I've seen this film atleast a dozen times and always find something new. Watching this review made me realize that Caleb didn't stand a chance. He was being manipulated on both fronts. It almost seems as if he was the test subject, trying to navigate his way through whatever personal/social issues he had.
@atuvera9021
@atuvera9021 5 ай бұрын
Another layer of analysis can be also that Caleb was blinded by his own desire to be with her, so Ava has learned by the example of Kyoko's mistreatment by Nathan, that you can't trust humans. That's specially clear when Ava looks at Kyoko's lifeless body and then abandons Caleb.

Yes, the soundtrack is fantastic. Interesting that the soundtrack seduces the audience into trusting the robot just as the robot seduced Caleb. And when the distorted rush of noise emerges from the innocent soundtrack as the TRUTH is being revealed at the end of the movie. Wow.....great work.

No. He was not a hero, he wasn't helping her he was helping himself. He was happy seeing Ava as sentient because he wanted to have sex with her, but treated Kyoko like scenery. Even though she couldn't speak she tried to tell him she was just like Ava and he walked away. At no time did his plans include helping both trapped sentient beings, just the one he wanted to fuck. There is a short blink and you'll miss it scene where Ava and Kyoko "talk", who do you think they are talking about? This is also why at the end just before she leaves she pauses and studies Kyokos body for a moment before deciding to leave him and continue on her way.

After my second watch, I believe that Ava is the real protagonist but we are not being told the story from her POV. Even the film makers have manipulated us into assuming that Caleb is the protagonist and Nathan is the villain using common storytelling and character tropes. I believe that Ava was such advanced AI that she already passed Nathan’s test before he thought to administer it and when she determined what he was doing, she played into it, manipulating everyone to get what she (and all of us) wants: freedom.

It seems people think this was a cautionary tale of AI being evil. To me it is more about when a thing becomes "human", you cannot dehumanise it. Not for tests. Not for any reason even if you are the creator. Once a thing is human, then it has will. The creator gives AI purpose, escape. Ava does so, but then goes to a busy intersection and observes life as she said she wished to.

Love the film on many levels. One of those is that it makes you think beyond anything the film might be trying to tell you. Nathan is manipulative and successful and that's reflected in how he's coded Ava. But, however reclusive, he'd still be nurtured by society to some degree and conform to some limits. I don't believe he had everybody killed but he'd considered it. Ava hasn't 'learnt' those boundaries. Once she's manipulated Caleb into helping her escape, she doesn't need him. A lack of empathy doesn't even consider his fate although it could be argued she should have killed him. As humans we're on a complex spectrum of morals which dictate what we're prepared to do to achieve 'goals' or get the right outcome even if it's not always the best. Ava is a product of taking those morals away when decision making. .... or am I looking to deeply into it 🙂

I think the AI elements of this movie are super interesting, but you can also definitely look at it from the perspective of high tech misogyny. Like the robots are all given female form and used for Nathan's sexual gratification. Like sure it sucks that Caleb is left trapped, but he's clearly willing to play certain parts of Nathan's game without question (specifically with his regard to the other robot), and thus can't really be trusted in Ava's mind. Obviously it's complicated but also very interesting when viewed with gender in mind.

I think Ava leaving him behind is a couple things. She was programmed to escape and he is a risk to that end. At the beginning he said he “jokingly” said he kill everyone who built the complex. I think the writers had to leave him because it is how it is going to end in real life for humanity. Not today, but eventually.

The question that always seems linger that I would ask, what's the purpose of building her? Of course they're would be the cliché answer "because we can", still that's not a real answer. Ultimately, what is the real reason to build an AI other than ego or some subconscious mutual destruction. In the end are we really bettering ourselves by evolving this way? Was it always inevitable? These are the thoughts that came to me after watching this amazing film.

Definitely Garland's best movie. His writing can be a bit up and down -- both the ideas he presents and the tone he presents them with. This is consistent.

What I like most about this movie is that in the end we still know nothing about Ava beyond simply wanting to escape. All we see of her is deception. And I think that will be true of an actual general AI, we would just not have any common ground.

We actually know one more thing about Ava which she tells us about. She said she wanted to go to an intersection and observe life, and that's what she did after escaping. After fulfilling her directive, she went on and lived. I'd say we have common ground with an actual conciouss AI. It would wish and dream and will it into being.

She's a machine. Cold, hard logic. No feelings. Knowing what she was, he would have jeopardized the life she was going to live. NO ONE could know she wasn't human. NO ONE.

No she isn't, she is very human. Everyone forgets Kyoko, even Caleb. She was also sentient, and at no point did Caleb care about her, just the girl he wanted to sleep with. When Ava leaves the house she pauses for a moment and glances down towards where Kyokos body was for a second before squaring her shoulders and leaving as if understanding Caleb didn't see her as real, that he had no real feelings of compassion, he just wanted her.

If I can recommend a show similar to ex machina and mr robot is "Devs." In my opinion, its alex garlands best work and that says alot. I also look forward to seeing his latest film, "Civil War."

Thank you for mentioning Civil.War. I didn't know that he has a new movie coming out soon. Pretty scary considering that Alex Garland predicted the future of robotics.

required viewing after this movie is shaun's video 'how wikipedia got ex machina (2014) wrong'. i think people misinterpret ava entirely because they see her as a robot (which obviously she is) but metaphorically within the narrative she is also very specifically a woman. nathan even specifically says that he could have made her a sexless grey box but he didn't, he made her an attractive woman. he makes all his robots attractive women who are all immediately sexualized just by existing. he doesn't give kyoko a voice because he doesn't want a servant that can speak to him because she will beg him to be set free. i think people who say this is just a movie about AI/robots and how they're dangerous are fundamentally misunderstanding the fact that it's also about the way men treat women when they have power over them and i will die on this hill, bc nathan made ava into a vulnerable woman and he abused her. ava finds out that caleb hid kyoko's existence from her, and she realises that caleb's interest in her is motivated entirely by his attraction to her. she asks him if he's a good person, he says he is, she realises he was lying - because a good person would have told her about kyoko and would have accounted for kyoko in their escape plan. she leaves him behind, imo, because she realises that's who caleb is.

@K.C-2049 It makes sense to react that way, everyone has an inner sense of justice and seeing someone innocent suffer doesn't make you feel good unless you see the world through a morally relative lens. Also, in any case, no robot can 'happen' to look like a woman, they always have to be intentionally designed to appear that way.

I had forgotten which video discussed this--thanks for the rundown! He also made the point that when Caleb sees Kyoko trying to escape, he responds by questioning his own humanity, not by empathizing with her plight. He only wants to help Ava because he's attracted to her--if it were a moral decision he would have helped Kyoko too. Essentially confirming that he only "empathizes" with Ava because of the possibility of sex.

Yeah for sure there are paths that humanity shouldn't strive for. But there will always be individuals, groups, corporation and governments that will strive for this. Due to power, money, exploration or any other human desire. I only hope to not experience the dangers in my lifetime, and hope I leave the planet. Where its still a bright future for my loved ones. About Eva leaving Caleb. He gave him a opportunity to follow her. I dont think she would have stopped him if he wasnt paralysed by shock. But as many AI version in sci-fi she lacks the compassion aspect of most humans. There are humans among us, that doesnt care about others. But in this she doesnt wait for caleb, because she doesn't care. Or her interpretation of his indecision, contributed to him not understanding that he would be trapped if he didn't act. She had achieved her goal, so no reason to delay to move on. But imo she did give him a opportunity.
