I like the show's mix of empathy with the cold-blooded and impassive nature of the world they are in. Like the way they casually dispose of that infected child, but when the kid is still alive, they raise his spirits right up until his moment of death. They didn't have to to the latter, considering the kid will be gone in minutes, but they still do. It keeps the humanity of the people alive while also not pulling things like letting the kids survive to take it easy on audiences.

@@cohenparsons947Explain to me, in detail, what your issue with Part 2 is. Because I can guess it in two tries.
@cohenparsons947 Жыл бұрын
@@aerthreepwood8021 Ellie's motivation to hunt down Abby ends up making her just as unlikable as Abby is. Having a game where both characters you play as are unlikable, and doing bad things that the game is telling you is bad is bad storytelling. Abby is never made likeable enough with the forced helping the scars and stuff and most people who got to the fight between Abby and Ellie wanted to lose that fight. Telling the story non-chronologically was a mistake as it allowed the Ellie and Joel scenes too posthumous and didn't allow us to really understand Abby's motivation for killing Joel. Ideally the story would have Dana with Joel and it shouldn't have killed Joel but had him be crippled and Dana be kidnapped (mistaking her for Ellie who they believe could be used to make a vaccine), giving Ellie motivation: to save someone instead of getting revenge; While also allowing Abby to not be as unlikable as she doesn't go all the way killing Joel.
@tmm4195 Жыл бұрын
@@cohenparsons947 I mean that's kind of the point. Abby and Ellie aren't that different. Whether you find them unlikeable or not all comes down to how you perceive them. Some people find them unlikeable. Other people feel for them and completely understand their point of view. Also, having the Joel and Ellie flashbacks after everything went down (not saying what went down to avoid spoilers for anyone) made more sense because those are the memories that motivated and pushed Ellie to seek revenge. First it showed the good times she had with Joel like at the museum. Then the flashbacks slowly started to show a more negative and distant relationship between Joel and Ellie which represents Ellie's guilt. If they showed all the flashbacks beforehand it wouldn't feel the same. I can guarantee you they are not going to change much from season 2, but honestly, I could see the 2nd season working better as a tv show than as a game.

Love how the show plays with the viewers expectations of what happened in the game to build tension. Like, the bang on the window being a dog, not infected. The suddenly flash of headlights coming from the left not causing the crash. Like, the show does a beautiful job matching shots and moments in the show to the game-and overall, keeping the same key events which shift the narrative into a new scene-but still places deviations in such a way that it returns tension to the narrative for viewers who played the game.

@robert_bbiii Жыл бұрын
The intro to Tess in this is great. She is basically being help prisoner by Robert and his men but totally running the show. Also this episode does a good translation of the medium by not doing the stealth mission for the battery. In the game you need to introduce the mechanics. In a show you don't need to.
@jasonmarbach Жыл бұрын
Also, Marlene is played in the show by the same actor who played her in the game. A bunch of the original voice actors have appearances…including Troy Baker, who plays Joel in the game, and Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie in the game, as well as Laura Bailey (various voices in game 1, including the role she reprises briefly in a surgical gown and mask in the finale of this season, not to mention the starring role she plays in the sequel game which she won a BAFTA for), and Jeffrey Pierce, who plays Uncle Tommy in the game…basically all of them show up in this show. But only Merle Dandridge gets to reprise her actual character from the game in the show.
@jasonmarbach Жыл бұрын
If you wanna keep an eye out for them all (I already called out where to spot Laura Bailey), watch for Jeffrey Pierce as a moderately significant character in eps 4 & 5 (he has a beard), watch for Troy Baker (so cool to see him in live action!) in episode 8 opposite the sickest, grossest character in the whole show (not a spoiler, you played the game, you already know about David 😬), and then Ashley Johnson gets to play literally the perfect, most amazing possible character in the opening scene of the finale of the season.

It's such well-placed details, and so widely spread I'm sure everyone has picked it up by now, but I'm gonna type it down anyway; The reason Joel, Sarah and Tommy don't get infected like their neighbors or later on in the show, is that from the moment we see them on screen, they don't eat or touch a single product containing grain, which is where the infected mold lives and gets spread from. Their breakfast is eggs and bacon(sausage?) but no bread. Neighbor offers them biscuits and cookies which they never accept. Joel forgets the birthday cake mix so there's no cake to be had. It's never focused on, but a brilliant background detail. Oh and one more "That's from the game!" Sarah's shirt in the series is game accurate :)

So all the landscape used was from my home Province of Alberta, Canada. It was the biggest ($$$ wise) production to ever be filmed here. We have had other films and TV shows done. But nothing on this scale. A lot of downtown Calgary was used, as well as the Capitol building in Edmonton. A lot of filming was done in and around the town of Cochrane, where they even closed off sections of it to film for about a month or so. They had to pay the shops in the area a rate of $1000 a day I think? So please enjoy all the epic scenery and landscapes Alberta has to offer. Edit : Also at 15:12 where Joel's daughter finds the Grandma infecting the neighbours is almost a shot for shot homage to the opening kill of Resident Evil 1 where you also first meet the zombies. Which according to the Director or Screenwriter is why no one says Zombies. That because there was no Night of The Living Dead and its offsoots to prepare people for this.

The set design of this series is simply phenomenal. It is the first series that actually looks truly and believably post-apocalyptic without resorting to bad lighting or colour filters. (with one exception coming later on which looked not good at all)

One of the greatest adaptations ever put to film. Glad to see a new face in the crowd. Can't wait to hear your take on the series as a whole.
