I do think that Evil Dead II was a much bigger upgrade in 4K than this first film, but I agree that it does still benefit from 4K HDR. I didn’t own any of them, so I got the 4K steelbook with ED 1 and 2. Though if Army if Darkness is coming out in 4K, I might have to upgrade my Blu Ray because that is my favorite of the trilogy lol (as long as the 4K includes ALL of the different cuts like my Blu Ray does, I hope so)

Does this 4K include the "fixes" that were featured on the Blu Ray? Like the tubes that sprayed blood and the crew member seen walking in the background when the car is approaching the bridge, being removed?

Years ago I bought the bluray version of this movie. Man,was I disappointed. Looked like a one to one transfer from VHS to bluray. Watched it once and never again cause of the poor picture quality. However, I might give this 4K edition a second chance because I love this movie. Thanks for the review.

Worth it mostly for the HDR. No real resolution upgrade except in text from what I've seen. Now evil dead 2 was a much bigger upgrade

Upgraded both Evil Dead 1 and 2 during this sale. Have two packages due in tomorrow with over thirty titles coming in. Almost picked up the 4K of Possessor until they took it off the 3 for 2 promotion. Oh well, I am sure to find it on another sale someday.

I picked up the two pack steelbook when it dropped and would recommend this disc along with Evil Dead 2. I agree with Jeff's review that it still looks like an "old" movie but that's all part of the charm. Make up and color grading was great. This is the way to experience this movie in my opinion. Now if only they'll release Army of Darkness and the reboot in 4k. Army is being worked on if I remember correctly?

Basically if you have one of the 75 versions of this film that have already been released it’s really not a must to upgrade. Since the movie was filmed in 16mm on a nonexistent budget, there’s not much that a 4K transfer is going to do to improve it.

I saw a print of Evil Dead in the theater back in the day, and the closest color wise it has ever looked was the elite dvd/ laserdisc. I have quite a few copies of this film including the blu (not the 4k yet), and Elite just got it right and I’d love to see a higher def version of that scan. A warmer look is by my experience correct, in the mid 2000’s the movie was remastered with a cooler, darker and more blue look.

I did the two 4K moviessteelbook on bestbuy when it came out. I'm surprised I never owned the blu-ray of these movies.... at least i don't remember getting them. I did get the remake on blu-ray but I still haven't watched it. BUT i guess it didn't matter the case, the discs are going into the book of the dead dvd editions..... probably the only time the dvd case is the way to go?

It should, 4K UHD Blu Ray discs aren’t region locked, unlike regular Blu Ray and DVD

No it's still very much edited to remove/hide the "imperfections". Shame really, because I love the original cut as it feels like an actual self-funded indie film.

I personally love this transfer and think everyone should have it. The gold standard of these types of edited directors editions. It’s is essentially a special edition ala Star Wars with slight edits like the Jaws 4K but where jaws had the grain removed the evil dead maintains it fully as a film should have. Some may say it is distracting which I say you are valid to claim but I disagree. The grain structure has those extra fine details that in jaws was maintained due to the money universal put into it but look at The lord of the rings and equally as important series that had the grain taken to the point that the extra fine detail was removed. All that said I hate that they did not include the original version with the stereo audio and the plethora of special features the dvd had. The only 2 gripes I have with the release. Having seen this film theatrically from the film restoration the 4K disc is accurate to the colors from that presentation.

No. All the HD releases of The Evil Dead have been re-edited with CGI to remove that stuff.

PSA: Do NOT buy The Evil Dead on Blu ray or 4K!!!! It's not the original movie! The re-edited it, ala George Lucas, with CGI and it is not true to the original version of the movie. As of 2022, the only way to watch the real version of this movie is on DVD unfortunately.

I received a copy of this 4K last Christmas, and just got rid of it. I was thrown off by the format that it was presented in. It just seems weird to be watching a 4K transfer in 16mm and full screen. I just picked up "Evil Dead 2" on 4K which is in my opinion, superior to its predecessor. Still debating picking this one up again though.

It’s the aspect ratio that it was filmed in, so think of it as preserving that aspect ratio. About 7 out of 10 times when watching movies on Blu-ray or 4K, you’re getting black bars on top and bottom, so just think of it in similar terms, except on the left and right.

You do realize your 4K film is only as good as the source you are playing it through ? the 4K version of the Evil Dead is worth every cent .. couple that with an OLED tv.. mind blown. Blu ray evil dead looks like SD DVD in comparison to 4K !! . Resolution and HDR are incredible for a film of this age and budget. Stick to reviewing films mate not audio/visual .. you are way off
