Excellent presentation. Clearly presented with an eye to expanding on what the 2 best experts on editing say. My only note would be to clarify that Walter Murch was presenting a top ten list for each single cut. The most important thing to consider at the cut point is number one. If any of the others are included all the better.

Read "in the blink of an eye" if you're interested in editing. Funny enough I always tried to find that book since film school. Never found it, but never made the effort to order it online or anything. That was 2002, 2016 I found it at a local chapters (I checked almost overtime I was there) FINALLY got it. Now in the time between I started to look for the book to when I found the book I was working as an editor on various different genres. Advertising, event, TV, documentary and film. Reading the book after having practiced the craft for way more time than when I was fresh in school really helped me understand the core concepts of this book on a 3D level. You know that level where you're just like "ya that's neat" but I can actually confirm the existence of these rules and the practice of say "thinking some shot on initial screening is useless - only to find out that later in the editing process that shot is exactly what the scene needs"...Anyway i'm rambling, but I love talking shop (editing specifically) so when I see something as detailed and high level as this vs "how to do a palm to camera lens transition in premiere" I tend to yak a bit more than i should in the comments ;)

I disagree with him at 5:47, he says that if you go against the vibe that has been established in the scene or in the film itself, that is bad. I disagree with this because this affect (going against the tone) can be used in comedic ways. Sudden tone changes in scenes will almost always result in a laugh, if done right of course.

How does a cut support an emotion or vibe? The other 5 rules are easy to understand but a cut that supporting viewers' emotion, how is this evaluated? By making a cut now or later, by changing a shot from here to there, how would editing support or say ruin an emotion atmosphere?
@dhruvaprasaddevara19675 жыл бұрын
Walter Murch lists those editing techniques in the order of priority and less as rules. He himself says as they get lower and lower on the list,the 'rules' above them are more important. So Adam saying only the first one is important 'according to him' does not even make sense.

You mean editing isn't just cutting out the slates!??!?! ;) JK I know it's not, editing tv/doc/films for 15 years and that's the general job description from quite a few in the industry which baffles me. Editing being the final re-write of any film is a highly creative and complicated roll. There's reasons big directors have their "go to editors" ... short hand and creative simpatico/problem solving is essential...cause lets be honest, nothing ends up on the screen as it was written or in some cases shot. Great content Film Riot...genuine and honest/informative.

Why is cinematic editing any different then anything else?
@abisz0070077 жыл бұрын
Its not cinematic editing vs uncinematic editing as a style choice. When you do uncinematic editing, your editing is not deliberate. Inside cinematic editing you can choose between different styles, for example choppy (draw attention to a cut, (documentary style)) or go with the flow (hide the cut, (matchcuts, cut on action)) but it always need to be a conscious decision to help tell the audience what they need to know.
@IrbinMedina7 жыл бұрын
Because there many types of videos people make that do not require much thought. For example, vlogging. You would not want to edit a movie the same way you edit a vlog. That's just one example of non-cinematic editing.
@MeloFloww7 жыл бұрын

@thekaiser43337 жыл бұрын
Cinematic editing is in head editing before the actual shoot. Watch Hitchcocks "Rope". Documentary editing is using what you've got to make it look good and tell the story. In short, d.e. is more about what you see and c.e. is more about what you not see.

Great stuff. Hitchcock's presentation was kinda boring, but his message was great. Impressionistic approach. Love that. The 6 editing tips were also cool. Sometimes we get so caught up in putting in all shots we think are necessary without thinking of how it ties in with the emotion and story we want to deliver. Have to kill off ya babies sometimes, as he mentions :)
