I agree. Just watched it today and the main notice was how much darker and clearer it looked compared to the Blu ray which looked very bright and grainy like you said. Definitely noticeable but looks better imo

I've only ever watched the DVD release of this and I've held onto it for probably a decade at this point. I never upgraded to Blu Ray because I've just never seen it at any retailer. It's become one of my favorite movies, and even the DVD release is still an excellent way of watching it. For me, $20 is a steal and I cannot wait to pick it up.

What’s with the grain issues these days? Intentionally or not - it’s film. It’s movies... i love both film and digital depending on the movie genre. Modern films can look too clean (looking at you Gemini Man...) and SFX are destroyed. Maybe I’m in the minority...

Paramount pictures and Sony is winning when it comes to 4k UHD from my point of view all the other studios are not putting an effort when it comes to 4k and the only good 4k movie Marvel got is Avengers Infinity war

Saliym Abdul Fox was doing good for a while with their first 3 catalog titles, Alien, Die Hard and Predator, then Disney stopped down on doing catalog titles. It’ll be interesting to see if they make use of all the HDR assets sitting in the Fox vault.

The bass is a let down on this one. Please do a comparison with previous blu ray. The Dts hd master is boombastic when the aliens appear for the first time. On the Atmos track that bass is lower. Overall in the actions scenes though the height effects are there but bass is lacking when compared to the DTS Hd Master.

I totally agree! I remember the bass from the regular blu-ray blowing out 2 of my subwoofers, the 4K version didn’t.

The ATMOS soundtrack is very inferior In the LFE department, compared to The DTS-HD 5.1. The audio is sadly heavy filtered at the 28-30hz. There is literally no ULF present any longer. The movie is famous because of it’s infrasonic and ultra low bass, now it is removed completly and what a shame

Hi-Fi Haven Minority Report was mostly a Fox film. Disney doesn’t seem to be releasing Fox catalog titles in 4K anymore. Predator is the last one fox released before Disney took over.

1953 and 2005 films were very different, but both felt like they could’ve been something great but fell short in key places. Both end up just being OK in my opinion. I know a lot of people love the ‘53 version but idk

You know what I'd like to revisit on 4k is those classics like Lawrence of Arabia and Papillon as long as they were remastered . If I have to pay extra for shitty transfer I might as well keep the dvds. Why don't you do a list of period classics on 4k , already released and upcoming ?

AVS Forum mentioned that the bass was lessened compared to the DTS mix on the Blu-ray, especially during the pod emergence, a well known demo scene...it seems you didn’t notice too much of a difference?

I didn’t think so. I think it was probably more we’ll balanced. The pod emergence scene was so overwhelming on the bass. Now with the extra channels it’s more spread across all channels. Great bass, but maybe less on the actual sub and more bass through the surrounds.

Yeah, Ralph Potts and others confirm that the LFE on the Atmos track is lacking the punch and depth of the DTS-HD on the Blu-ray. I've cancelled my 4K pre-order. It's also why I refuse to buy Oblivion. When the PQ and/or the AQ is better on the Blu-ray than the 4K, somebody needs to be fired.

Probably preference. The Blu-ray has an extra kick that’s noticeably lacking in the Atmos track if you’re used to the original DTS MA! I noticed it immediately, but the Atmos track is more spacious with the overheads, but in the words of Yoda... gone is the shaking room rumble, LFE subtler, it is!

That being said it is the "oomph" effect that prevents it to be a reference track. I have personally measured it and the low end frequencies are lacking. It would have been exactly reference in terms of tracks like Godzilla King of Monsters!!!

Sometimes I can't tell much difference between a blu-ray and 4K upgrade but this one is major. Lots of blu-rays i've watched have looked very very good but the blu-ray of this looks awful. The 4K version looks so much better. While playing your review apparently my issues with the picture are the film grain. I must be a film grain hater because it makes the resolution look much worse even if that is what the director wanted.. The 4K looks much much better to me.

I just played War of Worlds the bluray(DTS.HD-MA) and i have a question to anyone that might know. During the thunder sequence the bass is NOT earth shattering and i have way too much activity from my surrounds. I have a Klipsch R12sw that does not go ultra low, i think down to 25HZ. Am i missing out any major bass because it does not go ultra low, and does it have anything to do with the too much activity on the surrounds?

It's the same disc from what I've read. No change. The Blu-ray DTS-HD has better LFE bass and depth, so since I already have the Blu-ray I've now cancelled my pre-order for the neutered 4K.

Neutered indeed. The standard blu-ray soundtrack is superior to the 4K version. I think I'll stick with the standard blu-ray on this one.

The sound staging is the best and the wrost elements of this movie - the fantastic bass when the Aliens appear and the terrible wind of the two kids which ruins the movie for many. Good review but I think not worth the upgrade 😎😞😎

I have to say I was disappointed with the low end on the Atmos track. I have watched the Bluray version many times and there is more low end on that track then the Atmos IMO. I bought this day one and just came to see the review, still a worthwhile upgrade for the picture.
