favs and I'm glad you loved it :)

"again in those days everyone was oppressing everyone" Looool - the Welsh weren't oppressing anyone, they were dead or crushed entirely flat by the campaigns of Longshanks previous to his interest in adding Scotland to his empire. Compared to the fate of the Welsh the Scots were practically running through meadows of flowers in paradise. By contrast Scotland suffered a short term if very bloody time in its history almost entirely down to internal squabbling of its own lords over the succession - with unity Edward I would have had nothing to exploit in the first place. The era of significant English lordship over Scotland didn't even last half a century while this film often gives an impression it is bucking the tail end of an endless dominion..... sooooo, Wales then? As the entire film is basically a gloriously inaccurate fanfic of Scottish history I don't see why he couldn't have just made a fantasy tale about the Welsh actually winning instead.

Well, this is indeed one of the best Oscar winners ever :) No questions asked! It has a perfect mix with action / romance plus beautiful pictures and amazing soundtrack. It is true that its somewhat historically inaccurate. A lot really lol But its still an amazing movie! Just, if you wish to know more about the real characters you do need to go read about them. For instance, princess Isabella had nothing to do with William Wallace, she was too young and not yet in England. However, she did have issues with her husband, and she did end up overthrowing him. So, their relationship and her threat towards the prince of wales were all very historically accurate. Just, they had nothing to do with William Wallace. It all happened later after Wallace was very much dead. Bruce is a real Scottish hero and it is him who actually has the nickname "Braveheart". It is somewhat accurate that his family had lands and tittles in both Scotland and England. Therefore, yes, they did play a mixed game. As did many other Scottish nobles. The problem with Scottish succession was a very real dynastic fight. Not that England was occupying them for ages. Just that Scotland got at a point where it was not clear who the next king should be. With a real threat of civil war, the English King Edward pretty much took the chance to come along and take control. Originally, he would only install like a puppet Scottish king, but things just escalated in a couple decades more or less. It did get to a point where Edward forcibly occupied Scotland, taking castles and installing his own vassals and men. Which then would lead to rebellions and Scotland wishing to have a proper independent king. Bruce ended up being the one in the end. Ohh, it was very much acceptable to use women as diplomats during the Middle Ages. Tough Isabella did not have such role with Wallace (she was a baby still in France), she might have had that role if she was already around and adult.

People saying this is historically inaccurate are of course correct, but I think are missing the point a little. William Wallace has status as a legendary character. In other words, even at the time, there was a large gap between the real man and the stories told about him. The scene in the movie where they're talking about how many men Wallace supposedly killed and it keeps increasing is probably the most historically accurate thing in the movie, as that's almost certainly how the tales would have gone. So from way back in the 13th century till now, it's hard to say what Wallace as a person was really like, and what all he actually did in between the relative handful of properly recorded facts/locations/dates regarding him. So the movie is a legendary style retelling of an already legendary character, and I think it works really well in that way.

Even though this is a romantic version of the story, Wallace was actually a military genius. The Battle of Stirling was actually Stirling Bridge, Wallace used the bridge to his advantage called a "Fatal Funnel". There is a movie with Chris Pine and Florence Pugh called OUTLAW KING about the King Robert the Bruce that's also pretty good.

It's not a romantic version, it's based on a Scottish poem written during a time when Scottish nationalism and Anglophobia was rampant, so it favours the Scots and demonizes the English. The reality is there were horrible things done from both sides, that's war

What's always gotten me is that the historical account of Wallace's execution were even more painful and graphic than the one in the movie. Hard to imagine someone enduring that. Also the ending makes it seem like Robert the Bruce lead them to victory right after the execution, but the war actually took 23 more years before England relinquished control on Scotland. They truly earned their independence.

Actually, Wallace was executed in 1305 while the Battle of Bannockburn, which Robert the Bruce led Scotland to victory over England occurred in 1314, nine years later.

What they show in the film of the 'purification', and execution was tame in comparison to what they actually did to Wallace. I really appreciate the way Longshanks was portrayed. Cruel, treacherous, very easy to hate. He's certainly not incompetent, or clueless though. A formidable enemy to be sure.

BRAVEHEART sucked all the oxygen out of the room in 1995, obscuring every other movie for recognition. But there was another released that year about a Scottish hero. He hailed from a different era than Wallace and his name was the same as the movie's title; ROB ROY. It starred Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange and Tim Roth and it is also quite good. In fact, I know some who rank it higher than BRAVEHEART. And I think you'd like it too.

Rob Roy is an very good and underappreciated movie. The sword fight between Liam Neeson and Tim Roth is regarded by some as one fo the better sword fights in movie history.

Rob Roy is excellent, but didn't do as well with American audiences because the dialogue was heavily 18th century "Scottish" and not a watered down version easily understood by American audiences.

The story about the princess goes deeper than we think. Her craving for love isn't just some young maiden infatuation: She was married to the prince, who was into men only, so he never loved her. With or without "prima nocte" law, the King probably took her to bed at some point. She never knew love, only abuse, so seeing Wallace love his late wife so much... well, we know the rest.

The movie is filled with inaccuracies, especially with the Princess. For one, she marred Prince Edward II more than 2 years after Wallace's death and never even met him. Edward II had 4 children with Isabella and one illegitimate through another woman, so saying he was only into men is incorrect.
