I've seen people be far less emotional over it than Ali and Il Nam and while I understand that since she wasn't a part of the main cast and only introduced a few episodes earlier, but it was the saddest for me. It doesn't feel unfair and she doesn't seem sad, she accepted her death as a sacrifice and just thanks Sae Byok for the fun time she had

@@joshuazerbe5777 Wow, thanks for sharing that. I like their translation for American audiences due to the mainstream culture (IMO) lacking in gratitude & honor, but heavy on competition & individualism. Any American understands finding “someone to play with.” That being said, if you understand those states/emotions, the literal translation is much more powerful. I once had someone from SE Asia bow & thank me for including them in an event & the very force of their gratitude blew me over, almost physically

The word is hyung (형). Ali was calling “hyung” while looking for Sang-woo. Captions mistranslated it and took some of the edge out of the betrayal for me. I have Korean family members who explained a lot of the more nuanced things lost in translation. This was a big one. Ali was kind hearted and easily manipulated. He looked up to Sang-woo.

@@fxbear I don't think it was a mistranslation. In order to use the word ''hyung'' in the subtitle, they would have to inform the viewers the whole meaning on Korean culture. People who are not used to Korean culture would be confused if they just see the word hyung.

Yo, I didn't cry at this one! It was sad, sure, but I think since I approached the show from the start knowing there would be only one survivor made me not willing to attach fully to the characters. I also didn't feel like the Jiyeong/Saebyeok story was as sad as everyone made it out. It felt like Jiyeong was introduced solely to be a crutch to humanise Saebyeok's character. She had practially all her development and death within the same 20 minutes. I did feel sad, don't get me wrong, but definitely didn't break down from it. Tears were shed in later episodes, though...

Gotta say, I bawled like a baby. It was so hard, for me specifically since my grandpa died from a brain tumor and they got it perfect. That was exactly how he was, go in and out of memories and knowing what was happening to not knowing anything or anyone's name. The most vivid for me was right before he died, he looked over and remembered us and told us he loved us then passed. So this brought up a lot of that pain. But god damn, the episode was perfect.

Everyone talks about Ali (and deservedly so; he was done super dirty) but it's Ji-Yeong who really got to me. Ali at least got to experience some life and family and was undone by his own failings, namely his naivety. Ji-Yeong had everything stolen from her while still a child, probably never experienced anything like happiness in her entire life, and still found the courage and humanity to choose to sacrifice herself because it was the right thing to do.

Makes sense that they didn't show the husband/wife team, because we wouldn't feel much watching them, we haven't really spent much time on screen with them at all, other than we've seen them, but we don't know anything about them, no back stories, nothing. So I guess there are two ways to think about this series. One, we can stay detached and feel superior to the people playing the game, like it could never be us, because we aren't in so much debt, or even if we were, we would never resort to that, because of our good character and our good decision making. Or two, this could totally be us, because anyone can have massive debt, the only reason we don't is because life has smiled on us, we are just very lucky people. I am in the second column, sometimes you get in debt even if you do everything right. The fact that they all chose to come back and play the game, that is so vitally important, because if we just continued from the first time, then we would feel so badly for everyone who chose to stop the game but had to continue because they were outvoted.

I guess the game designer might have thought coming in with someone you could trust (like the husband and wife) was an unfair advantage. This game eliminates that advantage. Furthermore, the more noble are likely to be taken out while the more conniving survive. There will be no unionising, no solidarity between contestants. They get to talk about equality, but really divide, conquer and have everyone behave like crabs in a bucket.

I was thinking about his wife too. She would go on in life always thinking what happened to Ali, never knowing if he chose to abandon them, got kidnapped, or died. No closure and probably oscillating between having hope that he might return one day and accepting that he wont. He just became another missing person in the world..

I love this show, but Korean cinema does tend to turn the stereotypes up to 11.

I stopped watching after this episode, too... But I figured - if I can make it through Game of Thrones - I can make it through this... Glad I did, it was worth it and a season 2...

The thing is, we all would like to think that we'd be noble and decent in a game like this, but the bottom line is, YOU ARE FACING CERTAIN DEATH if you lose. What would you do, what would you sacrifice, how far would you go to stay alive one more day? I think that a lot of viewers lost sight of that because they became emotionally attached to the characters. The players knew, going in that there could be only one winner and that the rest would die. So, I stopped feeling so sorry for the characters after Episode 4 when they started murdering each other. This is the game they've chosen, knowing the costs. Betrayal may be ugly and sad, but it's not against the rules. And as a side note, I think that gambling is one of the themes of the show, but what it's really about is capitalism run amok, excess and greed.

Nope, nooooope! Do not want James on my team for this one. I was kinda naive and unaware on previous episodes, but as soon as they said "pick a partner", I knew "They're gonna make us kill eachother!" Nah dude, the world needs your mind. I could'nt pit me vs you
