One technique I've tried a few times, and ALOT of it comes from Stanley Kubricks' style of directing is really giving the actor "free reign" and doing a lot of takes so the actor isn't "acting" the role...they're "being" the role which I think helps them internalize who that character is. Then they know when I ask for "more anger" or "more vulnerable" or just "more interesting" they have that internalization to draw from.

I think that’s a great approach if you have enough money to be able to shoot that way. Most independent filmmakers have to shoot five or more pages a day, and that severely hampers the directors ability to give the actors the free reign you suggested.

It'll be nice to address some unconventional things also, like directors such as Robert Bresson who worked with non actors and had a rather dry and unique movie language. Essentially, a way of acting should emerge from movie language that you choose. That's the starting point of working with actor imo.

All very good, but the video is really about directing BAD or POOR actors. Good actors will have already discovered a LOT of what you recommend telling them. They should already know where they've been before the scene, their motivations, the subtext and so on. Only beginners or poor actors will not have thought these things out beforehand.

Yes and no. Yes that good actors have already figured out those things. No because there is no objective truth for those things, and different actors will have different interpretations from each other and from the director. So direction with good actors still needs to happen to get everyone on the same page, performing in the "same scene" and in the "same movie". Where the actor thinks their character was before the scene, and what the director thinks, may turn out to be VERY different.

Can you do an episode about How to Talk to Investors?
@FilmSkills
@FilmSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Yes - I produced an entire series that includes: • How to build a business plan • How to raise money from investors • How to manage money on set • How to develop the shooting schedule • Preparing an air-tight budget • Working with vendors • How to hire the crew • Working with SAG-AFTRA • How to start a production company Each of these lessons include a 20-30 minute video, downloadable forms, and illustrated companion guides, and it's all included in FilmSkills Unlimited.
