There’s another ending in the movie. In the original UK release, all of what Sarah saw of Juno was a dream. After that, it cut back to her in the cave still trying to get out. The US release took that cut out because the audience thought it was too depressing and didn’t want to feel the hopelessness of it.

Hey, James! Great selection! Not everybody gets this movie on the first pass. I first saw "The Descent" in a theater and have seen it many times since! It's one of my favorite recent horror movies. Originally, this film was a sensation on the festival circuit before shocking indie arthouse crowds! A lot of people miss the brief exchange of looks between Juno and Sara's hubby at the raft which Beth notices and you spotted. The implication is that Juno is having an affair with Sara's husband! The atmospheric lighting, the claustrophobic setting and the character development are what make this film work so well. The unspoken mistrust between the girlfriends, Sara's psychological trauma and the survival drama of a cave-in in an unmapped subterranean environment all blend to create a layered screenplay that is fraught with tension even before the ghouls appear! The creature design is amazing. Their origin as a devolved offshoot of humanity is shrouded in mystery. The rules of the hunt are quickly established. The gore, saliva and excrement are beyond disgusting. Watching the ladies become as savage as their predators is a wicked delight! Sara, already fragile going in, snaps early on but it gives her lucidity and she adapts to the new rules quickly becoming like Col. Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now". Encountering and mercy-killing Beth gives her a mission: revenge. Juno is the best character. She is deeply flawed but well-meaning in her effort to make amends. She did cheat on her friend but had to grieve her lover's death in isolation. Her good-faith effort to reunite the gang with a grand adventure goes terribly awry because of her reckless choice to go off the beaten path without notifying local rangers. It's a fatal error in judgment to not put that decision to the group. Her murder of Beth is purely a horrific accident. Her abandonment of Beth is done out of shame, guilt and fear. Yet, Beth and Sara misinterpret the act as cold-blooded murder. I love the last image of her limping but defiant against impossible odds. The death of the girls' friendship is as painful as any of their violent demises. You see a female ghoul in the abbatoir/latrine lake! These critters obviously never heard you don't sh*t where you eat! Lol. I wish you had seen the preferable alternate UK ending. Sara doesn't get out but goes completely mad! After leaving Juno, she takes a spill and the escape sequence plays out as in the US version. However, after being shocked by the Juno revenant, she recovers from her spill still trapped underground unwinding her limbs just like one of the ghouls and fully immersed in a delusion that reunites her with her daughter. The camera pulls back to reveal her staring at the empty space occupied by her daughter in her mind. She is on a ledge in a huge cavern filled with ear-splitting howls. Will she become the new Queen of the Ghouls or will she eventually fall prey to one of the shrieking beasts? That's left for you to decide. Director Neil Marshall previously did the werewolf movie "Dog Soldiers" and went on to direct "Doomsday", "Centurion", the comic-accurate "Hellboy" reboot and "The Reckoning" about 17th-century witch trials. He also helmed two major battle episodes on "Game of Thrones": The Battle of Blackwater Bay and The Siege of the Wall. Additionally, he directed the premieres of the incredible pirate show "Black Sails" and the time-travel show "Timeless".

14:10 Haha! Thank you! "Throw her off a cliff! She needs to be sacrificed!" That was my feelings exactly in that moment, when I first watched this movie. She is a Classic but terrible Narcissist! "It's a new system! I wanted is to discover it for ourselves!" So she lies & keeps everyone in the dark. No. She did that for herself. And she basically sacrificed all her "friends". Even if there were no monsters, the possibility of them making it out of an unknown cave system unharmed or even alive, goes down at least 50%, for all of them, due to possible cave-ins, unknown instabilities in the system, no map, directions, or guide, & any number of ways to die in such a place. And no one knows they are there. Or where they are. She basically cursed them all. And when Holly ran on ahead, & got hurt, I think she was totally in a panic. She was the newest in the vroup, the least experienced, & had previously looked up to Juno as a mentor. Now she's suddenly learned, after the fact, that Juno was a raging Narcissist who could not be trusted, & they are trapped in an unknown cave system. She lost faith in Juno, & then just panicked. 🤷‍♀️

The crazy thing is, the majority of wide shots in the movie are of the same rock wall they made for the sets. So the wall behind them in the beginning of the cave, is the same one for the rest of the movie. Super clever way to not waste resources

I LOOOVE this movie. It's so much fun. There's the thrill of the claustrophobia, the badass women, the unexplored cave, the gremlins. The character backgrounds aren't the main focus, you could have 80-90% of the same movie without it, but they actually add so much to the film. So many cool uses of setting and sound. The director has another fun movie called Dog Soldiers. It takes a more self-aware, fun approach, but it's still scary and brutal.

This is probably my favorite movie set design and lighting out of any horror movie from this era if you haven't please watch the behind the scenes for this one. It is so cool the lengths they went to to portray the caverns and make sure that the lighting feels naturalistic and only coming from sources that exist when in the scene.

According to Wiki: "While The Descent is set in North America, the film was shot entirely in the United Kingdom. Exterior scenes were filmed in Scotland, and interior scenes were filmed in sets built at Pinewood Studios, near London. The cave was built at Pinewood because filmmakers considered it too dangerous and time-consuming to shoot in an actual cave. Set pieces were reused with care, and filmmakers sought to limit lighting to the sources the characters bring with them into the cave, such as helmet lights." Amazing set design...amazing.

This film is one that I hope is shown in film schools as it is a masterclass in economy. The total budget was £3.5m (yes, the decimal point is correct!), or about a quarter of what Robert Downey Jr was paid to be in Doctor Doolittle to put it in context! It does so much with minimal fanfare though, like establishing the affair in a couple of shots, and how well they set up the camaraderie of the group with a few minutes of interaction on the raft and in the cabin, and for me the real genius is how they shot on a soundstage using polystyrene blocks that they'd re-arrange for different places, and change the look of it by using different light sources (which also helped the audience figure out who they were following when it changed between people). There is so much done so well, and so simply that it would maybe be a fantastic example for anyone studying film. Slightly disappointed you got the US ending - it was changed for the US market because Neil Marshall was given the choice of it showing in 50 cinemas nationwide in the original cut, or in something like 800 with the shortened ending. For me, the original ending is stronger as the escape feels a little cheap. PS - one thing I never noticed until the directors commentary is that they have the wrong road markings in that post escape scene by the road. it's the UK single broken line rather than the US double yellows that you'd get in Appalachia, it's one of the few technical errors in the film, I guess they didn't have the budget to either repaint the road or to fix it in post

I went cave diving once just outside of Budapest in Hungary. These caves had actually sheltered Jews who lived there in the dark for months hiding from Nazis during the war. On the trip, a member of our party got stuck sluicing through the tunnels right ahead of me. She panicked, which then led to everyone behind me panicking. I put my hands behind her feet so she would have something to push off of (this tunnel was very slippery). It eventually worked, but not before she kicked me in the face and split my nose wide open. Fun times!

The story of the creation of Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, featuring John Malkovich as F.W.Murnau (the director) and Willem Dafoe as Max Schrek (the actor who played Count Orlok). Some scenes feature the original footage from Nosferatu spliced with new footage they shot for the film, and it's totally seamless. The story behind the film is fascinating too. Even if James doesn't get to it, you (yes you, reading this now) should.

Great reaction as always, definitely one of my favourite horrors. If you're taking recommendations, you should finish the cornetto trilogy if you haven't already, the last film is 'The Worlds End'.

As someone who’s extremely claustrophobic by the time the monsters showed up I was already dialed up to a 10. Honestly they were a welcome relief 😂

I've done mountaineering, rock and ice climbing but I'll never do scuba or caving. When the navy recruiter mentioned sub duty, i walked over to the army guy.

If you need scary recs for the Halloween month, in my personal opinion, "Oculus" is a great pick! It's more of a psychological thriller/paranormal-ish movie, but I just think that the plot and ending are so interesting and tragic. Definitely one of my favorites!

This is set in the Appalachians in the US. I believe Scotland was a trip spot they referenced during the early conversations.

I'll throw in my suggestion for a tv show reaction for next october: the terror. Atmospheric, eerie, beautifully made survival/horror show set against an arctic backdrop

2005 was the year of horror cave movies. This one and well.... The Cave. Two different movies, neither one really bad. I like the psychology and brutallity of The Descent though, with the European ending, not this crappy US ending. The Cave was more of a monster movie with a couple of dudes, with a cool twist.

Requesting: Mars Express It's a wonderful French animated sci fi movie that just came out. I'm sorry you got the updated ending of The Descent. The original has a different vibe that many prefer. You really got this one

This is one of my favorite horror movies, probably top ten. I do cave exploring, so it was right up my alley. James if you liked this, you really need to watch The Relic, another one of my top ten.

One you might really like is The First Omen, has some fantastic cinematography and framing while still being very spooky.

The hunt (2020) a film about rich bishes kidnapping and hunting whyte trash. Starring Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Ethan Suplee, Glenn Howerton and a bunch more that dont get as much screen time as the already listed. Really good and underrated.

I'd like to see James react to "Dog soldiers", which was made by the same writer/director (Neil Marshall). It's another exciting, original horror film with an intriguing story and really good acting and characterisation.

Great film review! Another great film for this type of year that not many reviewers have done is As Above, So Below... great thriller about the Paris Catacombs, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one!

I’m huge into horror. But for 20 Years.. this has been at the top of the list for one of the best horror films. Fight me. You can say, “best female horror role.” No. Straight up best horror protagonist.
