I ran into him recently at the RED Store in Hollywood, and he was extremely nice! Of course I asked to take a quick picture with him, but he even took the time to ask me about my filmmaking and what I like to do. Huge fan of Vincent!!

Yes, I was impressed with the session he did with photographers and cheap cameras. He really took his time and waited for the decisive moment. His pics were some of the best in the series.

YES! I love the first example!! - it's so incredibly rare to hear lectures or mentions of the importance of the ADs when it comes to movement on screen. The creativity of our roles (directing all the extras) is always overlooked and under taught and rarely understood. Every aspiring director, producer, DP should watch this - a good AD makes your movie look more natural and more cinematic!

Could watch these examples all day. Love it! 1. Energize the frame. 2. Motivated movement. 3. A little counter movement. Got it. Wicked!

"I read this 7 years ago in a book". I watched this 6 years ago on film riot and it became my go to technique while filming ANYTHING. Even event coverage, I slap on my zoom lens and get a wide medium and close version of each shot to help create a dynamic edit.

Everyone is complaining to much in the comments about stuff being promoted... promoting their stuff is something I will always fully support, I own most of their digital downloads and love them! In fact I recommended them in my last video! I thought this was great advice, just not for your everyday run and gun shoot. And sure I much prefer videos made by film riot and not this kind of video, but give them a break, ryan just had a seconds child, so he's not sleeping and has to be pretty stressed. XD

Their own stuff? Absolutely, that's fine. But then going on to advertise *both* MZed and domain.com back-to-back perhaps crosses the line. The worst part is that the domain.com ads are now so overbearing that they've gotten to be counter productive. When I first discovered FilmRiot I must have binge watched something like 30 episodes, and if I learned nothing else from the experience it's that I never *ever* want to hear the name domain.com again in my life and I most certainly won't *ever* be purchasing a domain from them! There must surely be large proportion of the 1M subscribers who are similarly sick of their lengthy repetitive ads. For any regular viewer, if we haven't bought from them already, each repeat of the ad only makes us ever less likely to do so in the future.

This is an awesome refresher on this info! I got to see this live, and meet Vincent when he did a panel at WPPI in Vegas. He talked about how he broke his arm (still broken at the time), and used his downtime as inspiration to study all these films. He then created the Directing Motion Tour. I was waiting for someone to mention his work! Thanks guys!

The first thing we bought when we were brainstorming ideas to bring our productions to the next level was a dolly, just to give us a boost in production value. While we're certainly not going to be doing any jib shots with just a dolly 9like in the E.T. example), there was definitely some good stuff here about motivating camera movement with actor movement, and then having objects or characters counter the movement for some added interest. Good stuff!

I don't mean to brag but this is what I do naturally. I cannot help it. I cannot see things any other way. When I'm directing, I get most excited when I'm staging/blocking a camera movement with many moving parts either motivating or countering the move. I'm also good at editing in my head so I usually get all the shots I need to edit it. I also most execute master oners like your "Empire of the Sun" example at 10:06. Some people don't need to be taught this... It just makes sense. BTW, I love how you animated the blueprints of the camera movement. Love, love, love that. I might start doing something like that for the next DP I work with...

Hi Ryan, congrts and blessing for the baby first. And then THANKS for all these knowledge and entertainment you are giving us. Here in India (Jodhpur, Rajasthan) I am working on a low budget film, will be in production by mid November '17. I am using Canon 550D with a 50mm f1.8 and a 24mm 2.8 lens. I also have the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-250, but I don't think I will use them. Though my question to you is about the audio. I have a Zoom H6 and a shotgun mic, I want to sync the line out audio from Zoom to DSLR, but working with cables is a real mess. And I am not sure that what I am looking for, is available or not! All I need is a audio transmitter that take the line out signals from Zoom and transmitted these to DSLR wireless. Can you help me with that!
