There's a background tidbit that I read about, the shrine dance the girls perform actually contains steps and movements from traditional dance that actually tell the story of the comet, but because all the history was destroyed no one knew what was coming. That's why the gods chose to pass the message the way they did.

@SparkyAllMighty 3 жыл бұрын
Not for me. While Weathering with you is undeniably a good anime I feel like it piggy backed off the success of Your Name but ultimately failed to recreate that lightning in a bottle. A Silent Voice stands on it's own as a great anime and for me personally punched me in the gut harder than either your name or weathering with you simply because it doesn't require supernatural powers/intervention but is just pure raw human interaction that is rooted in reality. Although for some reason it confused the hell out of our guy here when he watched it. Couldn't understand how he got so confused!

fun fact: The reason Taki didn't write his name on Mitsuha's hand is because he realized it would be erased just like the memories about them are when they switch back. He wanted to write something so at least then she has one memory that won't be erased even though she can never connect it to him.

@@avourrito1819 Yea as pointed out you answered your own question there, he wrote what he wanted but also he was smart enough to figure out anything that gave away who they are was going to be erased (much like the diary entries were) so writing his name literally would've been pointless, so he opted to write what he wanted to say and to give her one good solid memory that couldn't be taken away

@@SignedK Like Miyazaki films, I've found that sometimes, I find myself in the mood of certain Makoto Shinkai films. It's the story, visuals, overall mood, and pacing (the Japanese film making style of just "pausing to breathe" and taking in the present moment is the best way I can put it). I definitely recommend watching the others as well. Also, watching your reaction to Your Name actually made me re-live my first watch too, and the film maker commentary makes me really curious to hear your thoughts about Shinkai's other movies. :)

Here's a few things you might missed: -first. You remember the beginning (and the end too) where they talk about having a dream as if something's missing as they get ready for work? Notice how after they wipe their tears they stop to look at their hands... It's the same hand they tried to write each other's name on. -In China and Japan there is an idea of an invisible red string connecting two destined lovers. Hence symbology of the string. There are other colors on the ribbon that represent other things too. The center white diagonal stripe symbolizing the comet, the blue around it for the lake(s), etc. -There's also this big thing about how the god their family worship is actually a fraction of the comet that's given their family powers to save the village. That's how they have the dance and the tradition to honor their god. The comet actually came at least twice before. To make the lake and the god's underworld shrine. Both times also created craters. So the god gave the family there power to save it's people. -And the BIG Whopper. Mitsuha wasn't going to write her name on Taki's hand. There are a few ways to write her name, the first, Kanji, can be read in multiple ways and is kinda complicated to write in the small time they had, so she wouldn't write it that way for a first meeting. The second way, Hiragana starts similarly with a straight left to right stroke, but we see her in the beginning writing in hiragana her name with a curved stroke, not a straight stroke. 7:42 in your clip. Instead the theory is she was planning on writing 'Suki da'. Which is written like this: すきだ ("sukida") And while you probably don't recognize it, it was actually in the movie. Specifically 23:26 in your clip. Yep, they were going to write the same thing. And yes, makoto Shinkai, the director admitted Mitsuha would have revealed her feelings than write her name down when asked in a Q&A

Props for highlights this! I haven't seen this interview/QA, so would be super interested. I remember on my second watch, when Mitsuha says "I can't remember your name with that" (I love you) thinking that she wasn't gonna write her name either with that stroke :D But didn't go back to confirm in the movie. Good eyes!

Fun fact, the Japanese title has a double meaning it's called Kimi no Na wa which still means Your name, but Na is a rather queer reading for Namae which is the proper word for Name. They used Na because if you say the title quickly it reads Kimi no Nawa which means Your String which has a pretty heavy symbolism.

I find it very interesting that he said that the comet granted Mitsuha's wish. Mitsuha's wish was granted by "the God of Weaving(Ame-no-Haduchio-no-Kami)" whom she worships. "The God of Weaving" is a strong and benevolent God who exterminated the "God of Comet" with her golden shoes for the sake of her people. In Japan, comets are ominous, but in the West they are wish-granting items.

29:56 There is a theory that the whole film is just them getting back their memories. Like when they see each other in the trains they regain their memories (the film for us viewers). But than you could ask why they were so akward at the stairs if they remembered. That is explained by how ridiculous there memories must be like with switching bodies and so they werent sure if these memories were real. So they ask than for their names to be sure that it was real and that the other person is really the one from their regained memories.

I was in the edge of my seat right from the start. But as I remember I guess I cracked with the "I love you" wrote in Mitsuha's hand. When she opens the hand and she and all of us expect to see the name she is forgeting but instead is "suki"... oh man... I felt a spear in my heart. It's such a beautiful sweet teenage moment. The smoothness of Taki to do it and the consequences. And it adds to what you said about "we are with then, not just watching". Everytime a moment lioke that happens to the characters, we are also discovering thing together with then. In the end I cried like a baby too... the build of expectations seem how Taki's life evolved since and not knowing if they will find each other is masterfully done. Also, the bitter in this end is being 34 years old and knowing that, most part of the time, people will not find each other agains. We'll most likely be traped in the strings then float with then. =/ But that is my sinical sad view about it... it's still heat warming to watch. =')

The name of the town, Itomori (糸守) contains two kanji, the first one is "thread" and the second one has multiple meanings, "guard", "protect", "defend" and "obey", the combination could be "defending the thread" of time, or "defended by the thread", or "obey the thread" that binds Mitsuha and Taki, or "obey the thread" of time, etc. The name was chosen deliberately for reasons I haven't seen Shinkai talk about yet.

🎞 Watch the FULL LENGTH REACTION on Patreon : www.patreon.com/signedk Hey everyone🙂 ! BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ! By popular demand know that I WILL be reacting to both "I want to eat your pancreas" ⭐️ and "Weathering with you" ⭐️. The first being "I want to eat your pancreas" althought it will not be posted before April 5th, and "Weathering with you" will follow maybe two or three weeks later as there are other movie genres I'd like to check out first before going back to some anime movies, but I will, now you know 😄 ! In the meantime I'm still reacting to Attack on Titan of course 🙃 Thank you for your patience ! Have a nice day everyone 👋 !

There is two other movie that have connection with this one. First one is Garden of Words, this movie female MC make a cameo in Your Name as Mitsuha teacher. The second one is Weathering with You, Mitsuha and Taki make a cameo in this movie. You should try to react to it. My other recommendations is Maqua, it's a really underrated movie. The writer of Your Name even felt jealous to this movie because he can't make the kind of movie that Maqua is.

Watched this movie a dozen times at least, and just finished rewatching which is why I'm back here watching reactions again lol. And I can confirm, every time I watch this I feel exactly the same. It's got a magic about it that few other movies have managed, and had an effect on me that few others have had. Might be my favourite movie of all time.

I recommend watching "Maquia: when the promised flower bloomed" because Makoto Shinkai himself said it was a beautiful movie. . . an underrated anime movie that made the director and writer of "Your Name" jealous of its stunning story (He said it himself). . . in my opinion, it does live up to how Makoto Shinkai praised it to be so try giving it a watch! Edit: or maybe try watching the trailer
